Anyone a board game nerd?

Since age 7. Mostly war and strategy games (think Avalon Hill and up), although 221B Baker Street was also a huge fav. Got into tabletop RPGs at 17 and haven't much looked back.

Rail Baron! An Avalon Hill fav of mine!

My circle of friends aren't really into board games, I mostly play when family comes to visit ... board and card games.

As a "retired" tabletop D&D'er (still hit digital as much as time allows), I'm all over the Betrayal at Baldur's Gate board when it comes out this fall.

Have difficulty finding friends (and especially couple friends) to come over to play them.

This is the bane of tabletop rpg's, not enough nerds (without a life) to go around.

Board games would be fun but I work until 9PM each night (late start) and travel most weekends. I am enjoying the new card games that are coming out though. Exploding Kittens (1st expansion is a must) and Sushi Go are both camping favorites among my friends. CAH would be great but typically our groups are at least 50% non native English speakers (I live in Taiwan) and it would be a big struggle to understand.

Are there any recommendations for quick to play/learn card games out there? I also play these with my ESL students occasionally.

I love Rail Baron. Probably my all time favorite.

If you're looking to beef up your inventory of board games, Amazon is having a one day sale for 100 different board games today. Up to 40% off on a few of them.

I picked up Grand Austria Hotel and Kingdomino. A few of them were showing up out of stock but have come back.

Also in the sale is Isle of Skye which I really enjoyed. It has a somewhat unique mechanism, to me anyway, in price setting and bidding. I also enjoy legends of andor (more of a dungeon crawl) with the right group that is in this sale.

We got the Terraforming Mars board game. It won a lot of awards and was the big game last year. Really, really fun game to play.

I played Terraforming Mars for the second time on Friday night and absolutely love the game. And most definitely will buy it. Even better I dominated the game but had a lot of luck (12 points from awards) and things that worked well without knowing that they would work out so well.

My first big benefit was placing a city first with Tharsis Corp and placing a second city early and controlling a valuable area of the board that I later completely forested. I also got each set of production going and especially plants which allowed me to cheaply forest around my cities.

And my friend's friend made some amazing 3-D tiles and I hope he will make some for me when I get the game later this year. I didn't think I needed any fancy tiles until I saw these.

Favorite games right now - mostly quick and easy to learn/play card games

Sushi Go (I recommend Sushi Go Party though)

Zany Penguins

Coup

Lost Cities (played with a 6 colored generic deck)

Arboretum 2 player (played with the same deck as above)

Terraforming Mars - I don't have the correct group to play board games very often but I really love this game (don't own it yet)

Codenames (Pictures) - very good large group (6-10+ players) game

Exploding Kittens - still makes the list but better with students and brand new games (a lot of luck involved)

I also have One Night Ultimate Werewolf but have only played once so far with my oldest group of students. Hive Pocket looks like a great game but haven't played it much since it is a 2 player game.

Next up on my buy list (probably around Christmas time)

Terraforming Mars

7 Wonders

Bang the Dice Game

Badger Deck - 10 suited deck with 20 cards in each suit - great for travel or trying new games

Dixit (possibly wait)

Onitama - wait since it is a 2 player game

Lords of Scotland - interesting gameplay (or get Condotierre if I can find it)

The boardgame bug has completely bitten me and I keep setting up board game nights with friends. Cheap shipping to Taiwan on Amazon is also killing me.

7 wonders
Jaipur
Ticket to ride
Carcassonne
7 wonders duel

Keith Law has a great list

Here is Keith Law's list for 2017 (new games only)

https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2017/12/the-10-best-board-games-of-2017.html

I haven't heard of many of these but he certainly has an interesting list

1. Azul - sounds like a fantastic game

2. Whistle Stop - another train game

3. Photosynthesis - a game about growing trees and avoiding shadows (slow growth)

4. Wasteland Express - post-apocalyptic delivery game

5. Ex Libris - a set collection game that requires alphabetical sorting of book titles and includes banned books - looks very interesting but expensive

6. Skyward

7. Yamatai - includes the vermilion Japanese torii's as part of the game - love it

8. La Flamme Rouge - a bicycle race game - sold

9. Mole Rats in Space - from the creator of Pandemic - simplified coop for children

10. Barenpark

Just a few other pretty solid games

  1. Voyages of Marco Polo - I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. You have to go to different cities and meet certain contracts. You only get five turns so it's a fast game (30 mins) but really competitive.
  2. Viticulture - wine making game. Funny review of it here.
  3. Castles of Burgundy. Really cutthroat game. My wife and I have gotten actively mad at each other over this game and if you have four players, it's just evil.

Bought Pandemic for the family. It's very fun, and definitely recommend it.

But a couple things. First, some of the rules are a little hard to understand the first couple of times you play it. Second, once you beat it, it kind of loses it's luster.

But, it's the first time we've played a cooperative board game, and we really enjoyed that aspect of it.

I've gotten this game for Mrs Ash as a stocking stuffer... we'll see how she likes it.

Took me a bit to find this thread. Didn’t realize it was as old as it was. Here’s a new one. I ordered it because, well, lol, I just couldn’t not.
