Melville DFAd, John Curtiss to be promoted

next year we will have Curtiss, Burdi, Rogers, Duffey, Belisle, Hildenberger,  and Busenitz.   Possibly, Perkins, Chargois, May and Pressley.

Belisle and Perkins are Free Agents (Perkins has a team option that almost certainly will not be exercised).  Pressly is arbitration-eligible.  May is a starter.  So you are looking at 7 plus Pressly (plus Moya, Jay, Bard etc.)   Not a bad problem to have and also the potential to include some in trades towards starting pitching.

Curtiss will be fun to see.  His biggest issue has been control and when that is off, he is off.  That is something to definitely watch, because he tends to walk people (his BB/9 has been about 4 this season, and it his watch have come in bunches.)   He allowed only one less walk than allowed hits this season, so it is a problem, and will be interesting to see what will happen in the majors.

I hope that Melville stays with the team.  I liked what I saw from his fastball and curve (slider was awful and needs to go away) and wonder how that might play in the pen, esp. with that FB getting a couple ticks up towards 98 or so

What this means is that Gibson has kept his spot in the rotation (he is not considered worse than Melville) ...

I wonder if the bar was really that low.

Gibson pitched a great game and went deep (maybe could have gone 8?) and I loved the pace.

But I do think that the White Sox hitters really helped him out by consistently swinging outside the strike zone at his off speed stuff. If they lay off those and sit on his fastball (like everyone else), it could have been ugly. Toronto will be a greater challenge.

Good news in that Curtiss is getting a shot.  I just wonder why Jake Reed hasn't gotten a call yet either.  Guy has been absolutely dominant in Rochester as a RP.  Looks like we finally are starting to see some viable options for the major league bullpen.  what a breath of fresh air...

This "if" could be said about any successful pitcher.

Good pitchers get ahead, then force guys to deal with tough, borderline pitches (aka breaking pitches that start in the zone, but end up in the dirt). It's extremely rare to find hitters that can consistently lay off of those (the Mauer's if the world), especially when you are behind and in a protection mode.

Gibson's problem is/was that he wasn't getting ahead of hitters, then making mistakes in the zone. Not that his fastball is in some way worse than a successful pitcher. Quite the opposite. He's got some life in his fastball and can get outs with it.

If Gibson went 0-1 or 1-1 at a higher rate (throw more first/second pitch strikes) instead of always sitting 2-0, 2-1, he has the stuff to be a very good starting pitcher. We've seen flashes occasionally, and he's had success in the past.

Gibson is in another class than your typical back-end independent league guys that get banged around at the back-end of the Twins rotation because their stuff doesn't play. He doesn't get enough credit from most fans, in terms of his stuff, IMO. I still have hope that he's going to figure it out and turn his career around.

I agree that Melville won't be missed.

But I don't think Slegers is any kind of a lock to be back. I doubt one spot start did much to change their thoughts on him, and he was on pace to not be added to the 40 man. There are arms that could and will be added before him.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying, but Slegers is on the 40 man already - by virtue of being called up and then not DFA'ed (like they did with Melville).

There could be arms added to the 25-man before he gets called up again. But after Sept 1 the 25-man is no longer an constraint.

Your take is an interesting one, namely that his potential is so poor that they won't give him the time of day going forward. But I don't see an obstacle to their adding him for the final month, and I can't see why they wouldn't.

Wait and see - won't be long now.

We should also take note of his performance in AAA since his start up here. Not inspiring.

You'd think that, but then again, this is the organization that added Pat Dean in November a couple years ago. (That's the primary reason I am familiar with that rule, because everyone assumed Dean could be outrighted when we signed a FA.)

I'm guessing they don't have very ambitious FA plans, and they feel like there won't be much of a 40-man crunch when all is said and done either.

that and between Gibson, Santiago, Colon, and Belisle there's bound to be some pitching turnover on the 25/40 man.

It was only one start and I would expect something of a let down. I would look more at the performance before he was called up. Wouldn't suggest that sustained success in the bigs is a likely outcome.

He may come up in September as a backup long man, but he'll be a borderline 40 man guy in the offseason.
