Article: Twins Minor League Report (5/7): Berrios On The Brink

Recommended Posts

We'll have to disagree I guess on how much evaluation can be done in ST.
What was the evaluation of what Gibson was going to look like this year based on ST?

Ok, theoretically someone could take a flyer on Stewart. But right now that would be crazy.
And even in the small chance someone does, the odds that you don't get him returned is tiny.

Put it this way, would you want the Twins to take a rule v flier on Tyler Kolek under similar circumstances?

But we probably have a few months before we have to worry about this.

Probably not, but maybe.

I view them a bit different though.

I don't think Kolek has enough track record yet to show if he's a complete bust or not.

To me, Stewart is a total bust, nothing there.

But, you might be right, because it only takes one team to think there might be something there.

So, I guess the bigger point to me is not if he'd be taken, but would I care? I wouldn't.

I feel the complete opposite as you Mike.
I view Stewart as a complete bust at this point. I think, barring an epic improvement this year, there is almost no chance he's added to the 40 man.
I don't see how any team could even remotely consider carrying him I their 25 man roster all season, in his current state.

Fair. And, I've been open to re-thinking my position, based on the list of pitchers supplied above.

I know that if he was a FA, and my team sucked, I would be thrilled to carry him on the 25 man roster for a year as a RP. Thrilled.

I guess I'm just not seeing whatever you are seeing that you'd want him on a MLB team at this point.

I know he had some good ERA's in the past, but I just don't think they mean much with such pathetic k rates.

I'm seeing a former top 5 pick, that has struggled in one of the worst systems at developing pitchers in some time.....that's the kind of guy you take a flyer on, not the types MN has done the last few years, bringing in mediocre guys without pedigrees.

Good point.

The Twins may not be saying anything publicly, but their actions sure indicate that Berrios will start Saturday.  Duffey threw 15 pitches Sunday and 18 yesterday.  Not going to be him.

Haley looked awful Sunday.  I'm almost surprised he didn't land back on the DL - perhaps he still will.  No way is it him IMO.

Gibson will not have been down for ten days by Saturday.  Can't be him.

Hurlbut pitches tonight.  Won't be him.

Wheeler, Slegers and Turley all pitched Monday.  Wheeler pitched poorly.  And if the plan was to bring up Slegers or Turley, they would logically have pitched longer than they did on Monday.

That leaves Mejia and Berrios as realistic choices.  Mejia, who pitched poorly in his last outing, would be slated to start tomorrow.  If he does, that pretty much makes it official.

I think it's late June, without looking it up again.

At this point, that is only about 5 or 6 weeks away.

given his service time last year? I would be surprised if it was June.

but, hey, what's 6-8 more starts to the Twins, when you have Tepesch and Wilk, right?
