Twins offseason grade last year: D

They made some other moves that were probably as important - hiring Pickler and Rowsan. Keeping Steil. Not signing vets to block Rosario or Buxton. I think I was mostly ok with what they did since they needed to learn what they had and not sell Dozier for 60 cents on the dollar.

It's what we all knew ... if Buxton blossomed, the Twins were in for a huge change of fortune.

I can't expect SI or Fox to have had an understanding of that....

Since the Fox article closed with "Any step forward the franchise takes this year will be thanks to healthy, productive seasons from outfielders Byron Buxton and Max Kepler, infielder Jorge Polanco, third baseman Miguel Sano and pitcher Jose Berrios.", it seems like they had an understanding of one sort or another.

How does Buxton blossoming or not impact signing a pitcher, or better relievers, or a DH?

It doesn't but I doubt the OP meant that Buxton was responsible for all the improvement.  They were a 103 loss team looking to develop their core.  Buxton and Polanco were as bad as they we last year for part of the season and then looked like different (much better) players)  Rosario improved substantially after the first month.  Hildy and Busenitz provided substantial production the last 1/23 of the season.  Mejia was looking pretty good before the injury.  This is what you do when you lose 103 games but have a core with a bright future.  You don't make moves as if you are assembling the final pieces of a team contending for a world series appearance.

Do you really need a DH when you are trying to get ABs for your developing core, especially when one of them has potential (Vargas)

What FA SP would you have added. The FA Class of SPs was so poor only two were able to contracts longer than 2 years.  One being a 37 year old Rich Hill. Is that the player you add to a 103 loss team you are looking to rebuild.  The other was Ivan Nova.  Would anyone had thought he was a significant part of a rebuild?

Offseason grades are worth less than minor league ratings. In the last few years, critics thought the White Sox and the Padres “won” the offseason. May have been worth less than nothing. Besides, the ratings are usually exclusively focused on roster changes and teams are learning that a lot more goes into building a good organization than making exciting trades and free agent signings.

The Twins last offseason wasn't very good if we're going solely by players acquired.

They did more in the front office and coaching staff than the on-field product, which was also the right thing to do.

But still, one flippin' reliever would have been nice.

Overall, I was mostly satisfied with a quiet offseason as the new front office began restructuring. They shouldn't repeat that lack of action this offseason, though.

I was in agreement with the new front office approach to resist the temptation of coming in guns blazing and making wholesale changes without first seeing what the young guys could do. Unfortunately Terry Ryan had many of our young guys on a shuttle service from AAA to the Twins and it was difficult to gauge what level of talent we had. I just wish that the crystal ball that Falvey once had wouldnt have broke so he could have forsaw all of the injuries that our young pitchers encountered. Then maybe he would have been more proactive in finding additional arms. I believe that he wanted to see what he had with the young pitchers and that is why he didnt actively pursue free agent arms. Our young hitters blossomed because they were in the lineup everyday and didnt have some old veteran blocking their path. I wonder our young pitchers could have had the same outcome if not for all the injuries. Guess we'll never know but lets hope that atleast May and Jay stay healthy this year.

I agree, outside of an upgrade in the reliever(s) brought in I was satisfied with mast offseason and would be quite upset if it was repeated.

Yeah, I was of the opinion the new FO wanted to see what they had before making any moves.

Sometimes doing nothing is better than running in circles screaming and shouting.

I'm talking about the D grade, obviously. If the criteria is "The current players can get them into the playoffs" -- is that a D to you? Clearly they did not understand the team, though none of us expected a playoff berth we knew a big swing would come if Buxton started to perform as expected.
