The Arizona Diamondbacks sent a message this morning that the Twins' long-time manager and current Diamondbacks bench coach, Ron Gardenhire, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

"I'm going to fight and deal with it," Gardenhire said. "It's a bump in the road and not how I envisioned starting Spring Training with a brand new team but it's a part of life. With the backing of this ball club, we'll get through it and I'll get through it."

According to the Star Tribune, Gardenhire will return to Minneapolis to have surgery performed by Dr. William Utz.

Gardenhire managed the Twins for 13 season and was hired this past November as a bench coach for Arizona.

Get well soon Gardy! My grandfather battled prostate cancer off and on for 15 years before finally succumbing. I know too well how much of b**** of a disease prostate cancer can be.

I feel pretty confident that Gardy has pretty good health insurance and has had annual check ups because he is on the precipice of 60 and has had a severely stressful job for a long time. That probably means they caught it early. He should come out of it okay. It is not an uncommon cancer. A lot of elderly men die having it, but not from it.

Saying that, I wish him the best and I hope he is back in the dugout as quick as can be!

Prostate cancer is a slow moving, usually treatable cancer. But these days they usually do not remove the prostate altogether so this might not be a good sign.

Best of luck to Gardy and I'm looking forward to the Twins putting him in the team HOF.
