Twins Void $3 Million Deal With Jelfrey Marte

Another angle: Braves may lose Maitan, the #1 int'l SS prospect during the same signing period as Marte, for breaking int'l signing rules. I'm not sure how it will work, but if Maitan immediately becomes available to the highest bidder, and the Twins lose out on Ohtani, do we try to scoop up Maitan?

From MLB.com: "The Venezuelan teenager has been compared to Miguel Sano and his ceiling has been put side-by-side with the likes of Miguel Cabrera and Chipper Jones. He has pop from both sides, with perhaps a touch more from the right side, and has shown an advanced approach at the plate, especially for his age. While he's not a runner, he is agile and athletic in the field. That, along with a tremendous arm and excellent instincts, make some think he can stay at short long-term. Others think he'll eventually have to move to third, though he can be a plus defender there."

Thoughts?

Might be even more than Maitan. O would go hard to spend on (potwntially) available guys over waiting for the really small chance of Otani.

Would Maitan and any other prospect the Braves lose become unrestricted free agents, or int'l free agents with money caps?

Sounds like Maitan and the others would be under the international cap due to their age. Give's the Twins an advantage, if he's planning on playing this year and not waiting until the July 2 deadline again.

If they are allowed to keep their signing bonuses after being released, I can't see any of the players involved would want to wait until July 2nd to sign. It will only interrupt their development, which could risk money offered.

I agree with drjim, go hard after Maitan if he becomes available, along with any other prospects the Braves lose.

Correction: Wander Franco was the #1 SS, and top overall int'l prospect, in the same signing period as Marte.

Regardless, if Maitan becomes available, I'm on-board with going after him.

Falvey and Levine, come on, you have to admit, these guys are playing to win.

Finally.

Give us Otani, or get another team to trade us prospects in exchange for our protected funds.

Love that strategy.

And it's working.

They haven't done anything yet.  A bit early to say they are playing to win after they traded off a SP and a closer and waived the flag at the deadline. Right now all they've done is saved the Pohlad family 3m dollars. We'll see how/if they use it.
