Gophers Basketball

People were considering Florida a legit Final Four contender a couple of weeks ago, then they lost 3 straight, including one at home to Loyola Chicago. Duke just lost to Boston College. It happens. The Gophers will be fine.

Well then they were wrong about Florida too. Legit championship caliber teams don't lose to awful teams.

Sure, the Gophers will probably be "fine", depending on what that means.

They'll make the tournament.

They aren't a championship contender though.

I see Hurt started and McBrayer isn’t playing. It makes a short bench even shorter.

McBrayer still has his nagging injuries.

If he can get healthy for big 10 play, could have some benefits getting the backup guards/wings some extra run. Hurt should be an effective backup in short spurts.

They could really use a big man emerging and Washington taking a step too.

This is a perfect development for this program. Though I will say despite my early optimism, the team isn't nearly as good as I thought they were, even if Lynch comes back on appeal.

I would guess Pitino leaves after the season.

I hope everyone gets the axe.

They had this information for almost 2 full seasons, and he still played.

I understand not suspending and expelling him without due process, but he doesn't have a "right" to play basketball, he could have been benched.

But hey, he won them a lot of games, and that is clearly the most important thing to them.

Depends what the information ultimately is. I don't think the EOAA has much credibility, and there were no criminal charges.

But if they sat on credible info, I agree with you.

So I got confused with Lynch.

There were two incidents in spring of 2016. The second one chronologically was reported, Lynch was arrested and suspended, but was eventually cleared and reinstated.

The other incident, his current suspension, was the first chronological incident, but was just reported in October. There is no criminal investigation (yet).

I'm now a little more suspicious of Lynch, but I'm not especially against Pitino's handling. He initially suspended him, reinstated when cleared, and let him play last year before any knowledge. And he didn't suspend him because there was no criminal case.

I still imagine Pitino leaves, for better or worse.

Sorry, I wasn't aware that it was just reported in October. That certainly changes my opinion of the handling of it, if true.

From the early reporting, I was under the impression that the University knew about both allegations since 2016.

Here's a good summary: http://m.startribune.com/what-we-know-about-reggie-lynch-and-his-sexual-assault-investigations/468169263/

I came across some other information, not as official. Sounds like Lynch might be a predator.

I don't know how much to blame Pitino. Very possible he only knew of the one case, of which Lynch was ultimately cleared both criminally and by the EOAA.

They did know from the beginning, at least according to a witness who brought forth information.

Seems odd the Strib would report it differently.

If they had two credible accusations and sat on one, that would be bad. It wouldn't make much sense either. They could have chucked him relatively painlessly in the spring of 16.

I wouldn't worry about the reporting too much, as this is all developing pretty fast. My original point was that I think the U of M administration -- yet again -- is just kind of winging it, making it up as they go along, and that's not good for anyone. I apologize if I came off as indifferent to what the assault victims have been put through.

Looking at his A&M numbers, he wasn't very good then either. Hopefully he's behind the freshman bigs and Stockman in the rotation next year.

I would be surprised if he's on the roster. He's already been in college 5 years.

I'm thrilled with the Whalen hire.
I've always been a huge fan of hers, and I think she'll do really well at this job.

Someone I got to work alongside a lot during my time working with women's athletics. Great representative for the school as a student, but absolutely wise beyond her years already at that point.

Another season of Gopher basketball - I know, I'm a Twins fan and a Gopher basketball fan...it's kind of sad, really.  :banghead:

But I am looking forward to the season - went to the men's game last week and am planning to go to a women's game in a couple of weeks. I watched both Gabe Kalscheur and Daniel Oturu in high school so am looking forward to seeing how their games will translate into the Big Ten. I didn't get to watch Jarvis Omersa and was surprised how athletic he is, will be interesting to see him develop too especially since he has a great player like Jordan Murphy to learn from this year.

Looking forward to attending the next game - Williams Arena is my favorite place to watch basketball, such an iconic facility.
