Last Jedi Trailer is up

I think it's important to remember that the Homage King, JJ Abrams, is not directing or writing Episode VIII.

Homage is fine and dandy at times but Abrams took it a step too far with TFA. I think he couldn't get past his own fandom and it hurt the film (which was still quite good but the third act felt tired).

There's no reason to think Rian Johnson is going to take the same approach to The Last Jedi. And the trailer tells us nothing, as the trailers for the middle part of a trilogy are often intentionally misleading. For all we know, Johnson is intentionally leading us down the wrong path (for example, he cut TLJ trailer to match TFA trailer almost scene-for-scene).

It's quite possible we're being trolled. I have no idea what to expect from the film, really.

Gandalf the Many-Colored!

I suspect Stormtroopers are white simply because it films better. It's easy to make a stark profile in white, not so easy in black.

Or because they needed Vader to stand out from his minions both visually and in terms of his villainy. I don't think the opening scenes of A New Hope would have been nearly as impactful if a black clad Vader was visually lost in a crowd of also black clad henchmen.

Homage is fine but when I feel like I'm watching the same movie I've seen before, it becomes a problem for me.

Eyes will roll if there is another Death Star at any point during Ep 8 or 9.

I think they left themselves a lot of directions to go with Ep 8 and 9. They basically used Ep 7 to set the table. Not all that exciting in itself but it needs to be done. Normally in a 2 hour movie this would be the first 20-30 minutes. They basically did this for 2 hours of a 6-7 hour movie with Ep 7.

Of note other trilogies (like LOTR) didn't need to (almost) waste an entire movie on character building and world building (already built...).

I still liked Ep 7 but I felt dissatisfied overall.

See, I don't think they are trilogies. I think they are one story, not 3 stories. Indeed, Tolkien said that about LotR, it was one long book, published as three.

I'd argue these are more part of a LONG story, and we are just seeing chapters. That might not be ideal for closure in any one movie, but I think it is great for what I hope to see for the next decade.

On another topic, last night I asked my wife if it be weird if I went to the new Star Wars World at Disney when it opens, without kids, as a 50 some year old. Her reply "won't that be most of the people?".....

Hah, the other night my wife said "You love Star Wars, we should go there if it opens." I replied "You know, I love Star Wars but I don't need to spend thousands to see a commercialized experience of something I dearly love. I'd rather go to Nova Scotia or somewhere I've never been."

She said "Yeah, your idea sounds better."

And she's right. I'd add the everglades and dry tortugas to any FL trip. since we still haven't made those two parks. And, you are probably correct, it would likely disappoint.

Semantics and I think we are saying the same thing except that other 3 part stories have more stand alone-ness than Ep 7.
