An Upside Down World

You're the one that brought up 2+2, not me.

People have correctly pointed out the failed logic in your argument several times. I assume you don't think President Trump should be found guilty for any crime when he urged his follower to beat up protesters?  I assume you don't think Sarah Palin's "cross hair map" had any impact on Giffords shooting.  I assume you don't believe GOP rhetoric on abortion led to any abortion doctors being shot. And I suspect you don't think certain "news outlets" should be shut down because they reported an incomprehensibly stupid story about a pizza shop being a front for child sex ring.

Dayton's comments on race and policing were true. They weren't made up. Police abuses against black men is a legitimate public problem. It makes people uncomfortable because we have to acknowledge that racism is still a big factor in our society.

Outside of Trumps idiotic encouragement of violence none of the other things were remotely close to what Mark Dayton.  I could debate you you if Dayton's comments were correct, but there was a simple way fopr Dayton to deal with that opinion that day.  Keep it to himself until things calmed down, for example at least waiting until he knew the race of those involved.  In any event the killer thought he was doing the right thing killing 7 cops.  An ignorant white guy in a high place making him feel more right didn't help matters.  I get it you think I'm just saying all this in hindsight, but I wasn't I said it the moment Dayton made the comments.

Cool, good to know that's how it works when it's the left that does it.  Is being consistent to much to ask?.

Your confusing the word consistent with being objective. The left will condemn the cops who are shooting people and they will also condemn people shooting cops.

It is absolutely not something the other side will do.

Is this about the Dayton statement: "Would this have happened if those passengers, the driver were white?" he asked. "I don't think it would have."

Isn't that statistically likely? What percentage of police shooting victims are non-white, compared to the population at large? Heck, wasn't it clearly stated that Yanez stopped him in part because Castile resembled a robbery suspect?

All that idiot had to do was count to 30 and no one would have ever known. His buddy even says "is that 30?"

Correct. The casualness of all three officers tells me this is something that is completely routine.

It's sad, because I know there are good cops out there, but I'm real close to losing all respect for the police as an entire institution.

even after being recorded saying he was going to kill him....I predict bad protests.

I just don't get this ... I really don't. I mean I do, but I don't. How can any judge find this guy not guilty? I wonder if they had charged him with 2nd degree murder if that would have changed the verdict? I just don't get this.

Hard working father of two, no criminal record, no weapon, literally executed by an officer in Arizona.

Victim was crying, laying face down, begging the cop not to shoot him.

Even with the body cam footage, the officer of course was acquitted.

I'm done with these cops. They are thugs. The argument that its just a few bad apples goes out the window when they stick by the bad ones and there is no justice, ever. The cops that refuse to root out the thugs are complicit, and just as bad as the one pulling the trigger.

Such a disgusting story.

I don't know. My kids never got too into either of those shows so I can't really speak to the criticisms. According to the article, the gripes with both shows seem to stem from a social hierarchy wherein the protagonists dutifully take orders and kowtow to their superiors. From what I can tell in the article this is teaching our kids that Fascism is good.

To me, it sounds like a lesson in working in an office. When did the majority of jobs became strictly collaborative and nobody had a boss?

Also, did I miss some new parenting memo? From my experience, kids tend to do best when there is structure, a schedule and learning that actions have consequences. These can't seriously be bad things now can they?

Among the hundreds of things that make me think less of our species in that article, the author doesnt seem to understand what fascism is. She seems to equate structure with fascism. How i have no earthly idea.

This little area of the board only seems to think the right wing of politics is hurtling off the map of sanity and decency(it certainly is), but dont take your eye off the other side either.

Plenty of crazy, short sighted nonsense over there too.

Oh definitely. But in many circles the idea that you would (rightly) call that paragraph sexist would probably lead to an army of "woke" folks endeavoring to destroy you on twitter.

I do have a question for you as a fellow parent....

1. Is this tongue in cheek? I cant tell. I want to believe it is, but the same author has an article about Thomas being racist on slate. And sentiments as absurd abound in the world of "How to" guides for parenting.

So...its real right? And thus...perfect for this thread. The Apocalypse is nigh...and it aint just MAGA folks marching us there.

I got no idea, and since my kids don't watch Thomas, I'm probably more in the dark. All I can say is, anyone who thinks they know how to parent a child has absolutely no clue how to parent a child. It's about 5% dumb luck, 5% what your parents did and 90% "winging it".

And so I'm clear, my comment about a female Hitler being sexist isn't one of those "reverse sexism!" bits, I think implying that a woman dictator isn't equally as dangerous as a male dictator is completely misogynistic.

Absolutely.  I've always said that anyone who sells a book about parenting is a known fraud.  You can't write a book on parenting.

Good parenting comes down to the strengths and weaknesses of the individual parents and children.  No one way is the right way for any large swath of kids.  Just be fair and consistent, know yourself, and know your kids.  There it is - -in a couple sentences.  No book necessary.

And go ahead and let them watch Thomas or Paw Patrol.  They're cute and totally fine.  And if you read into the subtext of kids cartoons to write editorials - get over yourself.

But in all seriousness.....watch out for that sneaky **** Caillou.....

Regarding the Justine Damond investigation: The lack of progress seems to stem from the lack of cooperation, by both the shooting officer, as well as his partner.

I understand there is no way to force the shooting officer to cooperate, as he has a right to not self-incriminate.

But, couldn't they give the partner immunity, thereby eliminating any threat of self incrimination? With no threat of self incrimination, they could then compel him to cooperate, couldn't they?

At least 17 reported dead in another school shooting.

This city was voted Florida's safest city last year.

These can happen anywhere, which makes them all the more scary.

I shouldn't have to fear that next time it'll be my children's school. But, I do. It makes me sad and angry that i have to fear this when I send my kids to school everyday.

I hope that eventually, we will find a way to work together to stop this nonsense, but I fear were never will.

I've already broken on this issue. I'm way past being broken. These parents should sue the United States government for not protecting their kids. I don't care if they win or lose, but something has to change. If this ever happens to my kids, I will lose my mind.

Yep, that's how I feel. I lost all hope after Sandy Hook. **** the NRA.

I noticed someone who is supposed to be a leader to the nation spoke for about seven minutes today and did not even mention guns.   You are already hearing the GOP reps hemming and hawing about not acting without all the facts or it being too soon.

I noticed they never even did manage to pass the gun bump legislation after the Vegas massacre.  It is sickening what some people are able to over look when they receive some NRA blood money.

Yup.  The only thing that might get done over this is to put a bunch of armed people into schools.

And that will do jack squat.  I shouldn't have to fear for the kids I take care of every year that we might get interrupted from word problems by a nut with an automatic weapon.  It's ridiculous.  But if a classroom of dead 6 year olds doesn't move the needle, I shudder to think what will.

Funny how it's not too soon when an immigrant here illegally is accused of killing an NFL player and an Uber driver in a drunken driving crash. Then, it's important to jump right to the one and only solution: "build that wall, yesterday".

The difference is that you don't hear many from the left saying "too soon". Indeed they're eager to talk about the issue too.

My Facebook feed makes me irate. I haven't got into any arguments yet, but I've been biting my tongue.

One friend posted an ignorant meme about how not disciplining kids has led to a rise in crime... This kid's patents were dead, and a family took him in and tried to raise him.

Plenty are pointing out mental health plays a major factor in these things.... obviously.

And some, are trying to equate an ar 15 to a 22 used for hunting, or even a 223 used for hunting.

It is going to take years to change people Being purposefully belligerent.
