How should the Twins celebrate clinching the WC?

  1. 1. How should the Twins celebrate clinching the WC?

    • Reserved celebration. Hugs, pats on the back, etc. Haven’t won anything yet. Eyes on the prize.
    • Crack open the champagne, get out the goggles. Full-on celly. Go nut.

Yeah, kind of funny this could happen in Cleveland.

Imagine the Indians:  having won 23 straight and one of the best runs in MLB history, having really clinched, and now come the Twinkie Kids, all kerfuffly because they get to play an extra game in New York, messing around on their baseball field.

I wouldn't go overboard on celebrating.

This team lost 103 games last season, and very few gave them a shot to be good this year - let alone make the playoffs. When they clinch it - go nuts. They've earned a celebration.

I don't subscribe to the philosophy that celebrating a success means their focus will fade.

If they win tonight, they should have a celebration. What if they lose, and the Angels lose? Seems a bit more anti-climactic.

And the Angels' game starts an hour later. So if the Twins should lose tonight, sitting around in your stinky uniform for an hour or two just in case you might be able to celebrate, seems a little anticlimactic. If you win, celebrate. If you lose, shower, change clothes, go back to your hotel, and see if you are officially in the playoffs.

  • Reach the playoffs = Big-time celebration after a 162-game season. You've helped eliminate 20 teams.
  • Win the WC game = Regular-season win celebration, ratcheted up a bit. It was just one game. Maybe at the level of a regular-season walk-off win.
  • Win the ALDS = Hug-fest on the mound.
  • Win the ALCS = Pig pile on the mound, being careful not let to Bartolo jump on last.
  • Win the WS = Bigger-time celebration, complete with parade.

This one.

Win tonite or lose and still clinch the wildcard -- go nuts like you just won the division.  It's a giant accomplishment anytime but especially for a team that is so young and had the sting of 103 losses the previous season following it.  I'll never blame a team for a full-on celebration for clinching a playoff spot.  It's AFTER that spot is clinched that I take issue with.  Win the WC game or the ALDS and we're popping tops?  I don't see NBA or NHL teams going to the goggles for winning a first or second round series.  If you win the pennant, I get it...that's a league championship there, no issues at all.  But a WC and ALDS win doesn't need to be raising the stock of Moet.

After watching videos of this year's Twins celebrate...I have changed my mind and I want to say I was wrong in my earlier statement to act like you've been there before. It was fun watching these Twins celebrate in the clubhouse and to listen to their comments about how much they care for each other. This really is a special team and a special time in the lives of the Twins' players, organization and fans. Remember this feeling and prepare to play hard Tuesday so we can have this feeling again Tuesday night.

Just popped into this thread to write the exact same post.  Someone beat me to the punch!

Yeah, it was worth watching the video just to see Joe with a big grin doing the most awkward man-hug I've seen in a while.  Go Boys!

Check out the third link in this article, the five-minute season to date retrospective.  Chills, baby, chills.

They deserved the celebration.  In February they were given a 2% chance of making the Playoffs and their world series odds were 125/1.  Even as as they got into August their Playoff odds were only 17/3.   The fact they kept grinding and winning the games they were supposed to win is on them.  They earned it.  103 losses to the playoffs.  Congrats!

Aside from the WS years my favorite years were 2006, 2008, and 2009.   Every one of these years ended with first round losses.    Its the journey I enjoy, not the destination.   This season has been right up there for enjoyment.    If you don't celebrate now and then lose in New York then you won't have celebrated at all and that just seems wrong for a fun season.

Indiana Twin is going to bring us all donuts from the Amish bakery when we clinch the playoff spot. :)

Plan B. My wife is a saint. She got up early and made the legendary crumb cake from her (almost Amish) Great Grandma's recipe. Let's just say that it kicks Dunkin' Donuts' butt and rivals Rise'N Roll in its delectibleness.

Send me your number, and I'll fax you a piece.

Sorry, folks. I tried, but it messed up the document feeder. Now the custodians are mad because of the crumbs on the floor, and Office Services has revoked by access code for both the fax AND the copy machine.

If you don't celebrate the wins/moments in life, what is the whole point?

If this was game 163 and they had a playoff game the next day I would say maybe tone it down, but 6 days before your next game that matters? Party hard boys!
