Article: Twins Daily Official MLB Draft Day 1

Recommended Posts

I didn't want Leach at 37, but didn't want Carlson or Canning either.

I really don't like saving money for 4th round talent that falls to the 10th or whatever the plan is. I don't get excited about 4th round talent.

There are still a lot of prep pitchers I like though. And by "like" I mean they have nice bios and profile pics; I got little to go on personally

Well, I'm glad you're happy b/c you probably know more than I do. But why pass on Carlson or Canning? Or Enlow? I mean, Leach seems like a third rounder (although I like that he's Canadian and only 17) so why not take him in the 3rd round and use our picks for higher guys?  We'll see how this plays out tomorrow but I'm concerned.

Carlson would have been nice but it would have cost pretty much all their savings from the Lewis pick. Canning's got health issues. Dunno about Enlon. I mean they didn't take the 500th ranked prospect, they took the 101st. And obviously its not going to be the same board anyways.

They have the spending power going into day two to do some things. I think they're going for and getting good value to stay flexible and sign everyone they draft, which should be priority one IMO.

I think the only way to reconcile is that they put the cart before the horse and the guys they hoped would be there weren't - just like some here cautioned with the save $ strategy.

But none of the picks ahead of them were surprising at all, and Carlson actually fell. They presumably already knew what his bonus demands were. I don't see what scenario was torpedoed here . . . there are still plenty of guys they can go over-slot on, but Radcliff's quote is just bizarre given what happened.

Guys I figured it out. Twins have decided to underslot the entire draft and use the remaining funds on their last pick for Tom Pohlad, coincidentally Carl Pohlad's grandson. It will make a great down payment on his new $7.2M Lake Minnetonka home

I think in retrospect the "boom" meant Rooker's bat. Which produced a 1.318 OPS in the SEC.

He's a good bet to win the Golden Spikes award.

Why is that bad that Carlson would cost their whole savings? Isn't that kind of the point of saving the money in the first place? To get another top 15 pick?

Saving money to get a few better spots in the middle rounds is virtually pointless, IMO. Those guys are all super long shots to ever play a single game in MLB.

The 101st prospect at 37 is quite a huge reach, especially with the 15th ranked still on the board.

The great thing about sports is we always eventually get a result. Eventually we'll see how these picks work out.

He was #50 on MLB pipeline and will probably sign underslot. They didn't need to save money at 1 to get Rooker.

The MLB board isn't the be all end all. After the first 20-25 picks it becomes a pretty rough prospect guide.

Have you been watching all these players taken today, and seen how many of them were previously drafted? There is a ton of talent that goes unsigned every year. If the Twins sign everyone they draft that is a huge win. High schoolers in the mid-late rounds can be very touch to sign so having the spending power will be big.

I like Carlson too but taking him would be putting first round eggs in one pitching basket which is a huge risk. Instead, with the savings they can spread the risk around a dozen or more arms if they want to. High beta guys. There's going to be plenty of ceiling there too. But there's no ceiling if they don't sign.

So, they drafted three guys ahead of their consensus rankings. Using the same scouts that drafted Stewart and Jay. To save money for what, exactly?

Stewart and Jay weren't drafted ahead of their consensus rankings.

You can't have it both ways. The Twins have had a lot of failures on "consensus" picks.

And until the draft is over, it's obviously impossible to answer that question. If they leave a bunch of money unspent, I will be very displeased, and so I think will everyone on here. But it hasn't happened.
