Article: Miguel Sano, Ervin Santana Named All-Stars

Recommended Posts

On Sunday night, 2017 MLB All-Stars were named. The Minnesota Twins will be represented by two players. Ervin Santana and Miguel Sano will head to Miami next week as All Stars.Miguel Sano had been leading fan voting until the final week when Cleveland's Jose Ramirez (and Toronto's Josh Donaldson) passed him. Some are demanding a recount. Nevertheless, Sano will be going to Miami as a reserve.

Ervin Santana has had a difficult month of June, but he was quite deserving of being named an All-Star. He has the league's fourth lowest ERA (3.07), fifth lowest WHIP (1.09), and the second lowest batting average against (.204).

Sano will also participate in the Home Run Derby.

Interesting that the NL pitching staff has 6 relievers and the AL team only has 3 (and Betances is undeserving) .

Devenski, Parker and Osunu must be feeling very slighted.

That's nice, but I lost interest in All Star contests in all sports long ago.  In the ancient days the all stars played the game, now it is like little leagues - everyone has to get into the game and by the end you have no idea who the real all stars were.

Not everyone selected gets to play in the game.  Just sayin'.

But it doesn't mean anything except for the fans to enjoy seeing their players.

In the ancient days the "all stars" were the same guys year after year no matter who actually was performing.

I understand and I am happy for the fans who enjoy the game.  I like the exercise of naming the team and that is it.  In the old days of Mays, Williams, Aaron, etc. they did more than play the first three innings with the front line all stars.  Now the replacements play more than the starters.    Imagine a game like 1941 when Ted Williams goes 1 for 4 and hits a gaming winning home run in the 9th.  http://www.baseball-almanac.com/asgbox/07081941.shtml

By that time today's all star starters are catching their plane home.  http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/155065792/v6448299/1941-asg-ted-williams-walkoff-home-run

Those early games were played with intensity and each side wanted to really be the best, no world series home stand on the line, just the fun of the game.  I am less excited by the reason decades.

Glad for both.  Hope this increases Santana's value as a trading chip.

Every GM/CBO (chief baseball officer) will make any trade involving any player at any time if he/she feels it will be a net gain for the organization. The Twins could probably come out ahead by trading Santana before August 1, but it all depends on the offer. This will be an interesting 4 weeks.

23rd in FIP, tied for 20th in fWAR, 13th in QS%, 27th in K%.

fip and fwar are tied together. I think there's enough doubt about fip out there to go with b-ref for most. k% is 24th on fangraphs (not that there' that much difference) but pretty good pitchers can still live in that area. Gotta admit, I didn't know they tracked QS%.

just like ERA and bWAR are tied together and plenty have serious issues with ERA too.

IMO, the All-star game should be awarded based on results that actually happened. FIP and fWAR should have zero bearing on an all star argument.
The K rate is a legit concern though.

Ah, yes the results that actually happened.  The results (ERA) that evaluate pitchers' performance by taking into account not only what the pitcher did, but what his defense (to include the catcher who is half the battery) did too. Got it.

Some might consider that a team effort and not just a pitcher's effort.

Then there are the judgments of official scorers that get considered too.

As a fan of the Twins, I AM glad Santana got in though.  I just think there are more deserving candidates not only in the starter department, but the reliever department as well.

I think fip is a great stat, but I wouldn't consider it when selecting an all star. I would definitely consider k rate though, but that would still go behind ip and era.
