One of the throw away lines in Passan's article and mentioned in Rosenthal's article as well was that the league is in the midst of investigating as many as 15 teams for international violations. The most recent CBA did give the commish's office a lot more teeth in the international market to discipline, so this could be an interesting offseason.

whoa! That would be huge. And not surprising in the least.

I would really like that. Anything that could help these kids be better treated is fine with me.

I'm having to deal with someone saying this is basically the prime reason for an international draft on another forum. That does nothing to help kids. The Braves are being investigated for domestic draft dealings, and there are plenty of financial shenanigans in the international draft as well.

punish the kids for the sins of the super rich! good idea!

I prefer a much larger pool, like in the past where bad teams get more money.

Really, I prefer a thing like a draft and a pool for both IFA and US born players........

The worst teams get, say, 10MM and can sign 1-3 players (no more than 3). Say, the ten worst teams. Players can sign or not, but if they don't, they go into the next pool where the next ten teams have $5MM to spend on 1-3 players.....then the next pool is basically unlimited, but no player can get more than $1MM, and no team can sign more than, say, 3 for that money, and the rest all get 100-500K.

Every player has more control over where they go, and more players get more money. Those are rough numbers requiring more precision, and I'd lower that pool for IFA.

For IFA from other professional leagues, who are 18+....probably just put them in the US pool.....

I don't know what the answer is. I'm not that smart. But when you see the documentaries on these kids living down there where they'll inject anything into their bodies to make it, where they are sexually abused by trainers and scouts and where they are using forged documents all just to try and get a better life for their families, I hope someone smart tries to improve their lives.

Baseball can't fix the whole culture, though. That's asking a lot......

they can fix their role, but not all of what goes on there. And yes, their role is largely bleeped up....

I'm not sure what mlb can do to change the culture. Allowing unlimited money would probably be more *fair* but it wouldn't clean up the system. It would probably raise the stakes even more for corruption of the players.

The everyone is doing it defense probably has some merit, but other franchises aren't losing GMs.

Yeah, Coppy was dumb enough to put his name on paper. Usually everything is verbal and handshake. That put too strong a tie to him.

However, plenty have lost jobs. Jim Bowden has been blacklisted in MLB because of how he ran international affairs (skimming off of international bonuses). Ben Cherington had already resigned when the Red Sox got punished, but they did have two international scouts lose their jobs. The White Sox had an employee fired a few years back after an investigation, but they had already moved on in GM, so that wasn't an issue.

This offseason could bring more - heck, it might bring more with the Braves as Hart is not in the clear at all.
