Twins sign Craig Breslow

You want to play, you accept an offer that gets you to training camp and maybe get some innings. You pretty much only make the roster if there is someone on the 6-day disabled list, which may happen with BOTH Perkins and Hughes. If you don't sign, you don't get a chance to show your stuff off. Problem is, the Twins have a lot of guys in the free agent minor leagues marketplace this season, when they should really be challenging many of their minor league prospects WHO MIGHT see action this season with innings.

Of course, the roster is so full of fluff, that it will then be more of a challenge for O'Rourke, Boshers, even Rogers and probably Tonkin to keep a job.

There is veteran depth and there are too many vets taking up minor league roster spaces. The Twins might be pushing on the level of having too many replacement players holding the future in the wings, unless we consider the Lookouts the main place to jump rom the minors to the majors.

Ok, fine.....how about playing a 13 .....pick your analogy, This isn't hitting on a 16, this is hitting on a 19 or 20. He's been bad for three year now, right?

Lots of 2's in the deck

Definitely Definitely.

Very disappointed in this thread! So SAD! It took until post 5 for DanSan to be mentioned and that was it. One lousy mention? Not one call for his release? C'mon people, do I have to do everything by myself? :). On another note, this looks like a low impact, what the H kind of a deal. I do agree with the concern about taking a spot from someone with an upside. It's going to take time to see if the new guys on the block are more apt to move out veteran mediocrity when it's time to bring in someone that has earned the promotion. To me it was one of TR's most irritating traits.

The signings of Gimenez, Belisle and Breslow can bring some needed veteran influence to the bullpen. I don't know if any of them will bring a positive WAR but they might bring something to the clubhouse and the pitching staff. If either Breslow or Gimenez is willing to stick in the minors to start the season they will be a valuable presence in Rochester.

Read Breslow's comments in the links.  There is something more here than Breslow himself.  He has recognized that Falvey and Levine are honest, transparent, positive builders of a team culture that will, in the end, self-perpetuate itself, attracting players who want to be a part of it.

This is the most impressive view of new management that I've seen.  This bodes well.

I like this move a lot.I was originally really hoping for something similar to a guy under 30 on a bounce back, or a failed starter agreeing to convert to the pen to "re-invent" himself as a RP. I like Rogers and think he will get better. I like what Boshers did last season...except for like 2 games when he was hurting and when he first came back...and liked his SO numbers. (I still think people are down on him because of those couple of appearances and lack of a pedigree). And I think O'Rourke can be OK if used properly. And I've been high on Melotakis for some time and think he will be very good.

But there are enough questions here that adding someone to the mix was smart. This is low investment with some potential. It doesn't matter, to me, if he's at all flippable. If he pitches well, he shores up the pen while Melotakis gets ready for his debut and provides experience to some of the young guys. Good move.

I'm pretty indifferent toward this move - so long as it doesn't come at the expense of Rogers.

I'm assuming Perkins won't be ready out of the gate and Melotakis appears to be a mid-season guy. If he's competing for a spot with O'Rourke and Boshers, cool.

But the nightmare scenario is Perkins is "ready" and Breslow does enough to earn Taylor a ticket to Rochester.

Don't disagree, but wouldn't it be great if Perkins is ready AND he got traded for something after proving he's back?

Yeah, Perkins plus Breslow could put the squeeze on someone.  Could be Rogers to AAA because he's a fellow LHP, but they'd need a 40-man spot too so it could be also be Tonkin DFA'd or Haley returned to Boston, neither of which would be ideal moves to make on April 1st (Breslow's presumed opt out date).

I've got similar worries in the rotation, where I am sure Hughes will also aim to be ready and Vogelsong will be trying to make the roster too with a similar opt out date as Breslow.  Could May and Berrios both wind up in AAA to open the season?  May still has an option remaining (he was optioned out of spring training in 2015, but only spent ~14 days on optional assignment that year so he didn't burn his last option year).

I guess in this scenario, the dream would be Perkins is ready, Breslow is outperformed and accepts a AAA assignment (or isn't simply kept around because of "veteran presence") and Rogers keeps his spot. Then Perkins becomes trade bait, is shipped out for anything of value, Breslow is called up and becomes trade bait for anything of value right around the time Melotakis is ready to come up.

I can't believe I didn't think of that sooner :D

I totally keep forgetting about the Vogelsong issue. I'd hope he's considered a long shot that would need to be Spring Training Cy Young to even warrant consideration, but I fear that's not the case.

Can you imagine an Opening Day rotation of Santana, Hughes, Vogelsong, Gibson and Santiago, while Berrios and May hone their craft in upstate New York? *shuddervomit*

I partly liked this because I agree. I love this for your new word!

I'm not understanding the *shuddervomit* response. The reality of the situation is that Vogelsong is probably the #2 or #3 best pitcher on the staff.  *That* should make you *shuddervomit* and not Vogelsong's existence on the roster.

I'm not sure how you can type that second sentence with a straight face.
