Article: Twins Close To Acquiring LHP Jaime Garcia?

Recommended Posts

Update Friday 4:44 - It's now been about 24 hours since Ken Rosenthal first tweeted that the Twins were close to acquiring Jaime Garcia. As things sit right now, Garcia is set to start for Atlanta and the trade talks are on hold as other teams are now involved. This has been very interesting, with several twists and turns. It will be nice to see it resolved, whatever that means. As fans, however, it is nice to know that the Twins front office is being aggressive and pursuing players as buyers at this time.

--------------------------------------

Ken Rosenthal was first to report that the Minnesota Twins are close to acquiring veteran LHP Jaime Garcia from the Atlanta Braves.

Recently Rhett Bollinger tweeted that the Twins will trade a minor leaguer to the Braves to complete the deal. Jon Heyman has confirmed that it is a one-for-one deal.

As of midnight Thursday night/Friday morning, the deal was not complete, but most seem to believe that it will still happen.

As the deal becomes final and we learn more about the specifics, we will update this article. The 31-year-old Garcia debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008. He stayed in that organization through the 2016 season when he was traded.

Last offseason, he was traded to Atlanta in exchange for three minor leaguers.

In 17 starts and 106 innings, Garcia is 3-7 with a 4.33 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. He has walked 40 and struck out 81.

While the front office has said that it wasn't interested in trading for rentals, Garcia is in the final season of a six year, $50 million deal. He is making $12 million this season. He likely has about $4 million remaining on the deal.

Per Mike Berardino (or a source of his) it's possible the trade won't be completed until Friday.

As Thursday turns into Friday, the deal has still not been finalized, though most still believe that it will happen.

Check back for updates.

Re: Haley:

He is not tradeable by the Twins. They have to return him to Boston for that to happen.

Correct me if I am wrong but did the Twins not acquire Johan Santana by trading with The Marlins, who selected him from Houston in the rule 5 draft? How would this be different other than it being in season?

You are correct, Thrylos is incorrect. Rule 5 players can be traded at any time, but their Rule 5 restrictions follow them.

Yes. Not only can Haley be traded, he already has been traded once since he was selected in the Rule 5 draft.

Rule 5 picks can be traded, the only stipulation being that the new team is under the same roster restrictions as the drafting team was.

Doing exactly what they said, not mortgaging future. Cue the "I can't believe we gave up _______ for Jamie Garcia comments.

I remember the Lew Ford for Shannon Stewart and Tyler Ladendorf for Orlando Cabrera freakout

Well they said no rentals, so not EXACTLY what they said.

It was Kielty for Stewart, and though there were a few Kielty believers, definitely nobody cared that ladendorf was traded.

Twins agree to take on a salary dump is all, I hope.

Please don't let the prospect be devisive.

I don't know. Garcia is probably a decent match for Santiago last year -- better peripherals / FIP, similar cost, 1 less year of control. I'd guess they would wait until July 31 if all they were getting offered here was salary relief.

Stop freaking out Twins fans. This is big value. For those who don't understand, typically when the player being traded has "yet to be named", it usually means you're not giving up a top prospect. I too would love to get a guy like Sonny Gray. However, he is being linked to prospects like Derek Fisher in Houston. Sorry Twins fans, pass on that. I'll take Garcia for nothing, any day of the week.
