Nah, I'm sure the artists who created the leg sculptures was making a point about how the world of adults looks to small children and, by extension, trying to remind us adults just how small we are in the macroverse.

Me, I lean more toward ugly a** art that no one with any sense would ever buy, so, therefore, this was commissioned by city government to reward the second cousin of a nephew who's mother was once married to a member of the city council.

I actually like the ugly brown things. It's not that I would call them beautiful in an aesthetically pleasing way, but they are provocative, and I find a truth to them, in how people in the city tend to walk around, busy, clumped, but not really seeing one another. When I'm on the street, I make a point to try and make eye contact with everyone I pass and either smile at or greet in some fashion. I am always amazed at how many people either never notice anyone around them or purposefully look away. Is this a societal 'problem?' Can't say. But that is my observation.

I hear Chicago also hosts a big band conference in December. Cementing its reputation as the windy city, i think.

But yeah, perhaps i could offer up a friendly ammendment to the game thread intro to include ChiTown amongst its assets. (something like "if not for the coorage of ChiTownTwinsFan, Chicago would be lost")

If we only had a wheel barrow, that would be something.

It's more accurate to call Chicago the Woodwindy City.

That's not a chicago thing, it is a US thing! * I don't get it. Relax, interact, enjoy life!

*the heads down, don't make eye contact / interact with other humans thing.

You realize in a big city that kind of behavior is "weird" while in a small town it's considered "normal."

Amazing how the context in which one lives influences the way one thinks, acts and perceives.

The artist anticipated smart phones and ear buds?

Business trip to ChiTown a few weeks ago.   Sorry... but not going back there ever again would be too soon.  Not that the food wasn't good (the oldest Italian restaurant in Chicago has awesome Osso Bucco btw), but I'll go back to NYC and that zoo before I willingly head back to the windy city.   Think my left eye is still twitching after the last trip :)

Chicago isn't so bad... unless you are driving in it.

My Garmin lady voice says...

"Warning... Warning... You are about to enter Chicago... take the next exit and go around the City".

"Warning... Warning... You are about to enter Chicago... I am going to recalculate constantly until you sell your car".

So that's the symbology of them, eh?

Thanks for the explanation/interpretation!

Portland reminds of Minneapolis but it seems like everybody has a dog. Nice place.

I also love hiking in the mountains and stuff. hence, Portland.

I think of Portland as 2/3 Minneapolis and 1/3 Bay Area. I've lived both places and loved both places, so it's no surprise that I love Portland.

I've been told that Portland was settled more by Easterners in comparison to Seattle by Midwesterners, but I sure don't see much Boston or New York in the people here.

Phone conversation with spinowner:

Spin: Hey, Chi ... will be heading to the game tonight ... what time should I stop by?

Chi: Anytime ... just allow enough time to get to the game!

Spin: Great! I don't have your address ...

Chi: No worries, I'll text it to you when you hang up.

Spin: Okay ... see you soon!

Spin: <waits for text>

Spin: <continues to wait for text>

Spin: <still waiting for text>

Spin: Hmmm ... <calls Chi>

Beeeeeeep: I'm sorry. The number you are trying to reach has been disconnected. No further information is available.

portland is terrific but traffic has become unbearable over the last 20 years, transforming working at home from luxury to near necessity. also, no mlb on the horizon in p-town -- not even aaa or aa (class-a in suburban hillsboro). but some very competitive adult baseball leagues that include lots of former college and pro players ...

Agreed, I don't see much NY/NJ in the people at all.

Also agreed, very similar to Mpls, but with more hippy, so your mix sounds about right to me.

traffic is terrible. We moved from hillsboro to the city this year, now I get to walk to stuff a lot. So, in many ways it is better for us now.

It's all in where you live and work. I live a mile from campus, so a 20 minute walk when the weather is decent or a 5 minute drive when it's not.

Agreed about missing baseball, but it's kind of nice not to have a die-hard local following rooting against the Twins. :) Many locals are Mariners' fans, but few are intense and many follow their childhood clubs from wherever.

I've spent most of my adult life rooting against the local teams where I've lived. It gets old.

The last Chicago guy I looked in the eye gave me a belligerent "What are you looking at a$$hole." That was my brother.

Experts say you should never look a mad dog or a Chicagoan in the eye as they consider a direct look a challenge. Even the guys in the toll booths scowled at me when I said "Hi, how's the wife and kids? Got change for a hundred?"
