Article: Twins Trade Garcia To Yankees For Two Pitching Prospects

Recommended Posts

FWIW, some rational Yankee fans here don't mind the deal at all:

http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/newsstand/discussion/mlbtr_twins_yankees_moving_toward_jaime_garcia_trade/

I suspect the Yankee fans that don't like it are the more obnoxious, prospect-overrating, and average-MLB-player underrating type. Although that type seems pretty numerous, and it can still be worthwhile to annoy them. :)

Thank Goodness TD doesn't have any of those guys!

I like that Fangraph comp to Radke, although I have no idea how realistic/likely that is.

I learned a long time ago to ignore any and all Radke comps. Brad Radke was a very good pitcher without great stuff. He pitched to his absolute ceiling, which should never be used as a basis of comparison to a prospect because literally any player has a remote chance of playing to their absolute ceiling.

Write up on minor league ball. I'm liking this deal more and more. The question with Littell, from where I stand is whether or not this season is a breakout and the beginning of something more or just an outlier... If it's a breakout, we got a real good pitcher. I'm guessing the Yankees think otherwise or they would not have traded him.

Colon has to be done after today, right? Gibson plus Enn or some other auditioning starter, right? Edit: oh yeah, Santiago... let's hope he gets healthy and dealt in August?

What contender would want Santiago? Waste of time. If necessary, just promote a AAA player for the playoff push instead....

This stacks up as:

Atlanta wanted to shed payroll, so we took Garcia and Recker.  They get a lottery ticket in Ynoa.

New York wanted Garcia, was busy negotiating on Sonny Grey, but did not want to add payroll (are they at the limit?  beyond?)

So, Twins take the financial hit, get two prospects closer in to MLB and give up one and get one start from Garcia.

Yanks get a professional SP, give up two guys they would have trouble protecting on the 40-man.

Win, win, win.

Wow, I really like this trade. Trading essentially Ynoa and $4M for Littell and Enns is a solid deal. Littell has some solid upside in the rotation and Enns has a chance to be a major leaguer, though I'm not as high on him as some are. Great trade.

I have to imagine Gibson takes Garcia's spot in the rotation. Maybe Enns/Gonsalves could take Colon's spot sooner than later?

I read thru this and Twins "may" have taken the Yankees in a trade, flipped a good pitcher after one start, some happiness with the Twins' front office...

This is the Twins, that I have been a fan at 8 yrs. old and Twins Daily Site??????????

Feels like another alternate Universe that involves no math   :go:

;)

Math was involved: $4,000,000,000.

I like this deal a lot. Littell has a great curve, low 90's fastball and is developing a slider that i heard is near unhittable at times. That to me sounds like a solid #3 / #4. Plus he's 21 and is up in AA ball. If thats true then this is a great find. Enns looks appears to be a solid reliever type and he has 4 pitches. Very positive trade from this FO, feeling good vibes.

Now lets see what we can get for Kintzler and Santana. You don't have to trade them but if they can get a couple of very solid SP prospects close to the majors AA or higher i will feel a lot better heading into 2018 and 2019. Exactly the kind of moves this franchise needs to inject some quality pitching prospects into the minors without having to trade away any of the core offensive players at the majors. Perhaps i was wrong about Falvey and Levine.

What was the point of trading for a pitcher only to trade him away after one good start?

They made a modest move to show the locker room they had their back.

The locker room responded by getting swept.

At that point there was really no reason to keep Garcia anymore. Of course it's an odd situation, but I like that they roll with the punches.

I feel like the old FO would have felt obligated to keep Garcia for some reason.

It would be kinda cool if we got back into the race now. Especially if some Garcia replacement went on a nice run...

Correct.

Nobody they have dealt or will deal is good enough to preclude us from winning without them.

And that includes Santana, who hasn't really helped the team much since the middle of May.

If it were me, I would have waited until after the Dodgers series to decide whether to buy or sell.

But you know what? The Twins upgraded the team by doing this, they were smart not to wait. The two moves together are masterful. They showed some elite sophistication not seen in these parts since the Pierzynski trade.
