We're dealing with fuzzy terms now, but a Best Picture film is unlikely to be not well written, not well directed, not well acted, etc, so at worst it's likely a film worth seeing unless it's in a genre you detest or you have learned it contains triggers or something like that. It's virtually certain to be "good", in fact usually quite good.

 

Winning an Oscar in some category, sure, the other parts of the movie could conceivably be unwatchable.

 

I harken back to when The Sting won Best Picture. I thought it was not that great, and was very surprised, although I don't remember now what would have been a better choice. But, it was good.

Omg ... The Sting was AWESOME! I saw it several times when it first came out. Redford and Neuman ... it simply does not get better than that.

I have moviepass. I think it’s pretty sweet, as a product, but the company is just a freaking clown party. They offer almost no customer service whatsoever. They literally do not have a phone number.

 

That said, if you go enough, you’re pretty much going to the movies for free.

Watched The Disaster Artist the other night. If you’ve watched The Room, it’s a must-see film. So much fun to watch and Franco is an amazing Wiseau.

I haven't seen much of Franco and what I've seen has seemed self-indulgent, but this was the role he was born to play.

 

It was the movie I went to see the last time Mrs Ash went out of town, because I knew she would detest it. She'll be away on business again soon - I need to scan the Coming Attractions list.

Okay ... I know this says 'anything but Star Wars' ... but I just saw the first one, episode 4 ... with live orchestra. omg ... that. was. AMAZING! If you like movie soundtracks like I do, but especially one as iconic as this one by John Williams ... it was amazing to watch the movie with the soundtrack played by a live orchestra. If you have the opportunity to see it like that, do it! I know the Minnesota Orchestra does this ... so check it out. But nothing like the CSO Brass playing this one ... nothing like it. :)

Not a current movie, but I can’t remember if I’ve recommended this one to TD folks before...

 

I LOVE sports movies, and I can only assume many of you do as well. I have one single favorite of all time. Just so happens, it’s World Cup time at the moment, so it’s a topical one as well, and I’m going to rewatch it this evening.

 

The Damned United. Best sports movie (non documentary) ever. Find it, watch it, enjoy.

I know someone who saw one of the Harry Potter movies like this and said it was pretty incredible.

 

I did see the Avengers a couple of weeks ago.  I did like it better than the last one.  Without going into too much detail, they executed some of their game plans as well as the Twins.

 

I had been meaning to see The Quiet Place, but it just left my theater.  I will have to wait until it is on DVD or try to hit it at the cheap theaters.

I didn't have high expectations of A Quite Place so take my next words however you like...

 

I saw it at a drive-in and it was not scary/thrilling at all. Since my expectations were low, I'm not sure that was the problem but maybe it was. I think watching it on DVD will have the same effect. It might be better to try to see it in a cheap theater because I think that might make the movie better (big dark room, big screen). I thought it was overrated.

A Quiet Place is a fantastic film that needs to be experienced, not only watched.

 

I told everyone I know to skip the theatre and watch it in a dark, quiet room.

 

I lucked out and caught a matinee with about ten people in the theatre. It was outstanding.

 

Definitely not overrated, simply a film that doesn’t really shine with a bunch of other people around you.

 

(but it’s not a “scary” movie in the sense that it horrifies you, it’s a suspense film that relies on the lack of sound to build fear)

As soon as I'm challenged to suspend disbelief, my mind goes "challenge accepted" and I can't help but look for all the reasons why I shouldn't suspend disbelief.   What's wrong with me? Do others have this problem?

I do. But there are times when I just roll with it because I'm having a fun and/or an experience. A Quiet Place was one of those times.

 

But generally, I'm super critical of gaping plot holes. But in that film, I just didn't care.

I think some films are better a signalling "come with us for the ride, and shut off your cynicism"

I felt zero suspense which is what the problem was. It wasn't suspenseful at all to me. It may have been the drive-in effect, I'm not really sure.

 

I know a few people who said they jumped several times when they watched it. Didn't happen to me at all especially in that movie when you always know it's coming. That's why, for me, it was completely overrated. I felt zero.

It was the environment. 

 

Also, A Quiet Place is not a "jumping' movie. That's the point of it. I don't think I jumped once the entire film. That didn't mean it failed, it wasn't trying to do that at all past one or two points during the story.

It probably was the environment, but it's too late to change that. The movie was already predictable so seeing it again and having an even worse opinion of it won't change that for me.

 

A know a heck of a lot of people who thought of it as a jumping movie because of the supposed suspense. I'm a very, I guess you could call it, desensitized person, so it takes a lot for anything to affect me. Just was not suspenseful and completely predictable. I like movies where I can't call out what's going to happen next for every single scene. I was hoping everyone would die about 30 minutes into the movie.

 

Get Out felt more suspenseful to me and was a good movie too.
