Article: Twins Close To Acquiring LHP Jaime Garcia?

Recommended Posts

It's poker time Falvine, if you had a fair deal on the line, and everyone was satisfied (not saying happy here), then a leak happens/"other parties are interested", don't increase your offer.....you call that bluff every time.

Incidentally, this sounds very familiar with the Dozier trade talks when all of the sudden other teams were interested (when likely only the Dodgers were)....

This player would be a nice add for the Twins, but I don't think the player is so good that Atlanta would expect a bidding war over him. Just my opinion.

then I misunderstood again! I thought you meant that if a team leaks, just stop talking at that point out of some principle. But, if the price they want is fair, would you still do it?

The Braves move into a brand new sparkling stadium. Expecting to make a splash they trade for Garcia to show their fans and Atlanta they are serious on winning Now they suck. They're getting decent crowds but not sell outs and Cobb County is on the hook for paying off the stadium bonds. So, if this true, the Braves are throwing the towel in, trading a starter for prospect. The loyal Braves fans are ok with this but to the general public, it's meh. Except if you live in Cobb County.

Can you imagine if the Twins had done this the 1st year in Target Field.

They just averaged 40,000 for their first two series after the All-Star break, including two day games, one of them during a weekday. Fans must hate them.

why? Why give up on a negotiation if you want the player over that? We see leaks every day, it's part of the game.

I'm not understanding the concern about who leaked it.

Reality is this. It is the Atlanta GM's job to shop offers and get the best possible one. That was going on regardless of whether or not the press found out.

More like what the poster above said. The Twins aren't likely to raise their offer because "other teams" are interested. I doubt Garcia on a 2-3 month rental is that valuable. Edited by Hosken Bombo Disco

Someone on the Braves chat site said they had some Twins related source that claimed it was a catcher.

I will be very disappointed if it is Garver. I know a lot of folks are content with Gimenez's .200 BA, as he is an interesting player, but Garver has an OPS of .912 this year. He has been hitting well all year. He's also played some 1B and OF.

If he were primarily an outfielder with those stats there are several posters here who would have spent some energy insisting that Rosario be replaced by him.

Which chat site...because that very well could have been me as the "source" because the Braves have been big fans of Garver for a while.

Looking at the Braves top 30, they seem pretty deep with pitching prospects and Sickles agrees with this. I still think the Braves are wanting somebody close to MLB ready because of the new stadium they're in. They seem short on outfield prospects and 3rd base. Wouldn't surprise me they are looking for a Granite or Jorge or combo that may include a relief prospect.

Outfield is the deepest position in the organization. A top 30 does not indicate the depth of an organization...

I'm guessing Wade or Granite, personally. It fits their needs, I think. Garver is also likely.

I think they want someone close to the majors, given where they are in the process, and I don't think they want more pitchers.

Why not? They drafted a pitcher this year. They have acquired a pitcher in nearly every trade made in the last offseason, even after having tremendous depth in pitching.

At some point, they need to get some hitters. But then, you know way more about this than me. I'm just a Twins' fan talking about the Braves.....

As for the draft, I'd think we spent months talking about the Twins not worrying about anything other than best available plus gaming the system. I assume that's true for the Braves in round 1, so I'm not sure that is the same thing.

They have a collection of hitters. Their top 3 prospects in many lists right now will be hitters right now in Acuna, Albies, and Maitan. I put up a midseason top 50 before I left Tomahawk Take, and 30 of the 50 were hitters.

Sounds like Braves are trying to pit teams against each other to maximize the return.  I would hope the Twins stand pat and don't give up too much for Garcia.  Walk away if we have to.

Not what is coming out of Atlanta at all. Sounds like Twins had concerns with medicals and changed previous agreed-on $ amounts, so prospect wasn't appropriate in the Braves' eyes anymore in that view. That's where the deal is from guys I have talked with.

You fail to mention the games prior to all star break where they were mid 30's. I didn't say they were playing in a empty stadium. The jest was they weren't selling out. And, the voters off Cobb County are mad about being stuck with the bill. They voted out the Commissioners who voted for this.

If the Braves are doing this, I would just walk away and hope Colon has more than another start and then turn to Gee. Yes, I'm not sold on Gibson remaining, and Santiago will return, but his stock is slim as he'll be a free agent. (Two pitchers the Twins hopefully could've flipped, if they had produced).

@BGB, what would be a fair price for Garcia in Twins prospects / players/ $$ in your opinion?

It all depends on the money. I'd say the range of Garver, Thorpe, Wade, Graterol would be a feasible expectation to be included.

The intriguing names would be Blankenhorn or Baddoo. Baddoo's a Georgia guy who could be of interest and fits the high-ceiling profile in the low-minors that the team has in position players.

If the Twins are eating all funds, I'd wager it's a minor league reliever type, like a Jake Reed/Andrew Vazquez/etc. along with a rookie ball guy from the Braves.

please tell me they aren't being cheap. I mean, if they think he can help, take on the money. It's not tens of millions here.....

Sounds like the Twins were going to take on all of it and want the Braves to take on roughly 55% of the remaining salary now based on medicals.

Alright so following the axiom that a fair trade is one that leaves all parties dissatisfied, what say we Twins fans?

Mitch Garver + $4.7m?

Given that I've wanted Garver here for months, this would bum me out. I think it's fair. I won't love it. I am not a true believer this year, and I am not a fan of trading 1 prospect for 1 move. I hate this half way stuff. If that is the only move, I'll hate it. If it is one of 2-4 moves, I might like it more.

well, that seems silly. Either they think he's going to help, and should pay for that help, or they don't. We are talking less than half a year, and a couple million dollars.....

Yeah, I don't know. I know Coppy won't let out any player that he is targeting, so any speculation would be just knowing guys they've liked in the past.

And they spent years under budget. Years of terrible baseball. Get people excited, the boost in attendance from a playoff chase has to augment a lot of that anyways.
