Twins sign Royce Lewis for 6.7M, going to GCL

Recommended Posts

Well haven't seen this posted on here yet but Lewis is signing for 6.7M, a new record for a 1st Rd pick under the new format but still less than what Wright (7M) and McKay (7.2M) are going for. Slot is 7.7M so the Twins save 1M

And the baseball gods have given me one last gift before moving in sending Lewis to the GCL to start the season.

Wow, 7 for Wright and 7.2 for McKay?! I can't believe teams are going way over slot for those guys. I'll take Lewis and Enlow over Wright or McKay over slot any day

Neither Wright nor McKay would have required slot money at #1.

Plus we still likely could have had Enlow around slot at 35 or 37, had we wanted to take him there over Rooker or Leach.

Not saying that would have been better or anything, just saying that the comparison you made doesn't really make sense.

I was a little surprised that they said that he'd start in the GCL. Nick Gordon went right to Elizabethton. But then I remembered that Byron Buxton started out in the GCL too before being moved up to E-Town midway through the short-season.

Yes, I do recall Buxton in the GCL, saw him play his first game, amazing speed with a great arm but had contact issues even back then.  To me it shows caution with Royce, if he starts to rake then he'll get that bump.  Throwback, here's Byron in his first week in GCL:

Playing time.  Wander Javier is on the E-town roster.  I just cannot see those in the same team, unless Lewis moves to CF

Exactly, Munoz and Miranda are the other SS options on the GCL roster currently and Miranda has played more 3B in EXST and Munoz at 2B to let Wander play SS.  Lewis is going to get every possible rep at SS to find out if he can cut it there.  I'll try to get some video of him in the field as well as hitting when the GCL season starts up in a week.

If you can get video of throws to 1B, it would be awesome!  His 2 possible shortcomings at SS, I heard, were a. his footwork and b. his arm.

Yep not a problem, got to get the old camera fixed elsewise I would have got video of the 2018 Draft prep stars that are here in town for the PG National.  Big righty named Kumar Rocker was lightening up the guns 94-98mph, a couple of 5 tool OFs in Jerrod Kelenic and Joe Gray Jr.  With big 3B bats in Tristan Casas and Elijah Cabel as well as defensive catcher with offensive chops in Will Banfield.  The 2018 Draft is shaping up really nice on the prep front.

Geeez, that's going to be an exciting cohort to follow as they work their ways up. It would be great if they all produced and warranted promotions and sort of stayed together.
