March for Science - Minnesota

Craig Arko

Recommended Posts

Below is the link to the website for the Minnesota (local) March for Science to coincide with the national march in D.C. to be held April 22nd - Earth Day.

Details are just coming together. There is an active Facebook page which I'll be happy to invite interested people to. There are doctors, lawyers, biological, social, and physical scientists, engineers, historians and other people who believe critical thinking is one of the best tools we can muster.

Please consider joining in. With rational thinking in some serious peril around this nation, we figure it's time to say 'enough of this stuff.'

Goals: The March for Science is a diverse, nonpartisan group that defends and celebrates publicly funded and publicly accessible science as a foundation of American freedom and prosperity. Science guides nearly every aspect of our lives and it is critical that political leaders and policymakers support scientific research and incorporate science into their decision making.

And for the many of you who don't live in Minnesota, search for 'March for Science (your state)' in your search engine of choice, and you should get the list of resources available there. If you don't enter a state you will get the main page for the Washington, D.C. event.

I have been following this group on facebook and have not been impressed by some of the posts.

Also, they remind me of this, where a group of elite scientists decide they are smarter than everybody else and decide they should be running things.

Mind you, I understand that these days the least fortunate citizens can't seem to vote responsibly and there is an urge by smarter people to try to take charge.  But if we are not inclusive we are on the wrong path.

I guess that's one of the reasons I'm participating. To effect changes in attitudes. I'd encourage others to do the same.

Edit effect/affect; some days I really hate English grammar.

That one always stumbles me up, too. But I'm clear on there, their and they're; also to and too.

Awesome! It is necessary. Although it is far from my area of expertise, it is the closest thing I have to religion.

This is Craig's thread and I don't want to muddy it with my opinions off of the topic, but it might take a paragraph or two or more.

DoomTints made a comment about people in the sub standard educated standing category and how the intellectual left might come off as bullies and arrogant elites and turn against them with a protest vote - at least that is how I read it. I know where DoomTints is coming from and you don't want to isolate them and turn them against you, especially in these times.

I grew up in a low middle class family, in certain situations very poor, depending in who I lived with. It is true that people living in these situations cling to religion and have no interest in gaining critical knowledge. One would hope that every person has an intellectual curiosity that leads them to bigger and better things and doors that are yet to be opened. I don't know how one can grow without that.

I have nothing to fear anymore because everything is on the plate and let it ride. Uneducated and poor people don't get a free pass this time around. From a family source I know that their friends voted Trump because of the fake news.

These people are reliant on their phones and can barely afford them, and believe everything they read.

Talk about technology backfire... and the fake news.

It's a disaster.

No one should have any sympathy for these people.

This is going to be a tough sell no matter what; that's obvious. Some things, particularly in the biological sciences, run so contrary to what many have been raised on the jump is enormous, maybe too much.

I can certainly sympathize to the degree it takes to turn my worldview around and see things their way. Vestigial memories of a (surprisingly progressive) Catholic upbringing at least make it possible.

I don't know how we're going to do it, the crossovers with music, architecture, and the other arts may be the best way to give people a sense of the emotional, as well as the intellectual, pleasures of science. That's how the ancients did it, and maybe they were on to something.

I think science needs a voice again, like with Sagan. I think Tyson is that, but somehow it's not sticking enough.

I'm hoping with Nye returning to tv, that helps. But, science needs to be told more as a story.

I guess all the engineers and scientists could just turn off their machines for a day, and remind people how much science matters....

I'd expect there would be quite a number of deaths resulting from that.

Thanks. Some things transcend even the discipline of baseball (shudder).

If you don't or are unable to march (I'll be using a cane) you can still scratch your science itch by participating in one of the crowdsourcing projects like:

Study the bird population and search for effects of climate change on the species:

http://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/2017/0217/Great-Backyard-Birdcount-begins-Feb.-17-how-citizen-scientists-can-participate?cmpid=FB

Help NASA search for a predicted (by calculation) new planet:

Or a wide variety of other projects:

https://www.zooniverse.org

I've volunteered to search for Near Earth Objects before and now am hunting for comets. Cool stuff if that sort of thing turns your crank.

SCIENCE!!

NASA announced that they have discovered the first known system of 7 Earth-size planets around 1 single star. 3 of them they think is habitable, and all 7 could have water on them. It's only 40 light years away! Here we come!!

Here's some stories on that.

I was off drinking margaritas so missed the live broadcast. Just think, Van, your grandkids may be planning this trip.

That would be mind.boggling, truly. Anything is possible, especially now that Space X has found out a way to land a rocket ship...
