Article: Winter Meetings - Search For A Starter

Yikes.  Not me.  To me you don't trade the number 1 overall pick, when that pick is a position player, and especially when that pick is going to be a middle-of-the-field defender, to obtain any pitcher.  At least not until that number 1 pick has had a chance to show you some cracks that will limit that ceiling.  That day may come for Lewis (I sincerely hope it doesn't)...but I don't think we're there at this point.  Too soon.

Now when I say "any" pitcher.....well, let's just say Archer would not be an exception to the rule.

I would make Gonsalves, Lewis, Romero, and Rooker untouchable.

I have no idea the cost of it but if the Marlins are just giving away players it would be interesting for the Twins to make Kepler/Rosario available in a trade for a pitcher then use prospects to acquire Ozuna or Yelich. Not saying I would do it but in the right scenario if we had to give up one of those guys to acquire a top pitcher we could easily turn around and look into what they would cost us.

Great - a lousy defender, a utility infielder and two AA players. If Granite is "dime a dozen", I'm sure Pittsburgh wouldn't mind having a different dime a dozen player thrown in. I'd prefer to have a capable defensive OF at AAA in case Buxton is out for more than a week.

What type of player do you think fill-in corner outfielders or 4th outfielders are?

The way I look at it, the Twins "nothing but rain drops" outfield is all center fielder quality. Varying degrees obviously, but that's what they are. It's nice to have a 4th OF-er who is also CF above average, but they already have that and corners are way easier to fill.

Granite is a 4th outfielder for the Twins. Look at who the Twins have had in that role recently: Sam Fuld, Logan Schafer, Jordan Schafer, Danny Santana, Shane Robinson, Darin Mastroianni, Clete Thomas... Bench outfielders and corner guys are definitely a dime-a-dozen.

You're worrying too much about this and if he's a guy Pittsburgh is targeting, I say good for them and him.

I would guess that kills many of the trade opportunities. Why Rooker? Or even Lewis?

Yeah.  I would really not want to see Lewis go based on the ceiling as it stands so early.  But I think 'untouchable' is a strong word, one I think management has to avoid as much as possible.  Basically, the term/concept of 'untouchable' only has meaning to me within the context of a specific offer.  For instance, I am willing to go only THIS FAR for player A; meanwhile, I'll go THIS FAR for player B.

Not only that, it has probably never happened in the history of baseball.

2009 Yankees signed what I considered the top 3 free agents overall.    Sabbathia, Burnett and Texeira which added to a team that won 89 games the prior year.    That team won the WS but if I were a Yankee fan I would have lost a lot of interest at that point.     "Super teams" just don't do much for me.   If I want to watch sure wins I'll watch the Globetrotters.    I'm ok with adding a piece that fits but have been following Gonsalves, Romero and May for several years.   Those are the guys I want to see play for the Twins.

For the record, Gordon would strikeout about as much as Sano at this point if pushed to the majors. He needs another full year at AA. And you all know that I am not one to say something like that about prospects.

No, he's in triple-A next year.

I know he had a bad 2nd half. But we seem to forget how good his first half was when everyone was on board saying "yeah he's definitely our #1 prospect" mid-summer.

Interesting Read:  http://www.twincities.com/2017/12/12/relationship-with-twins-gm-thad-levine-could-be-game-changer-for-yu-darvish/

Says in here that Darvish reached out to Gimenez over Thanksgiving to discuss Twins and the city.

Hmmm, so I guess their friends. And one of them got non-tendered? Oops.

Guess this team should be shopping Garver and resigning Giminez.

Interestingly enough-- Banuelos seems to be not too far down the depth chart-- which may make Garver expendable for the next year or so-- while Gimenez keeps the spot warm for Banuelos.

Twins are said to be looking at Back Up Catcher options, and Gimenez alledgedly wants to return. I wonder if they have him on Speed Dial and have told Darvish that they'll bring in Gimenez to help ease the transition if he signs.

All speculation of course, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see Garver moved and Gimenez signed quickly after a Twins-Darvish signing.

when you factor in the picks of free agent guys (outside of Darvish), I think I prefer the trade market.

If you compare signing one of the guys for 4-80 or 5-100, you pay the money and lose a pick.

With a guy like Cole, you lose prospects, pay less money, and potentially gain a pick if he does not re-sign here. The swing between losing a pick and gaining one seems like a pretty big deal.

Just remember the pick we got for Cuddy turned out to be Berrios.

The team control on the Archer contract is very appealing to this Twins fan.  To get a starting pitcher of his stature for just over $8 million/avg per year over 4 years is a bargain in todays baseball payroll world. Obviously you are going to have to give up some good minor league talent in return that's the price of poker.

YAWN

I believe we need a daily reminder that the winter meetings have started because the amount of interesting things that have happened are not setting the hot stove league thermostat very high.

Maybe they can retrade Stanton again or introduce him with a different jersey or may Ohtani can talk about hitting and pitching again and again....

I think we say no. Sano and Gonsalves both still have ceiling, while Longoria is probably past prime and Archer has probably peaked as well

Exactly this.  And not to mention, though Longoria doesn't have a MONSTER contract, that has to be included when talking about value (an average of 17M a year if you count the buyout for 2023)

So it's 32 year old Longoria (owed 17M a year over the next 5 years) + Archer (and his 8.5M a year over 4 years) for Sano (who isn't arbitration eligible yet) + Gonzalves who still has 6 years of control.

This may turn out to be nothing, but according to MLB Trade Rumors, Darvish has been in contact with Gimenez about what it's like to play in Minnesota.  Like I said, it could very well be nothing, but if it isn't .... ?!  A possible deal could be farther along than people realize.
