Article: We Can Rebuild It: Creative Bullpen Fixes

Recommended Posts

I am in the camp with the folks who don't think we can seriously compete this year. With that in mind, I think we should be using these innings to evaluate the assets within the organization who are ready, or near ready so desicions can be made on them. To me having Wheeler gone is fine, it opens up a spot for someone to move up.

At the moment I am hoping that beyond evaluating the current talent in the system that the front office is evaluating the evaluators and developing a new system wide approach to player development, especially on the pitching side. They need to find a way to bring in better talent, develop them faster, and keep them healthier.

By giving young arms the opportunity this year, and seeing what we have, they can better move into a strong competitive position for next year. They should take every phone call inquiring about trades but stick to there guns and only make trades that will help out sooner unless it's for a player who doesn't fit into the near term plan. I'm hoping that by the trade deadline the whole roster has a little different feel and that they have some near term if not immediate pitching help.

Kintzler has an attack the strike zone attitude. I think his attitude is perfect for a closer and I wouldn't remove him from that role.

Yeah, he has been solid in the role overall, he's the last person I'm worried about with this pen.

What is the prognosis for Trevor May next year? Will he be recovered, is he being looked at to take over a rotation spot?? Just curious. Also, I don't see anything wrong with snatching up Dyson or Broxton just to see what they could do??

He will be back.

He certainly should be in the mix for a starting rotation gig

I understand that.

But... if the team is still in first place or reasonably nearby first place or wild card.

I'd wait until the off season to make that trade.

Yeah you can't "sell" if they are still in the hunt.

However pitchers like Santana are worth a lot more at the deadline then in the off season. Especially this off season where their is a lot of good FA pitchers.

Which in fact HURTS Santana's trade value at the deadline as well.

Guess the best thing to do is have the twins win "the whole ****ing thing" as Tom berringer once famously said!

Apologies if this has been discussed in this thread or another. Per MLBTR : "relievers Bobby Parnell and Ernesto Frieri.  The two right-handers recently opted out of minor league deals (Parnell with the Royals, Frieri with the Yankees)" Obvious 25 and 40 man issues apply, but should the Twins show any interest in either of these un-sexy names?

FWIW, Dyson seems broken to me.

Couple of points:

Rotation: Unless the Twins just fall out of it, Santana is needed and I'd look forward to keeping him next season as well. I just don't believe the wheels are ready to fall off yet. You have real money to spend next off season on one high quality FA. Berrios and Mejia are stuck with for the rest of the season. They are young, talented, and part of today and tomorrow. For now, Gibson and Hughes are your 5th SP options. You could,,,and the Twins have previously...do worse. By the second half, you could legitimately look to Slegers or Gonsalvez. It was even reported the Twins would consider Gonsalvez straight from AA if he looked ready. Keep Romero starting, for goodness sake! (Though IP could see him finish in a pen).

Bullpen: The more immediate concern, obviously. IMO only, May wasn't written off, but it was a "show me" month for a few guys. Which is why a few guys are no longer with the team. June is the month when changes start being made. And while they may be great or likeable changes, we ARE seeing roster moves and rolling changes.

Wimmers? Good milb season last season, OK September, solid ST..."show me or you're gone."

We ALL want Hilgenberger, Reed, Chargois, Melotakis, Curtiss, Jay and Rosario. But look at reality for a moment and put yourself in the soft comfy chairs of Falvey and Levine. Chargois, Reed and Jay have been hurt. Melotakis had a great April but has slumped a bit lately. Hilgenberger was hurt at the end of last season and is at AAA for the first time. Curtiss and Rosario are at AA for the first time.

Again, IMO, the FO is looking to mid season to A) Get a couple guys healthy and pitching well for a possible ML promotion, and B) look at the AS guys ready for a AAA promotion which could lead to a ML promotion at some point.

In the meantime, as they are doing now, with the exception of Rosario, they are rolling through arms for auditions to see who can help today, or tomorrow, and who needs to go. It may not be happening exactly the way we want, or as quickly as we want, but you can see the wheels turning if you look.

The Rosario promotion alone shows they are not afraid, just, biding their time and looking at all factors and all possibilities.

Are there other teams interested in Dyson? Rangers won't get much in return. I would guess they would move him to a team that isn't going to compete with them for the wild card. NL clubs or a team that is off to a poor start might the direction. The last thing the Rangers need is for Dyson to pitch well for a team competing for the wild card.

With a fall off like Dyson has seen, I would suspect an undiagnosed injury. Buyer beware.

I'm not quite sure what it would be without watching the guy in person... The velocity is still there. For some reason he's not getting any strikeouts and walking a boat load of people in 16 innings.

From less than hit per inning to almost 2 per. From about 8 k per 9 to 3 per 9. From 3 BB per 9 to 7. From 1 HR per 12 IP to 1 every 3 IP. I can't think of anyone going that bad that sudden without being hurt. Even someone tipping pitches wouldn't go that bad. Velocity isn't always a tell. Accuracy and movement would be better indicators. Obviously, you need eyes on the guy to see it.

Last offseason.

But I would guess Pressly is coming back.

Pressly has pitched two games in AAA. He needs a lot more time than that.

This is the perfect opportunity to call up Hildenberger or Busenitz. Both have pitched superb all season long in AAA, and I'm still mystified how these other guys have gotten promotions ahead of them. Time to call at least one of them up.

Busenitz is the other option.

I would guess Hildenberger only comes up if they cut Boshers or Breslow.

Well we had to get our weekly bullpen blow up in... I think the next weapon of mass destruction will be called the Belisle/Breslow project. Sure to wreak havoc when it blows up.

Hopefully like most WMD's, the owners have them stores away in a secret location but never really intend to use them.... Twins have yet to realize this.

Why would they cut Boshers? His 2.00 ERA not good enough?

I don't think they will. Breslow might not be long for the squad though. And there is not really room for Hildenberger until one of them is gone, that's all I was saying.
