Sounds like I might be alone, but I'm not expecting a soft tossing career NL'er to do well in a mid season trade to the AL. Particularly one who is barely average when he's at his best and has a walk rate trending in the wrong direction.

If it is for Garver I am hoping the deal falls through.  Giving up all those years of control of catcher who might actually be able to hit for an injury prone pitcher that is gone in three months is not a good deal.

 

If Atlanta pulls this off I want their front office to be our front office.

I'd be fine with JRM or Navaretto.. Garver or Rortvedt though.... no way.  Problem is that I highly doubt ATL would want those two.  Stewart, Jorge, Granite, Wade (that one would hurt but ultimately I'd accept that), Sleegers.  All of those guys I'd be fine shipping off.

trading a low level prospect for 1/2 a year of a player is not a major trade.

In all seriousness, though, I guess I see this as a deal where this FO really doesn't want to get fleeced by giving up the wrong lottery ticket.  I'm sure there are plenty of counter-arguments, but I immediately think of a Zach Wheeler for Beltran trade, or a Meija for a year-and a half of Nunez.

 

I have no idea who is actually being discussed, or if my point is even relevant--maybe it is all money and medicals.  But if they are haggling about the difference between Lewis Thorpe and Eduardo Del Rosario, that could be pretty "major" down the road.  Our opinions may vary when it comes to semantics.

I agree with you.  I thought good catchers bought you more than paying all the salary of a rental.  If they are going to use Garver as trade chip then trade for something for the future don't just give him away.

 

If I were the Twins I would just stand pat.  Lower tier teams will be willing to dump for salary by August.  This guy is not a difference maker and looks like an injury risk to boot.

What is your opinion that you are trying to support?

Bottom third of 36 pitchers in a 15 team  means absolutely nothing given that the nl has used 127 starting pitchers By WAR he is 41. That looks better.  By any metric of pitchers starting 5 or mre games he is in the 40-50 range.  All any of it means is he has good days and bad ones, just like any league average pitcher.  1/3 of the games he stunk. 1/3 he was very good. That is better yhan the other 4/5 pitchers the Twins have thrown out there

To me, an average (if he's lucky) 2-month rental wouldn't be a worth a Top-20 prospect if picking up the majority or entirety of the remaining contract. Someone outside of there, fine, and adjust accordingly based on the money - but I wouldn't go above 15 for this particular rental.

Maybe. But I think Levine (who is certainly in charge of this) has a pretty good rep around the league. I certainly am not worried about him getting an AJ Preller reputation, for sure. But teams might think the Twins squeeze more than they should.

I appreciate the FO getting out there and trying to find a deal.  I for one am glad they are not going to overpay for the kind of pitcher that will come much cheaper in the next three weeks.  Will be interesting to see what Atlanta gets.  They seem to be master traders always getting more value than they deserve.  Keep working Twins FO maybe a better deal is out there.

To be honest I am a little bit.  The thing is the Twins aren't in a great position to be buyers and currently don't have great assets to sell that won't impact the current team.  A team that is currently in contention. You have to be willing to have the resources to overpay if you are going to be a buyer at the deadline.  I think most GM's around the league realize the position the Twins are in but I do worry that when we come calling other GM's won't take us seriously.
