Article: Twins Draft Blayne Enlow, Seven More

Recommended Posts

Of course there's some risk, but if you know you have to offer what other teams don't... and the agent repeats those demands to other teams... not a whole lot of risk.

I'm sure no one expected Carlson to go to Seattle.....let's just hope these guys are good, they need some good players.

I knew they liked him. An executive with the Mariners told me that they really wanted him, but that they prefer going with college bats in the first round. When he was available in the second when they picked I knew they would take him.

Charlie Barnes LHP Clemson

From Sumter, S.C, Barnes stayed in his home state, as did his younger brother, James, who is a redshirt freshman quaterback on the national championship Clemson football team. A 6-foot, 175-pound lefthander, Barnes pitched primarily out of the bullpen his freshman year before moving into the weekend rotation as a sophomore, where he went 6-4 and posted a 4.66 ERA. In the fall, Barnes received plenty of draft buzz from area scouts who saw him touch the low-90s and maintain his velocity deeper into outings. That improved velocity didn't transfer over to the spring, though, as Barnes has pitched mostly around 87-88 mph and occasionally brushed 90. While not overpowering, Barnes pitched to a 5-4, 2.73 record with a 109 strikeouts to 21 walks in 95.2 innings. Barnes is able to paint the corners and keep the ball low in the zone while turning over a plus, mid-70s changeup as his main out pitch. He mixes in an average upper-70s curveball and a short, tight low-80s slider for a full four-pitch mix. Matched up against premium ACC aces like J.B. Bukauskas and Brendan McKay, Barnes more than held his own due to his command, competitiveness and pitchability. He projects as a fairly safe back-of-the-rotation starter.

Andrew Bechtold

Bechtold batted just .218 as a redshirt freshman at Maryland in 2016. He transferred to Chipola and took off under the tutelage of head coach Jeff Johnson. Bechtold is a righthanded hitter capable of generating plus bat speed with a compact swing path. He’s able to drive the ball to all fields and he has grown into more power this spring. Bechtold got off to a hot start to the season and put up excellent numbers for Chipola, batting .421/.535/.683 and hitting 11 home runs. Most scouts project him to develop an average bat with plus power, though his limited track record creates some uncertainty. Bechtold is an above-average runner, has plenty of arm strength for the left side and scouts believe he can stick at third base.

Eric A Longenhagen

2:30 Twins take Chipola 3B Andrew Bechtold. Above average bat speed, could be bat-first utility guy.

I've seen some scouting reports saying he was one of the top JC players this year. Can't recall where I saw it though. Maybe minorleagueball? Either way, may be an overslot guy. Has a commitment to LSU next year.

You need to start an Adopt-A-Prospect page on him! You seem to be 'in the know' with good info. (If interested PM me and ask me how.)

:)

Let's let them talk him out of his LSU commitment before we take that step. We're all very sensitive right now and I'm not sure we could take it.

This is such a terrible draft. The one thing people can agree on is don't draft for need, take the best player available. But the Twins are too busy playing games, trying to look smart by getting a round 4 guy in the tenth round, or whatever else they are trying to do.

Just pick the best guy available and quit messing around.

There are lots of "premature" jokes to be made here, but this is a family site.

That is probably exactly what they are doing, according to their list at least.
