Article: BREAKING: Twins Acquire Garcia From Braves

Recommended Posts

I think the same thing was said about that Kevin Jepsen deal a couple of years ago and now Hu is on the 40 man roster for Tampa and part of their future.

Hu was doing very well as a starter in A+; Ynoa is not doing well in Rookie ball. If everything goes right for Ynoa over the next few years, he could be 2015 Hu in 2019. He could also be worse.

Garcia > Jepsen.

It's a good move.

Regarding Recker, the Twins currently have Garver and Murphy at Rochester and Paulino and Rohlfing at Charlotte. The question is, who comes off the 400-man for him.

The Twins have to now decide who stays and who goes among Mejia, Gibson, Colon, Santiago, Garcia for three spots. Throw Ge in the mix, and let's see some new names in the rotation for the second half. Assuming Mejia will go back to the minors (because he can). We might have seen the last of Santiago and Colon has to pitch like he means it. Does anyone want to see Gee get a chance in the rotation?

Just remember that the next big happening will be after August 1 when you throw goes out there and see if anyone wants to claim them. That's where you hope Santiago puts up a couple of good starts, Colon maybe shows some life. If nothing else, you can hope someone claims Gimenez, let's say (who will be a free agent) which makes you happy that you do have Recker for AAA if you bring up Murphy or Garver. But right now, the Twins will have FIVE catchers on their 40-man? And I would rather see them try and pass Recker thru waivers than the younger Murphy.

Wow. $800,000 for a 15-year-old. Sometimes you do have to keep in mind the investment pricetag in a player when you do they trade them. At that price, he was a pretty good thought of prospect at one time.

I don't think Colon needs to be mentioned when discussing the rotation going forward. Meijia sent down? I think he's easily been our third best starter. For a few games he was out performing all the others. Needs to learn to finish guys off. I had finally given up on Gibby the Nibbly but, sucker that i am, he's got me hoping again! Gibby! You can do it buddy!

Santana

Berrios

MEIJIA

Garcia

FYIY, I had Ynoa as the Twins' 20th prospect last off-season with an ETA of 2020 (which after this season seems generous) with Jay, Romero, Gonsalves, Mejia, Burdi, Graterol, Stewart, Melotakis all ahead of him, and the other former Twin of today, Justin Haley one stop behind at 21.

Really this trade was Ynoa for Garcia and Haley for Recker.   The first part I can deal with.  Ynoa has mechanical issues big time and regressed this season.

The second part makes me think that something else might be brewing, because I cannot see how would anyone in their right mind trade Haley for Recker, instead of picking up a free agent catcher from the independent leagues.

I guess I am a little surprised the Braves settled for that deal  I thought Garcia was possibly one of the next best pitchers to acquire after Sonnie G.  I thought the Braves might have held out for more but maybe this was far and away the best deal they were going to get.

Don't get me wrong it is a good get for the Braves.  It is a move I wish the Twins could have pulled off in prior seasons.  I still think Ynoa makes it as a high upside reliever in MLB.  If everything works then he can be a starting pitcher as well.  He is  a long ways away though and the Twins have other young arms to work with as well.

I think it was a good trade for the Twins to make.  The Twins are desperate for just average pitching and the FO got something done without giving up too much of the farm.  We'll see how this works out 5 years down the line.

If the Recker move/Haley DFA is just to call up Garver, then I really don't get it.   If the Twins want to call up Garver, they can call up Rohlfing to back up Murphy at AAA.   Then either keep the promotion train going or sign or trade for a catcher who isn't on the 40 man.  Falvey and Levine have talked about how valuable 40 man roster spots are - and right now they have 5 catchers on it - so this just feels totally strange to me.  (Unless, of course, there's a trade happening.)

Hu is a swing man, that trade is not going to hurt the Twins long term.

Well it sure as hell didn't help as the 2015 team didn't make it to the playoffs and Jepsen was so horrible that he got cut halfway through 2016 on a horrible team.  I'd still rather have six cost controlled years of a swing man than what the Twins got out of Jepsen.

Not what I've read. Pretty sure the Braves are paying the rest of that 4 mill off, and picking up 2/3 of Recker's remaining salary.

Per Jon Heyman, the Braves are only sending 100k, the Twins are paying the rest.

I can think of several reasons to like the Garcia/Ynoa trade.

- Ynoa is a distant, uncertain prospect

- Garcia is a decent starting lefty for right now

- Atlanta is paying Garcia's salary for this season (really?)

- Against NL teams, Garcia provides a legitimate hitter in the pitcher slot (4 reasons, his grand salami)

- Twins have a very good fielding team, which helps guys like Garcia

All this paints the deal as an excellent bet for the Twins. The team's D will allow Garcia to more aggressively attack the zone without much fear. If he collapses, the bullpen is already accustomed to that happening about half the time. If he lasts into the 7th or better, it lets the pen rest a bit. Heck, he might even contribute an RBI against NL teams.

I was actually okay with Burdi for Garcia because Burdi might lose a few mph after another surgery. These flame-throwing RP's seem to blow out their arms with alarming regularity.

According to Jon Heyman, the Braves are NOT paying any of Garcia's remaining salary.

I do agree that if the Twins knew they weren't going to make the playoffs and Jepsen would terrible the next year they wouldn't make that trade.

As often mentioned, the problem wasn't that trade, it was that it was the only one. Similarly, if Garcia is the only addition by the front office that would be a failure.
