The Twins traveled south to Texas to start a three-game series with the Rangers.

 

Congrats to Jermaine Palacios who was named Midwest League Player of the Week. This came on the heels of hitting .516 with lots of extra-base hits and flashes of home run power.

 

The Twins made a transaction, purchasing the contract of P Nick Tepesch, optioning P Buddy Boshers and placing P Ryan O’Rourke on the 60-day disabled list.RED WINGS REPORT

Rochester - OFF DAY

 

The Red Wings open a set at home against Gwinnett on Tuesday. Rochester is 8-7.

 

CHATTANOOGA CHATTER

Houston, we have a problem.

 

It’s Kohl Stewart. Stewart dropped to 0-4 and his ERA inflated to 6.46. More alarming than those numbers, though, is what is causing them to pile up: Walks (four tonight) and wild pitches (also four tonight!). Stewart made it through only three innings and struck out five (which is an improvement) but struggled to find the strike zone. Of his 79 pitches, only 43 were strikes. He gave up five hits and four runs. At some point - probably soon - the organization needs to consider the DL with “left knee tendinitis” or heading back to Fort Myers (probably to pitch in extended spring games). Because, right now, this Chattanooga thing isn’t working for the young quarterback.

 

Randy Rosario gave up a run on three hits in three innings. Luke Bard gave up two runs on one hit and two walks. He struck out two. Both relievers were touched up for longballs.

 

Nick Gordon paced the offense with two hits, including a double. Jonathan Rodriguez also doubled and drove in two runs. Even though seven regulars got hits, it was much too little, too late.

 

Chattanooga 5, Tennessee 0 (7 innings; Game 2)

Matt Tracy struck out five in six shutout innings. He allowed three hits and three walks. Mason Melotakis preserved the shutout with a scoreless inning of his own.

 

There wasn’t a lot of offense in this game either, but well-timed hits opened up the scoring. Dan Gamache had a two-run single and Ryan Walker followed with a three-run single. A five-run fourth inning was all the Lookouts needed.

 

Gamache was the only multi-hit player in the lineup. LaMonte Wade stole his second base of the season.

 

The Lookouts are 9-8.

 

MIRACLE MATTERS

Fort Myers - OFF DAY

 

Fort Myers will be back in action on Tuesday. They are 8-10 on the season.

Cedar Rapids 0, Burlington 8

Not pretty in Cedar Rapids on Monday.

 

Tyler Beardsley made the start and was knocked out without recording an out in the sixth inning. He was charged with seven runs (six earned) on nine hits. He struck out three and gave up a solo home run. Quin Grogan got four outs in his Kernels debut. Though he was not charged with giving up any runs, he allowed four hits and a walk and both runners he inherited scored. Tom Hackimer recorded two outs before turning the game over to Logan Lombada. He gave up a run and struck out three. Colton Davis finished the game with two strikeouts in a scoreless inning.

 

Palacios and Jaylin Davis both led off innings with triples, but failed to cross the plate. Aaron Whitefield recorded the third hit, but was picked off first base. Travis Blankenhorn singled.

 

Blankenhorn (third base), Caleb Hamilton (catcher) and Jaylin Davis (right field) all committed errors.

 

Cedar Rapids drops to 9-9.

In reality, Stewart's troubles at the start of this season have had little (or nothing) to do with his low strikeout numbers in the past. It's clear from his starts that he just isn't throwing strikes and isn't commanding his pitches as he has in the past. Hopefully he can regain his control soon because the stuff is still really good.

I wonder if Stewart is working on some new things that was handed down from the FO.  His drop in control calls into question him working on new pitches or new arm angles things like that.  The increase in walks suggests he may be working on trying to get more strikeouts by pitching out of the zone as well.  Overall, this will take adjustment, if this is what the FO is trying to get him to do, if not then he is in trouble as a prospect, which sucks as a high draft pick.

I suppose I can't relate how Stewart has great stuff. He's never struck many out, and now can't find the strike zone. I mean, I know the guys still youngish, but he smells an awful lot like a bust. How do you salvage a guy like this?

A former Twins prospect went that route as well. Dave Shinskie spent a year as the Boston College starting QB

 

I don't want to talk about Stewart. 

 

So, when my daughter was an 18-year-old freshman at BC, she called me after her first day of classes and said some dumb jock (her words) sat down next to her in a class and started hitting on her. She asked him, "How old are you, 26? And what are you doing here?" The guy proceeded to tell her he made it to AA with the Twins before an injury ended his promising baseball career. It was Shinskie. Thanks to Seth, I was able to give her a few facts about his minor league path, and she had a little fun with him the next day reciting some rather unflattering numbers, which I, as a father, was careful to cherry-pick. Shinskie dated one of her roomies for awhile, and while his QB stint at BC was also short-lived, he did in fact graduate. I think they're still FB friends.

I've always wondered this as well. There are many reports about how great and major league ready most of his pitches are, yet that same stuff doesn't seem to be good enough to overpower minor leaguers. He gets by but it doesn't seem sustainable as he keeps moving up. But then again what do I know (don't answer that).

Stewart's averaging 9.4 BB/9, has thrown nine wild pitches and hit two batters. This is so out of line with the previous 380 innings we saw from him that I'm inclined to simply write it off and assume either he's struggling with some big mechanical adjustment or he's not healthy.

 

I think Jeremy hits the nail on the head, he needs some kind of phantom DL stint to help hit the reset button on this season, take a little time off and come back with a fresh start.

This was my initial thought (or is it blind hope?) as well. Even though he only pitched three innings this outing, he struck out five. That was like a two-game total for him last year.

 

Obviously, the results aren't there aside from the rise in strikeouts, but if he is just working on things, he's got a chance to improve.

Hopefully these kinks will work themselves out and the summer months will be better.

 

all those things are true, though. Being disappointed at what looked like 3 guys who might help this year, being this? That seems reasonable to me....

Yeah, it's early but there hasn't been much good news in the minors so far this season.  I suppose Gordon and Berrios both look good and Burdi and Melotakis have yet to give up a run but that's about the end of the good news.  Fortunately, we have a lot of season left to see some improvements.

Not to mention two major season ending injuries to a first round pick, and a guy everyone had ranked as a really good prospect.
