Article: Game Thread: Twins @ Giants, June 9@9:15pm CT

Recommended Posts

Anybody tired of the West Coast? Hang in there… just one more game played in the middle of the night, just 3 more games to go total, then back to Minnesota. Until then… inter-league action with a weekend series against the Giants. When a National League team is hosting, the pitchers will have to bat, which will be a welcome change from having our batters pitch. It’s frustrating when Chris Gimenez has thrown so much that he is now qualified for the ERA title.

When pitchers bat, buntings follow.

Here are some things to think about:

1. San Francisco – 870,000 people are crammed into 7 city blocks and this makes San Francisco the 2nd most dense city in the United States… after New York City. The reason for this denseness, San Francisco is built on a peninsula which reduces the opportunity to sprawl outward from the city in all directions. Also, the hippie counter-culture continued marijuana use that makes you explain things to them over and over without eventual understanding. San Francisco generates billions of dollars in revenue from tourism. People come from everywhere to see the Golden Gate Bridge and they leave San Francisco confirming that it is indeed a bridge and it is red. They visit Lombard Street and they leave with confirmation of it being paved and unnecessarily curvy. They visit Alcatraz and leave with confirmation that it contains a prison and a strong opinion that Nicolas Cage should be locked up there and never heard from again.

2. Our Twins – Hats off to Kyle Gibson. Last night had to feel good and he probably needed to feel good. Miguel Sano must also be feeling good. (Sano BTW… needs a unique clever nickname). Sano is hot again and he is beginning to look like one of the best hitters in the league. He is getting noticed by the ballot box stuffers because he took over the All-Star voting lead at 3B this week… surpassing Manny Machado. Minnesota is required by federal law to have at least one all-star representative at the All-Star game, but this year… it looks like a Twin might play significant minutes and have a legitimate shot at driving away in the vehicle awarded to the MVP. I always feel good when deserving baseball players win new automobiles because I know that adding an extra car to the 4 or 5 that they already own comes in handy.

3. The Giants – This team has big expectations every year but so far this year… those expectations have not been met… not even close really. The Giants currently have the third worst record in baseball. They blew the off-season budget on a closer and never really addressed LF. The bullpen has given up leads and the starting rotation has underperformed with someone named Ty Blach leading the staff. In hindsight, the Giants front office realizes that they should have addressed LF and they feel they made a mistake letting Madison Bumgarner enter games on a dirt bike.

4. Today’s Joe M Conversation
Mauer: That was good… compliments to the chef.

Maddon: Thank You… I like cooking when I get the chance. There are so many things you can do with pasta. It gives me a chance to be creative.

McCarthy: I am full… Fulll… with a capital F and an extra L.

Montana: I’m still hungry… do you have anything to snack on?

Mauer: How is that possible? How can you still be hungry? You had more of that pasta than any of us did and we may not eat again until November?

Montana: I had a bunch of Antipasti before I came. It must have evened out.

5. Greek - A friend of mine named Kostas is originally from Greece and he is very intelligent. He was trying to explain to me neuroscience... I’m not sure why since I started the conversation by mentioning that I had two different color socks on. Anyway, to fully understand neuroscience, it requires knowledge of engineering, mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science, medicine, philosophy and psychology. He must have talked about 30 minutes straight on the subject before he finally nodded in my direction for a response. I was completely lost during the conversation so I said that it was all Greek to me. He didn't understand that.

I think Montana is onto something there.  I'm going to have to give that one a try.  My waistline thanks you.

I, for one, am tired of the west coast games.  Because i'm too easily hooked I end up staying up all night watching the game instead of going to bed.  My protocol for late games of any sport is simply not to watch.  It sucks.  Sleep has to take precedent on a "school" night though.

I was completely lost during the conversation so I said that it was all Greek to me. He didn't understand that.

In college we had students from all over the place, so when a Professor in one of my classes said as an aside, "it's all Greek to me," probably because he had written some math symbols that were squiggly Greek and he didn't actually know what he was writing, he paused and put Nick, our token Greek guy, on the spot and asked what people back home said in that situation. The reply was "it's all Chinese to me". Well, we had no shortage of Chinese guys in the classroom, so we asked them. "It's all Russian to me," was their response in unison. I guess my school wasn't hot stuff, because we didn't actually have a Russian, or maybe it was the quaint custom in those days to not invite our adversaries to learn secrets along with our students. But I bet they had some other language to blame, and so on, and so on, and eventually it would have circled back to "it's all English to me" if we had kept at it.

Blasphemy!

I would like to se the game threads stay unlocked longer for west coast games.  I went to bed before I refreshed and saw the chicken photo Chief posted, which was grilled chicken and vaguely healthy looking. (It looked pretty good, but still grilled and healthy)  You'd think we had lost and there is a 6:00 a.m. practice scheduled as a result.

Tonight we want fried chicken.  Nothing healthy, just a mountain of battered, deep fried, extra-crispy dead chicken flesh. That's if our bullpen will allow it, of course.

I live on the West coast I and am tired of the Twins playing out here. Of course, the fact I'm up at 4:30 am PT might have something to do with it...

Try being in the Twins'/Gods' Territory and having to get up by 5 AM ....I have yet to hear an end of the games and some of their beginnings ...................................Live on the West coast???? Says a lot   ;)

gil4 Johnson is right! Keep the West Coast game threads unlocked longer. My comment about last night's game has to be posted today. Here goes: "The juggernaut of Gibson, Belisle, Rogers, and Kintzler looked every bit Major League last night. Now, later, rinse, repeat for 100 more games." That is all.

I agree 100%. There is nothing better than Twins games starting at 5:00 PT (or 4:00 from the East) and finishing before my (early) bedtime.

I get into routines and find it hard to break them. A couple of years ago I lived in Europe during much of the English football season. I was so used to watching my favorite team at 7am Pacific time that it was really difficult to watch in the afternoon, which is the "normal" time.

For all you complainers, I live in Maine. Last night's game started at 10:10 and the last pitch was around 1:05AM (I think). It was pretty dificult getting out of bed this morning - although it was almost 10:00. Did I forget to mention that I'm retired? HeeHee.

I'm in Santa Fe on Mountain time.  I love my Saturday morning Liverpool games.  Can't imagine getting up at 4:30 am for the early game, though.

I definitely enjoy having baseball games at reasonable times, so I don't have to stay up past midnight!  And on the weekends, games start in the morning.

I'm right there with you.  I'll try to stay up now and then on weekends, but I won't try during the week.

2.5 years from retirement for me. Not that I'm counting or anything.

Some call it "God's Territory" others might attach "forsaken."

I think that sort of falls under the CBU rubric.

Wait, you mean students way back then actually had a sense of humor?

If I could do it any other way... I'd leave those late game threads up longer. Unfortunately... I can't. I only have a small window in the morning to post the new open.

Once I'm at work... it's nose to the grindstone. So that means a choice of posting at 7AM or when I'm done from work around 6PM.

Yes I do get a lunch break but there are days when I have to cancel it for various reasons and I never know when that will happen in advance.

That leaves the only safe window to post the new thread in the morning.

My apologies and my hope for forgiveness and understanding.

We're Twins fans, so, forbearance is sort of built into our DNA.
