Yup.  Broken.

This is a ****ty situation that friends of mine have been abuzz about, and I don't blame them.   The fault is with the university for not having protocol when bringing provocative speakers onto campus, which obviously the BP would be, after just weeks earlier a BP officer was found not guilty of murdering a Mexican citizen when he was throwing rocks over a fence, and two people were found guilty of misdemeanors for providing water to border crossers.

The person "protesting" was dumb af, but that really isn't the point.  The university should own up to its own failings.

A great example of why many hard core liberals believe there is no point in voting.... They're all the same, Democrats and Republicans.

Not my view, but this kind of thing reinforces that view of you have it.

I always vote, but in my view, it shows why we should be cynical of Democrats passing themselves off as moderates, there certainly could be a corporate-friendly agenda behind the supposed moderation (as has been the case with Democrats, oh for thirty years if not more).

Shame. I filed my taxes for free using free file fillable forms. Recommend it to any that have the patience to go through their taxes line by line. Mine aren't that complex, but I wouldn't qualify for the free filling at turbo tax.

This is better than the BS I would hear in Texas. "They're all the same ... so vote Republican."

Lot of world news... Israel electing a criminal, al-Bashir overthrown, Assange pulled out of the embassy. The news will be interesting for the next month.

Regarding Assange, I knew he was an arrogant jerk, but I didn't realize he was this stupid.

If I didn't read it myself from the AP, I'd think it was an Onion article:

QUITO, Ecuador — The dramatic end to Julian Assange's asylum has sparked curiosity about his seven-year stay inside Ecuador's Embassy in London that was marked by his late-night skateboarding, the physical harassment of his caretakers and even the smearing of his own fecal matter on the walls of the diplomatic mission.

It would've tested the patience of any host. But for tiny Ecuador, which prides itself on its hospitality and spent almost $1 million a year protecting Assange, it was also seen as a national insult.

"We've ended the asylum of this spoiled brat," a visibly flustered President Lenin Moreno said Thursday in a fiery speech explaining his decision to withdraw protection of Assange and hand him over to British police. "From now on we'll be more careful in giving asylum to people who are really worth it, and not miserable hackers whose only goal is to destabilize governments."

I wonder if Assange will try to use any information he has about Podesta/DNC emails as leverage in his charges related to Chesea Manning, but now that the special counsel is shut down, I'm sure that's wishful thinking.

I doubt he has loyalty to anyone besides himself. I also wonder if the special council being shut down had an impact on his protection being revoked...

I don't like Trump's tactics here, but once again he exposes how insane liberal rhetoric on sanctuary cities and border control can get.  The rhetoric seems to be more about demonstrating altruism through rhetoric without offering solutions or acknowledging he issues that arise from such an open policy.  Illegals are being detained right now.  WHAT is the solution here?  Just let them go ANYWHERE??

The response from democrats to Trump's idea to send detained illegals to sanctuary cities really is telling.  The response from democrats on this is more about Trump's tactics than it is what they truly believe or the logistical issues.  Moreover, democrats are programmed to NEVER agree with anything Trump might present.

For example, Corey Booker accidentally admitted mass illegal immigration and relocation of them in sanctuary cities makes us less safe.  OK, how does this bit from Booker jibe with the rhetoric that's come from his party?  I wish he'd tell that to Beto O'Rourke. The idea that this is a human rights issue or a race is too simplistic and ignores too many other factors.

Here is Booker.

So what do we do candidate Booker?  Do we keep them detained?

You  really show where you truly stand on this one.  Let them in, don't build a wall, but don't come into my district.  Real cute stuff.  And he isn't the only one

This entire discussion on illegals is insane to me.  Why are THESE people allowed to circumvent the process?  My ancestors from Italy were not.  Not only that quotas were instituted against Italy and many other countries after it was deemed too many had come over at once.  Nobody screamed and yelled about, nor should they have, in my opinion.

nobody screamed and yelled about quotas back in teh day? Want to place a wager on that?

your larger point, that the Dems don't have any kind of answer, is true. But, we are 16 or more months from the next election, they have time to develop one (though like you, I'd like to see one now).

I hate the term illegals. It is a false narrative about what is actually happening. The illegals you're referring to, are likely asylum seekers.

My solution would be to process these people more efficiently at the border. Create a tiered classification system, where not everyone is granted asylum, but a lot of people are. I'm not sure how to set this up, or how many people to let in.

Why are you so scared of immigrants? Almost all of us descend from immigrants or colonizers. They aren't here to control territory and claim it under a new country fwiw....

Show me where the protests against quotas restricting Italians, Jews and Asians went beyond Italians, Jews and Asians themselves decrying bigotry.

To the larger point, they do need to come up with an answer, and they need to now.  Trump at least has a policy on the issue and the democrats are blocking it.  All the democrats have is anti-Trump rhetoric and no real way of addressing the issue.

OK, in that case let's refer to them as Flower Children.

This is, quite frankly, the kind of language that interferes with the substantive issue. What does it matter if they are called illegals?  They are crossing the border illegally so the term applies.  You want to call them something nicer.  OK....now what??

And the "why are you so afraid of immigrants" response completely ignores the fact that we are talking about mass immigration of people illegally crossing the border.  In what way is that immigration?  It isn't the immigration that is acceptable under the law.  Heck....if immigrants come into the country, are processed legally and aren't part of some mass exodus then we have no real problem.  To say, "why are you so afraid of immigrants" along with your proposed solution of "processing them more efficiently" only goes to show you do not understand the gravity of the issue we currently face at the border.  The people in question are not coming to the border to be processed.  They are coming to the border to cross it without being processed.

You completely talk around that and it is the entire issue.

like the GOP on healthcare, or most anything the previous POTUS wanted/did. True. It's a sad state of affairs right now.

Now the protests have to go beyond the immigrants? Also, maybe, I don't know, we are more informed and better educated than 100 years ago......

I highly doubt that people were more informed 100 years ago.  Please give me your theory and the data on that one.

Ummmm.  Yes it is.

Relevant to the post I was replying to WHY is it so important to refer to people entering the country illegally (with no intention of being processed because they probably never would be) a problem?  Is it too racist?

Please.  If somehow people from Germany were doing the same thing is large numbers it would demand the same attention.  If you don't think so then please tell me why that is.

TFW you use a pejorative term, "illegals," which is also factually incorrect because seeking asylum is legal, then cry foul about interfering with substantive issues.

I actually agree with many bits and pieces of what Ewen brings to this thread. Things that are taboo, like the idea that there is a segment of African American street culture that glorifies violence and sexism, and retaliation, and being a "snitch" if you speak out against crime.

But too often for me, he surrounds it with rhetoric and ideas that I find too appalling to even wade into a debate with.
