Article: Twins Minor League Report (4/26): Wells Does Well... Again

Recommended Posts

The Twins were working in Arlington, Texas, on Wednesday night. Chattanooga had a morning start while Rochester began in the early afternoon. Ft. Myers had a game to forget, and the Kernels stayed over .500 with an all-around strong game. The pitching wasn’t as good in the system as it was a day earlier, but there was one very strong start, and another starter gave up his first earned run of the season and gave a quality start. Ehire Adrianza is looking to earn a big league roster spot with his strong rehab performance. And… so much more. It was a full day of baseball in the Minnesota Twins minor league system. So, grab a cup of coffee, or a big glass of water and enjoy…

RED WINGS REPORT

Rochester 2, Gwinnett 3

Box Score

Lefty David Hurlbut came into his third start having given up zero earned runs through 11 innings pitched. In the first inning, an unearned run was charged to him due to a passed ball. However, his streak of unearned runs came to an end when he gave up two runs in the third inning. Nevertheless, he put together a quality start on Wednesday afternoon. He gave up those three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk in 6.1 innings. He struck out three. His season ERA, now through 17.1 innings, is at 1.04.

Drew Rucinski got the final two outs of the seventh and pitched a scoreless eighth frame as well. Alex Wimmers struck out one in a perfect ninth.

Ehire Adrianza had two hits for the second straight game. He is now 4-9 in his two-game rehab stint. John Ryan Murphy added his second and third doubles in four at-bats. Tommy Field hit his fourth double.

CHATTANOOGA CHATTER

Chattanooga 4, Tennessee 8

Box Score

It just wasn’t Felix Jorge’s day on Wednesday afternoon. The talented right-hander gave up six runs on ten hits and a walk in his five innings. He struck out four. Ryan Eades came on and gave up two runs on two hits and two walks… in two innings. He struck out… two.

Mason Melotakis pitched another scoreless inning in relief ,and Nick Burdi struck out two batters in a scoreless ninth inning. Both keep their ERAs of 0.00 intact. Melotakis has thrown 8.2 innings, and Burdi has tossed 7.1 innings so far.

Travis Harrison led the offense. He went 2-2 with two walks in the game. Down 4-1 in the fourth, Jonathan Rodriguez hit a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 4-3.

However, this was the Jason Vosler story. The Cubs’ 16th round pick in 2014 out of Northeastern came into the game hitting .180 with one home runs. He went 3-5 and hit three, two-run homers. The first gave the Smokies a 4-1 lead in the third. In his next at bat, he hit a two-run homer to give the Smokies another three-run lead after Rodriguez’s homer. Then in the seventh inning, he hit his third of the game to give the final 8-4 margin.

MIRACLE MATTERS

Ft. Myers 1, Bradenton 16

Box Score

This is a game to forget. Doug Mientkiewicz, his coaching staff, and the players would all like to just completely forget about their game on Wednesday night. Sure, the box score will be there, but the goal will be to try to forget it ever happened, though they’ll want to learn from it still.

Cody Stashak started and gave up seven runs (five earned) on five hits and a walk. He struck out four. Mike Theofanopoulos came on and recorded just two outs. He was charged with six runs on five hits and a walk. Brady Anderson came on and gave up three runs on six hits, but he was able to get the game to the ninth inning. Jonny Drozd came on and pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Miracle, who have been scoring a lot of runs of late, were held to just four hits and two runs in the game. Zander Wiel had an RBI double in the game.

KERNELS NUGGETS

Cedar Rapids 6, Burlington 1

Box Score

The Kernels used a five-run second inning to grab an early lead and got a strong pitching performance to improve to 11-9.

In that second inning, Shane Carrier drove in the first run with an RBI double. Then the red-hot Jermaine Palacios came up with the bases loaded and cleared them with a triple. The next batter, Mitchell Kranson, bounced a single to the outfield to score Palacios.

Lewin Diaz led the way with a 3-4 game. He added his seventh double. Kranson went 2-4. Travis Blankenhorn went 1-2 and walked twice in the game.

Tyler Wells pitched well on improved to 2-0 on the season. The right-hander gave up one run on five hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out seven, dropping his season ERA to 1.88. Max Cordy and Colton Davis worked the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, without giving up a run.

Palacios tripled for the third straight game, and it was his fifth triple of this young season.

How much longer can Adrianza be on rehab assignment? What will the Twins do with him at that time? If everyone's still healthy, they don't really have a strong need for him with the big club. As much as TD'ers would like to see DanSan off the roster, Adrianza isn't really his replacement since he doesn't play OF.

How is Palacios not on a top prospect list?  I forget if he was on the TD top lists but he is not even in top 30 on MLB list.  I get he had a bad year last year, but he was 19 at low A, that is young for the league on average, other than that he has put up big numbers at every level.

Sure it is SSS so far this year, but if he continues this for another couple weeks I bet he moves to high A.  His bb to K rate little low for a non power guy, but still think he should be in the top 30 at least.

A .567 OPS in 260ish at bats which ended in an injury will do that to you.  :)

That said, this is looking like the 2015 version of Palacios, which if true will put him in the top 10 pretty easily.

With the recent implosion of relief pitchers on the Twins it is time for Melotokis and Burdi to be up. We have four relief pitchers with eras over 5 including Pressly at 9.  Relief pitchers should have lower eras than starters.  They are short stints, if there are men on base the previous pitcher gets charged.  This is a seriously flawed pen and now that we basically have one month in we should try something new.

After starting 5 - 1 we have gone 5 - 10, this is not a good team and we need to develop our talent.  Last month fangraphs rated our bullpen #27 http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2017-positional-power-rankings-bullpen-16-30/

And they had Pressly and Belisle with good years last year listed to be contributing 0.9 WAR to what they expected to be a total bullpen WAR of 2.  That does not look like a good prognostication at this point.

This is not to say that some might not get turned around, but if we have players who might succeed rather than just compete I want them on the MLB team.

Replying to my own post because I see that Adrianza is playing LF today. First career start in the OF according to @joshwhetzel

Hitters can rehab for 20 days (or games... I'm not certain which)... today is game 5.

... decided to stop being lazy (well maybe actually start being lazier) and look it up. I believe it is 20 days. It looks like his rehab assignment will be up around May 11th (I don't know exactly). Will be interesting to see how much time in the OF he gets.

Tyler Wells is sure improving off of last year for sure. After 4 starts his ERA is down to 1.88 and has 32 k's in 24 innings. If he keeps this up he very well might be in Ft Myers by June (provided some of Ft Myers staff is promotable to Chattanooga). I still think Del Rosario is the first Cedar Rapids pitcher to be promoted, but if Wells keeps this up I don't see how he could stay in A ball for a whole season.

It was 46 degrees, a cold wind and sprinkles, and in general a crappy night that is risky for any pitcher to be throwing in.

Mike is right total sarcasm.  I have been following Wells since last year when he started K'ing guys at a high rate.  His trend seems to be that he K's more than one batter per inning so I thought I would comment on that.

Your description of the night gives me context I didn't have so just makes what he did even more impressive than I realized.

anyone know how fast Wells throws?  Genuinely curious here.  Those K rates are impressive.  He's pretty much league average in terms of his age, but could see himself a bump to high A at some point this year if he keeps it up.

I find it interesting that he's pitched better in the pros than he did in college. I expect that to an extent in rookie ball, but I wouldn't expect that in A ball.
