at this point maybe the real comparison should be hicks versus gabriel moya, who the twins got for jrm. moya, according to baseball reference, is a 22-year-old lefty who has pitched in 43 aa games this year. in 52.2 innings, he's given up 27 hits with 82 strikeouts, 14 walks and a 0.85 era.

Another save last night. He's 5-1 with 23 saves in 23 chances this year. I would say that Hicks for Moya is a great trade.

Lol, I wouldn't. I'd prefer the 5 WAR that Hicks is gonna put up per year the next 5 years.

The whole thread is based on a strawman argument. It makes the assumption that whatever Hicks learned in New York he would have learned here.  Years of non production here is the basis for the idea he wasn't learning here.

He had his moments here, sometimes young players just take a little time to progress and reach their potential. I do think the Twins rushing him originally did him absolutely no favors. I do wonder if that is why Buxton struggled so long as well.

Players having moments is about as weak of an argument as there can be.  The Twins history is littered with players having moments. Pedro Munoz if you need at least one name. Buxton being rushed. His AAA stats say not.  This well could be Hicks outlier season. Time will tell.

Given his ordinary offense since mid May and assume he loses a half a step a year of range and I'm not sure he's a 1.0 WAR most of the next 5 years.  It could be we would have sent Buxton down for a month had Hicks been producing for us and Buxton would of never taken off.  Given his hot stretch was when we were winning anyways he might not have helped us win any extra games.  I'm not impressed by his season in the context of the rest of his career.

Looks like Hicks only played half a season. Grade: D+.

What grade does Trout get for being injured and out 2 months? Or Kershaw? Or Sano? Or Morneau after the MVP half season concussion year? Or anyone that misses parts of the season due to injury, and then perhaps comes back sooner than they should to help a team, and is still compromised by the injury somewhat?

D+, eh?

Bad trade, but Hicks isn't a 5 WAR player, or even a 4 WAR player, and even the ~3 this year will likely be his career peak.

Basically he's a good platoon player against LHP, and defensive role player for all 3 outfield spots. Useful but not a star and really not a regular since he can't hit RHP.

Established players who have proven themselves v. non.  Apples v. oranges. Hicks is 5 years in without proving himself.

FWIW, Hicks has been notably better vs RHP than vs LHP each of the last 2 seasons, which is 43% of his career PA so far. Even including his last Twins season, his wRC+ is virtually equal vs RHP and LHP over the last 3 seasons, and that covers 67% of his career PA to date. It's possible his early Twins career was not a representative sample in terms of his platoon splits.

Hicks basically has been on the dl since June. Not much to update unless he is stalking Hicks going to physical therapy.

I think Jaykay is referring to the stats from back in May, seen under Dave's name, as part of his profile.

I noticed your "Aaron Hicks update" is conveniently not updated at all.

3.3 WAR in 82 games, (6.6 WAR over the course of a full season) .830 OPS 13 HR etc

He should be back for the Yankees playoff run.
