On a humorous note....

We got an email from the apartment management, reminding us to keep the heat on, and to let the faucets drip so pipes didn't freeze, because, um, uh, the temps would be in teh 20s. Above zero.

Wut? Is there no insulation in these units? Do pipes magically freeze 30-40 degrees warmer in OR than in MN?

I got the same email when the overnight low was 34 degrees....

And they refuse to use salt to melt the ice. Great for preserving your car, but not so good on the two days a year that it snows.

Good luck making it to the city, Mike! MAX might be running...

We live close to a Max station, but man, that would take A LONG time to get to SE.....I was supposed to have a new AWD SUV this week, but for some reason I don't. We plan to snow shoe and hike in the mountains (and ski), so AWD seems like it might be a good idea.....but again, the bigger issue, imo, is that people have rear wheel drive, older tires, bad cars for winter, and don't know how to drive (and the hills and ice).

That seems like a contradiction...it would be a bigger story if Minneapolis was NORTH of Toronto...which it isn't.  The even bigger story is that Seattle is NORTH of Duluth!  This is the reason the Mariner's catchers are poor pitch framers!

Haha!

That's a good one on me!

I meant to write that Toronto is south of Minneapolis.

Completely mis-wrote that!

As for the other part...

Seattle catchers keep their hands in their pockets?

Isn't that dangerous?

Insulation thicknesses and requirements aren't as high there as they are in MN and the pipes in the ground likely aren't buried as deep.  So yes, they very well could.  :)

Now that I've ruined your humor with seriousness, my in-laws moved to Tampa from Bemidji and they didn't follow the local instructions to let the faucets drip to keep the pipes from freezing early in their first winter there.  The pipes froze and they had to replace a couple of waterlines because of it.

In the 20's is below freezing though, I mean not pipe freezing below freezing but  below freezing nonetheless.

Embrace Metric people, embrace Metric.

But having a single base number for everything is hard.  Our way makes so much more sense...

From what I'm reading and watching.....

There is no equipment to manage the roads, which makes sense if this happens 3 times a year...

People have NO IDEA how to drive in ice/snow

The hills are really steep (you don't know how flat MN is until you leave MN)

The schools were ridiculed after the last storm for closing, so of course they weren't going to close again

Pretty big cluster, really. I'm hoping we can get into the city today, for marriage counseling/brewery visit, and caroling on THE street in Portland for Xmas lights.....but I have my doubts.

Fixed that for you.

When I lived in LA 40 degree nights felt damn cold.
