Article: Twins Close To Acquiring LHP Jaime Garcia?

Recommended Posts

A rotation of Santana, Berrios, Garcia, Meija, Gibson could be alright. A backend bullpen of Duffey, Curtiss, Romero, Hildenberger, Rogers, Kintzler could be alright.

The offense, as is, with Buxton elevating his game slightly, could be alright.

Throw in another, cost controlled starter for Gibson, and you just might talk me in to the possibility of the Twins making a run.

As of 7:14 this morning mlbtraderumors has reported the deal has not been finalized.  May be a medical thing or maybe teams cannot agree on player/players in the deal.

I read that too. So, 2 scenarios play out:

Braves take on salary, expect high level prospect

Twins take on salary, expect to give up low level prospect.

I hope Len III is right

There is a pretty big difference between "decent prospect" and "good prospect"

This car for sale runs pretty good.

This car for sell runs pretty decent.

I'm buying the one that runs good!

I think the order goes:

Pretty Bad

Bad

Ok

Pretty Decent

Decent

Pretty Good

Good

Very Good

Great

Excellent

Notable position players not in yesterday's minor league lineups.

AAA: John Ryan Murphy, Edgar Corcino

AA: Travis Harrison

A+: Luis Arraez (DL)

A: Amaurys Minier

R: Kolton Kendrick, Akil Baddoo

I think Baddoo was promoted yesterday so that could explain why he was out.  But, overall, all the top position player prospects played yesterday.   Maybe it's a pitcher?  Or maybe it's not as common to not play a position player who might get traded? (injury risk lower?)

I don't think the Twins would move off of Stewart this quickly. While he's a lighting rod around here, he was on Klaw's top 100 entering the season, the Twins probably have a few people in the system who think highly of him and he's relatively young for AA still. I think it's more likely to be a guy like Blankenhorn or Wade type player.

So what if we ARE giving up one of our TOP prospects and are also getting back a Top 15 prospect of theirs? Wasnt the rumor that we are also getting a prospect? I have heard a lot of speculation on "who are we giving up" and nothing on "who else are we getting".

Maybe I shouldnt suggest this because it could just blow up TD but...IF we were giving up a Gordon type...Who else do we get back?

I'd add Thorpe and Stewart to that list. Though I don't know how Stewart does it, but his last 6 starts have worked, strikeouts be danged.

I value Thorpe more highly than either Gonsalves or Romero so... yeah. Definitely agree on that one.

Stewart? Eh, still too valuable but I value him quite a bit less than those three. But Stewart is approaching reasonable return area for a Garcia rental.

Well, we only really have one "Gordon type" and the Braves have no particular need for him, so I don't think we have to worry. Could be we send them a pitching prospect and get a lesser prospect or non-prospect in return (like Busenitz last year).

Kohl Stewart has given up 1 or zero runs in 5 of his last 6 and the 6 was a "quality start" Probably hasn't recovered the trade value but not a guy you want to lose.

Yeah, I phrased that wrong. I meant that Stewart is a good prospect but I wouldn't mind giving him up in this trade assuming another prospect comes back. He'd be bad to give up 1 for 1 and it would be selling low.

Ugh, I've been bracing for impact since the rumors started. If it's Brusdar Graterol, I'm gonna be pretty disappointed. He's just about to turn 19, so he's a complete wild card, but he throws in the high 90s. Not the kind of guy the Twins should be flipping. But I guess whoever they're trading away they must not like very much, and Falvey was brought in for his pitching prowess.

This is what I'm most interested in, really. Who doesn't Falvey like? This will be an interesting test of how he views the org and wants to change it going forward. None of the players in question are "his" guys so I expect we may be surprised by the result.

The Braves would be wise to demand a better prospect rather than demand the Twins (or any other team) pay the entirety of his salary. They are doing well at the gate this year. They can't be pressed against their budget.

Since they can pay, they can seek the single best prospect offered. That is so much better for them than to take a package or a lesser prospect and dollars. If a team feels stretched at the prospect they can the offer to send back a lesser prospect or cash rather than lower the bar on the return. They have a lot of time between now and the deadline. Any deal they take now would have to exceed their expectations.

Over the long term, the Twins will likely lose on this deal. It is part of doing business as a contender at the trade deadline. It is great to be a contender though. Whether it is Thorpe or Blankenhorn or Stewart or Garvin, it is going to hurt. The gamble is that the Twins go 7-6 as opposed to 5-8 in the 13 Garcia starts. Those two wins can offset that hurt.

The Twins are in the same situation, though. They're waaaaaaay under their payroll threshold.

I expect the Twins to take on most, if not all, of the salary because why not? If the Braves want to deal with someone else for a better prospect, let them do that.
