Article: Official Twins Daily July Trade Deadline Day Thread

I think you're the only person who would take Rosario over Kepler.

Kepler's extreme struggles against lefties are confusing, but he's still got more upside than Rosario, and he is already a better player anyway.

I'm not sure I'd keep Rosario over Kepler, but I really like Rosario,

Eddie has been improving this year while Max is posting stats this year that are a modest increase from last year.

The chants to trade, or even DFA (yes, they've been posted here on TD), Rosario are difficult for me to understand. For some reason the improvements he makes don't seem to count.

He's like the Mitch Garver of the MLB Twins.

I dunno. This is sort of talk that makes me consider trading Kepler. What is your opinion based on? Rosario has a higher BA, OB, Slg. And is probably a better defender.

They rose at similar rates and similar time frames. They each were perennially ranked on team prospect lists, but the 5 seasons the 2 overlapped, Rosario was ranked higher every year. They both peaked at no. 3. Granted Kepler rated highest most recently.

I may be the only one who takes Rosario over Kepler. You are indicating a disparity in valuation vs production. Taking advantage of disparity in value is how you win trades. Eddie is considered by some to be a 4th outfielder. When do we begin to question whether Kepler is a platoon guy himself? Once his trade value diminishes?

Eddie once out-homered Sano for a season. Yet his upside is below Kepler? Where's the floor for a prospect who can't hit lefties?

In my opinion, upside is closer than people think. But the 2 are viewed like there's a huge chasm in talent. I'd like to take advantage of that if I can.

BTW, I'm only trading him for controlled pitching with ace potential.

Well for fun, here is Sickle's top 20 on them.

Would Cole be too much to ask for? If so that Tyler Watson might be a good get if paired with one other prospect. Watson seems to be a few years out though. With A.J. Cole you get a kid that should get an audition with the Twins this year and add him to the Top 8-10 SP options for next year.

Are you suggesting trading Kepler? Why? He's probably the second best all around hitter on the roster. Yes, he needs to improve vs LHP. But he's young enough to believe he can.

Because he should fetch a great return compared to other options. Kepler changed his swing and hitting profile to gain more power. There is a risk that the added HRs came at a significant price. You can't call a dead pull hitter who can't hit lefties an all around hitter. He's also not hitting for much average or power right now. Is he Jacque Jones or Justin Morneau?

Kepler is easily the better defender at this point, based on every stat I've looked at, in addition to just watching them. Plus, Kepler has about 1 less season of MLB experience, and they're putting up similar stats.

I'm not a hater on Rosario by any means, I'm just really high on Kepler.

Tyler Watson from the Nationals makes a lot of sense even though he's a little further away.  As someone else mentioned somewhere, the Twins are going to have to make some difficult 40 man decisions this off-season.  Plus part of building the pitching pipeline means adding guys for 2020.  Watson looks to be trending up.

How about Kintzler for LHP Tyler Watson (#17 mlb) and OF Rafael Bautista (#13 mlb; RH hitting MLB-ready 4th outfielder)?

I was just checking out their top 30 and Watson looks intriguing.

The Astros already have too many starters, probably moving Peacock back to the pen.

Geez, what a tough problem to have.

I'd like the Twins to be in that position soon. Of the Astros starters all but McCullers and Musgrove were of the "Hey, look at what I found here!" variety.

There's definitely a knack to finding diamonds in the rough, or at the very least seeing their flaws and turning them into diamonds. I have to think there's a way to quantify and identify.

I bet Santana gets moved but for a return most folks here are underwhelmed by. The front office surely sees his peripheral stats indicate he's much closer to being a liability than he is a front of the rotation guy. If he pitches to his stats the 2nd half, this is likely the last chance to deal him.

Starting to look like I'll have to walk back from this one. It's probably going to be hard to trade Santana if Gray and Darvish are going to go down to the wire. Damn A's, just make a deal already!

I wonder if it's possible that Santana can be moved in August.

I like both players, but I think Kepler has the easier corner spot at Target Field. 39-year-old Torii Hunter went from being the worst corner outfielder in the game with Detroit to above average at TF.

I would guess the Nationals offer A.J. Cole and the Twins decline.

His WHIP is too high and he has to be on the 40-man.

I expect that many teams, like the Yankees did with Enns and Littell, will use a trade opportunity to clear 40-man space along with getting a player they want.

If an established, above average, and cost controlled pitcher was the prize, I'd have no problems moving either Kep or Rosario. Finding OF help short term isn't that hard, even if you don't like Grossman. Plus there's some depth in the minors at those positions. But I would have to be bringing back a very good starting pitcher in that swap.
