In some horrible Saturday morning news, we have learned the Twins minor league pitcher Yorman Landa has passed away. He was involved in a traffic incident early this morning outside of Caracas, Venezuela.Yorman Landa signed with the Twins in September of 2010. He slowly worked up the system. In recent years, he fought through some shoulder issues to become a very good bullpen option.

Following the 2015 season, he was added to the 40 man roster. He and his triple-digit fasball spent the season in Ft. Myers where he was an All Star. His season came to an end in July with another shoulder issue.

The Twins took him off of the 40 man roster this fall, but last week, he re-signed with the Twins.

The car accident occurred on the Francisco de Miranda freeway near the Caracas airport. He was taken to the Domingo Luciani Hospital, but doctors were unable to revive him. According to his agent, via Mike Berardino's article, Landa was in the passenger seat of a vehicle, driven by his father. Their car hit a downed tree in the rain. Landa was the only one of four or five passengers to pass away.

Our thoughts go out to the friends and family of Yorman Landa. Over his six seasons in the Twins organization, he developed a lot of friendships. So we also extend our sympathies to all of his teammates who got to know him.

In a statement from Derek Falvey for the Twins, he said "The Minnesota Twins are deeply saddened by the heartbreaking loss of Yorman Landa early this morning in Venezuela. On behalf of the entire baseball community, we send our sincerest condolences to the Landa family as well as Yorman’s many friends, coaches and teammates."

Twins Minor League Director Brad Steil added, "Yorman was a really good guy and was always looking to help out younger players. We will miss him."

His teammates and former teammate have taken to social media to share their thoughts on and share tributes to Yorman Landa:

I didn't get to know Landa as well as I would have liked in his time with the Kernels in 2014 and 2015, but you could tell from his constant smile that he loved playing ball and being with his teammates. The only time I ever recall him not smiling was when he was on the mound, where he had one of the great scowls as he pitched.

RIP Yorman and condolences to all of his family, friends and teammates. So tragic.

Sounds like he was in the passenger seat, 4 or 5 people total in the car, he was the only one who passed away. Single car accident as they hit a downed tree.

I think it's important at times like this to always remember to wear your seat-belt, I'm not going to say Yorman wasn't wearing a seat-belt, but typically when it's a one car accident and one person passes away that is usually the case. Hopefully his team-mates, fans, and friends can learn from this to ensure that no more lives are extinguished to early.

If it turns out he wasn't wearing a seat belt, this story is even more tragic as it would
have been avoidable.

2016 has been a real gut punch.

This has been a tough year. Me an some of my colleagues have deemed 2016 the "Year of Death".

Besides David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and a lot of other celebrities or artists who have died this year, many more have been lost.

One of my best friends died in June after a battle with cancer. He was a 40 years old. I was aware of his dire circumstances at the end, but it kills a part of you, and a piece of my spirit and essence has mutated forever.

I lost my brother in 2003, he made a bad judgement and fell from a cliff. It haunts and destabilizes me to this day.

It is heavy stuff and I wish Yorman's family the best.

Although it sounds like the accident was unavoidable, and Yorman Landa's death was only due to the unlucky placement of a tree branch, isn't it every parent's nightmare to be driving and have an accident that results in the death of one of your children.

My prayers go out for his immediate, as well as Twins', families.
