I really hope impeachment is tabled. There may be merit in it but people don't want it. The Senate won't finish the job. And by the time you wrap it up it's 2020 anyway and that could be a point Trump hammers to victory.

It needs to be squashed. Do the hearings, get Mueller on the record, use it to win in 2020...but do not do impeachment proceedings.

Yep. Get the information out there, make Trump look as bad as the Mueller report says he is.

Then let the voters decide.

One of my neighbors (and the lawyer for our adoptions) is a pretty staunch Republican, but also a pretty adamant anti-Trump Republican, of which he said is a majority of those who attend many national convention planning meetings (something he's been involved with). Could the Republicans seriously offer up someone to challenge Trump as an incumbent, or would something more damning need to come out to move that needle for the Fox News core of the base?

They could, but as you suggest, that candidate would lose.  The base isn't rational, and they are loyal to Trump.   If these Republicans want to get their party back, they need to stomach voting for Democrat and annihilating Trump at the polls, so that his philosophy is totally non-viable.

Well, Bill Weld is running. He could damage Trump in NH early. Think it would be impossible for him to knock Trump off though.

Short answer, no.

Long answer, no.

Much of my family is evangelical Christian. I had little use for most of them before the 2016 election because I thought their platform was trampling personal rights.

Since 2016, I've seen them line up straight behind Trump, often with the excuse "God's will is exercised through flawed people" or some such nonsense related to that. It's literally the laziest excuse a moral person could use to support a bad person and any moral standing the Christian Right had before Trump (honestly, I somewhat sympathize with them over abortion) has gone out the window because they are nothing more than opportunistic hypocrites.

Those people will not waver because they have sold their own morality for... well, I'm not even sure what they sold it for, but they did.

Not even sure which of the three politics thread to put this but it sounds like Mueller is angry at Barr for how he rolled out the special counsel's report.

"The summary letter the Department sent to Congress and released to the public late in the afternoon of March 24 did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance of this office’s work and conclusions,” Mueller wrote. “There is now public confusion about critical aspects of the results of our investigation. This threatens to undermine a central purpose for which the Department appointed the Special Counsel: to assure full public confidence in the outcome of the investigations."

That's going to keep Trump's role in obstructing justice and taking aid from Russia in the spotlight even longer. Today's hearings are going to be a doozy.

There was also a response from Barr that was made public that actually is quite reasonable. I cannot find the actual statement in the tweet storm of hearings today, but this thread does include the key quote of the statement:

That's akin to, yeah I misled the American public, but I'll release the report so they'll find out I misled them. That doesn't explain why he misled the American public.

Mueller should have testified first, so Barr can't dance around 'unsubstantiated reporting' or whatever.

Sounds pretty clear that Barr lied to Congress. I don't understand this tactic by the Trump team. The more they push back, lie, cheat, sue, the bigger guarantee he will be surrounded in this cloud next year.

Mueller is angry? Then come out of hiding and talk.

From literally everything I’ve read about the man, that’s not how he operates. He did his job to the best of his ability and gave the findings to the proper authorities.

He’s not going to just run out and go on the talk show circuit because he’s mad.

We should all respect him for having respect for the system, frankly. I thought his letter to Barr was pretty surprising.

Trump is going to walk away from this, but he would have been much better off had he just ignored the investigation.

I'm interested to see if Congress can get his taxes, and what they find. Do we know if Mueller reviewed his taxes? If there is nothing to see there, why go through hell and high water?

Has there been any movement on this? My understanding is that Congress’ right to demand his tax returns is pretty airtight.

Thanks, Teapot Dome.

I recall hearing that the Whitehouse sued to stop its release, not sure under what grounds or whom they sued or where its at.

The Trump Whitehouse is trying to run out the clock on all front by tying up everything in litigation.

Apparently Mueller is to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on May 15th.

I think that's what the Judiciary Committee wants, but it's not set in stone.

Found this in a reddit thread: "Just to clarify: we are aiming to bring Mueller in on the 15th, but nothing has been agreed to yet. That’s the date the Committee has proposed, and we hope the Special Counsel will agree to it. Sorry for the confusion." Tweeted Rep. David Cicilline

If the only damaging information in his taxes is he is a terrible businessman..... the whole country would go "meh" all at once. Only his staunch ignorant supporters believe that he was/is a great businessman.

I believe he would fight them if he is "loser" just as much as he'd fight them if there is some sketchy business ties.
