Haters of bunts unite!

Doubles

Recommended Posts

Can we all please rise up against all this bunting business?

It's time to take a stand.  Social media has proven itself to be a useful vehicle for several great and important causes.  Can we start some sort of twitter movement that unifies our cause?

Some people have paper clips in their Twitter handles, some have ribbons representing various causes.  How can we put our disdain for willingly reducing our chances to win baseball games on full display?  Let this thread serve as a depository for your suggestions to get this erstwhile movement off the ground.

This aggression will not stand, man.

yeah, I was wondering how much conversation there would be here after watching Granite's bunt in the 8th yesterday. Probably would have been fine with it had it not been so obvious that the 3B was playing at pitcher depth...  Granite laid down a good one, but it would have been a much better use had he dropped one when it wasn't expected... not when it was obvious b/c he showed bunt prior.

1000 words why even a successful bunt is a bad idea, because it decreases your win probability:

So, when Molitor who does not get it, gets replaced in a couple months, there should be no cries.  Decisions like this mathematically decrease the team's probability of winning.  No excuses.   Data.

I love guys who can bunt well and get base hits. Guys like Buxton, or in the past Cares and Butler. It can be a useful weapon and keep defenses and pitchers off balance. And the Twins have some guys with good wheels to do so.

And I can still scenarios where bunting someone over to scoring position...and also avoid double play possibilities...can be useful.

But I do agree Molitor has used it far too much.

2 on nobody out, bottom of the order hitter at plate.

I prefer a sac bunt to the usual whiff, double play grounder, or weak popup.

Baseball is all about maximizing situations: move runner to 3rd with less than two outs, advancing runners, etc.

Should Sano, Rosario, or Mauer bunt a runner over? mmm, no. Polanco, Giminez, even Buxton, yes, cuz some of them might get a hit out of it.

I'm all about maximizing run scoring potential, and bunts can help.

I'd never have a hot bat bunt tho.

The problem is that the Twins don't really have an a-one bunter. I watched Carew bunt hit after hit. It's a great weapon when used correctly.

The antithesis of the bunt is the GIDP.

The Twins are the 3rd best team in the league with respect to GIDP and the best team in the AL.

Having said that, in spite of MLB's official stance, the balls seem juiced this year. Hitters may as well smack the ball. 2-3 years ago, bunting fit into the league environment. Now teams should be taking advantage of what the baseball gods are giving them.

In true "Doubles" style, I chose the absolute worst day- the worst of the worst- to make the original post in this thread yesterday.  CC Sabathia is probably the buntiest pitcher in the history of bunts.  Or pitching.

I was fine with bunting for hits last night against CC.  It's sac bunts in ill-advised situations that are truly the bane of my baseball existence.

Time to return to hating sac bunts with the fire of 1,000 suns.  We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming, until we see CC again.

I don't have a problem with bunting. I have a problem with the way the Twins are bunting.

I think it's OK for someone like Byron Buxton to bunt, given that he can get on base, and because he can make something happen once he does get on base. He should bunt at least once every other game to force infielders to play in all the time.

I think it's OK to bunt late in close games when your bottom-of-the-order hitters are up and there's a runner on first.

It is NOT OK to have your No. 3 hitter try bunting runners over. Ever.

Things I detest: Bunting

Thinks I like: your picture of THE CRUSHER!

I was more ok with bunting when the Twins were in the metrodome on the turf.  Granted, the ball scoots faster, but the bunting line is flatter and more predictable.  Too many times on grass, a good bunt is near the grass lip and tilts foul.
