Not to nitpick or anything, well, okay, I'm going to nitpick but that at bat where Kepler struck out, it looked to me like Kepler thought he had to swing at anything low and away after that first called "strike."

In Germany... Low and Away is Austria.

I got that shower curtain changed. Damn near a 7 minute job. And I forgot my towel. Walk of shame across the bathroom,

You did the right thing by testing it yourself. It's not right to let someone else assume all the risk with experimental tub modifications.

Well.... he DID manage to walk Eddie Rosario

Yeah, if he wants to generate plus offense for a corner outfielder, Eddie's going to have to stop running into the stands to hack at pitches out of the zone.

Former Twins stalwart Brian Harper managed to be a productive hitter despite walking only 15-25 times per year, but he had the luxury of a somewhat greater ability to make contact...

Saturday morning rugby training session in the rain-- just checking in. Whoa, Nelly! I thought this next cpl weeks would be the last we see of 1st place, and maybe even .500-- how I want to be wrong! (First time for everything, I guess!) But 7 games with Cleveland, then going to Beantown for 4, with only a short breath of air against the white sox... Tall order there. And, sadly, no way to bank any of those 20-something runs, which we seem to need on a regular basis now...

Unless you suffered a broken bone that you didn't mention, you were almost certainly having a better time there than we were watching the Twins.

On the bright side, MLB rules prevent the Indians from donning their "Central Division Leaders" t-shirts for at least another day.

I like your new avatar and tagline. I played way too many hours of that game.

And it's been a somewhat somber game thread, HK.  We got the tragic news of the passing of 70's singing sensation Nicollette Larson... in 1997 (for the love of God, don't ask).  Someone suggested that Turley getting consecutive outs after getting behind the Indians 4-0 might constitute being on a roll, milliseconds before he gave up 4 more.

And there's been a lively debate about whether Hughes should be publicly flogged, taken out behind the barn and shot, or, worst of all, sent to the bullpen.

Me too. It's also one of the games that got me interested in programming in jr. high. Kobayashi Mar'ed the code to make it more winnable, and then got a one week computer lab time out for... altering some of the text messages in the game.

Edit:  Aggies asked me to return my avatar to the Buttermaker pic, and as an important member of the game thread tribe, his words have medicine, but I'm holding out for him explaining why before I change it back. Also, he informs us that he successfully installed and tested a shower curtain during the game, and the TD consensus is that it probably looks smashing.

Oh, my goodness, I'd forgotten all about the Rhumba Girl.  She had one of the most angelic voices of all time, and that long, lovely hair.....  be still my heart.   But... but... why news of her today, of all days?  Gonna take a lotta  something to figure that one out.

Thanks for the reminder, though, think I'll dig up some old Neil Young today, whom she sang with many times, and let that ease me through this rainy saturday.

Amazing. I really wish I had done/been able to do that. The nuns would have had a heart attack. Although Sister Edward Francis was already like 146 years old, so I'm not sure anything would have really killed her at that point.

Waaay back in my day, you didn't have to be Morpheus or Neo or even Matthew Broderick in Wargames to do those things like you do now. The version I played was on the Apple II and written in BASIC. Just stopped the game, listed the code, changed some of the text and then left it running, without saving the vandalized version onto the trusty 5.25" game diskette. Someone from the next period played it and helpfully tattled on me, but it was worth it. And I'm glad to hear that Sister Francis didn't have The Big One on your watch.

I know this is nitpicking the shellacking, but I feel like the ump did a lousy job. Seemed like he gave Carrasco several extra strikes (Kepler should have had a 3-1 count in the second instead of 2-2, Polanco should have had a walk), while Turley was given no calls at all.

When Turley couldn't find the handle on his curveball (Kipnis leaned into the 0-2 curveball in the first), he came out throwing nothing but fastballs in the second and the Indians were very aware that that was what was coming. His fastball has very little movement.

Edit: I looked up the game log on Brooks. Carrasco had 6 balls out of the strike zone called strikes, and zero balls in the strike zone called balls.

Turley had 5 balls out of the strike zone called strikes, and 4 balls in the strike zone called balls.

That's 5% of Carrasco's pitches called wrong, and that's 12% of Turley's pitches called wrong.
