Article: No Garcia Trade: Braves Balk At Twins’ Prospect’s Health

Yes, this isn't an aggressive sell the farm year but that doesn't mean that they should continue to run Colon or similarly awful pitchers out there every 5th day. And then there is Gibson every 4th day. Is he decent now? I don't know but I would feel a lot more comfortable with him in the 5th spot.

Gonsalves or Jorge might be an option but Romero has to be getting shut down soon (or shifted to the bullpen. He isn't an option to pitch into September imo.

I'm pro trade. A move like Garcia is exactly what they should do, and a similar move or two with the pen.

As much as it might scare people Gibson has matched Santana' performance pretty closely in June and July. I definitely am not saying he has pitched good.

Count me as on that is glad that Gibson is pitching better.  As much as the guy drives me crazy early on in the season he has decent stuff and just needs to trust himself and be aggressive.  If only he could do that it in April and May, all the way through the season.  Would go a long way towards solving this teams starting pitching issues.

Which is why I lean toward Gonsalves. He's not on the 40 man but he's pitching well in AA and is 23 years old. I don't think the Twins should care too much about burning options at this point.

Isn't that Chiefs point?

I personally think half measures are fine this year. Contra this post, I would find Garcia to be of some substance, and would like a couple of relievers in the same mold. Not sure what pr it actually brings, but I think there is value in propping up a young team and trying to compete until the end of the season.

I suppose my disagreement is with the pitcher himself and not the actual move. They can make a move or two if they want, that's fine by me. It's just that to me Garcia looks like a guy who half the board will be screaming to DFA after a month and the other half will be screaming about losing Prospect X for nothing.

If others think Garcia looks like an honest attempt at improving the club I understand why missing out on this trade is frustrating.

Not here.  I like him better in the bullpen.  And there is a real need for him there.

My girlfriend tells me I could communicate better, maybe she's right! I meant that one of those guys could go on a ten game run like Duffy did a couple of years ago. I like Duffy in the pen too

Which is fair, but there aren't exactly boatloads of talented starters available. Small, incremental upgrades count too.

An option would not need to be used.

If they don't find a better solution, call him up August 1. Stick with him through August. If they don't send him back, no option will be used. Service time starts but he is already 23.

But trading for Jaime Garcia isn't aggressive, he's not a very good pitcher. He would be more half measures; I'm so tired of these kinds of putzy moves which are more PR than substance.

If they aren't going to make serious moves to contend this year, I don't want them to trade for a pig, put makeup on it and try to sell that as an honest to goodness attempt to win.

A proven vet is not a pig. If you expect a Greinke or Kershaw in every trade, you are always going to be disappointed.

Correct.

They could actually send Gonsalves back down to the minors for up to 19 days too and still not burn an option year.  It takes 20+ days on optional assignment to count as an option year.  So they could call him up now, send him back August 13, and then recall him Sept. 1, or something like that.  (Or send him back for Chattanooga's playoffs, or whatever.)

I guess I'm in the minority, but with his record of poor strikeout ability, poor walk rate, poor velocity, an NL only starter going from the worst division in baseball to the AL, I'd actually trust Gibson and Santiago more.

And I don't trust them at all.

For what it's worth, I've always had an aversion to soft tossing lefties who don't miss bats, not just Garcia. I've also had a strong aversion to NL only starters for quite awhile now. Those wells have been poisoned for me.

There isn't any lean possible here. Romero should be getting shut down. Gonsalves has thrown 430 IP overall and 140 IP in each of the last two seasons. Romero has thrown 280 IP and his 100 IP has already exceeded his career high. Gonsalves has experience (AA last season) and (fewer) injury concerns.

The 40 man roster doesn't concern me at all. A lot of dead weight that could be jettisoned. Several are nothing more than live bodies to toss in there for lack of a better option. I think you wait until the 2nd week of August to call up Gonsalves but they really have nothing (Colon...) in the 5th spot.

I probably trust Gibson more too, but Santiago isn't currently pitching. I would prefer Garcia to Colon at the moment.
