Or the stove heats up and another shutdown sounds like a good distraction?

Could be, but if the stove gets much hotter than it already is, a second shutdown will sink below the front page fold.

I don't know.

I don't want a shutdown, but I think Trump could win back the right by fully committing to one.

There won't be another shut down. McConnell had told Trump that he couldn't keep the GOP senators in line much longer. Pelosi kept the Dems in line and they won't break. Senators in purple states and up for election in 2020 were pretty nervous. McConnell can't let them get dragged into another shut down.

Trump will be really mad about the bad press from caving. He will double down and force another shutdown. McConnell will not cross him and negotiate.

I don't think there's another shutdown. Trump will try using the 'National Emergency' card and then the courts will decide. He'll bank on his Gorsuch/Kavanaugh additions paying dividends.

Rubio has called Trump's threat to declare a national emergency a "terrible idea".  That's not "we need more details" or even "it raises concerns", it's "terrible", and it's not coming from a Never Trumper. It is extremely unlikely that he's the only such Republican so vigorously opposed.

You can certainly argue that being opposed and actually doing something to oppose it are two different things. But I think as the SS Trumptanic gets closer to launching its 2020 voyage, many Republicans will likewise get closer to the point where they either reluctantly board or wave from the pier and tend to their own political fortunes.

This doesn't bother me. He can cook his own goose if he wants. It's a waste of money and an eyesore and a temporary bad image for the country. That's all, though. It can be undone if the voters speak their minds.

I'd have been more bothered by a legislative agreement that included it.

And I agree, an executive order will be tied up in the courts for months anyway. There won't be much to tear down in January 2021, when hopefully a new executive order negates the old one.

Dear Mr. A. John,

All of us here at Mr. Schultz's 2020 campaign headquarters sincerely appreciate your confidence in our candidate's electoral prospects and wish to forward our sincerest gratitude. However it should be pointed out that Mr. Schultz has not yet formally issued a statement confirming his reversal of the E.O. in question following his inauguration.

That said, we look forward to earning and receiving your support in 2020!

Regards,

Mr. L. Bombo

Mueller report about to drop? What are the odds it sees the light of day before the election?

Maybe something is about to drop.  Some speculate that Mueller is simply wrapping up the obstruction part of the probe, but the Russian conspiracy investigation still remains.   It doesn't make sense that he's totally wrapping up b/c the Stone case is just starting; I doubt the FBI has even finished reviewing all the data/documents they found from their search warrant on Stone's home.

Mueller may also drop a report prior to finishing the investigation because he has enough evidence the President is indeed a "Russian agent" and should be impeached, so expediency is of the upmost import.

Of course, new AG Barr can screen any report, and he has said that such a report should not be critical of any unindicted person.  Or put otherwise, if the report is critical of Trump he'll redact it.

National emergency to ground 737 max 8 planes. Thank you Trump. Boeing needs to get this fixed before we have an accident here.

I agree this was the right move, even just for perception's sake......I literally have no idea if the planes are unsafe or not, but since most people now think they are, they need to be grounded.

Yep. US carriers were sitting in an uncomfortable safe/not safe middle ground, with at least one of of them honoring flight attendant requests not to fly on them yet refusing refunds or non-Max rebookings to passengers.

Sounds like it's probably not a flaw in the aircraft's structure, which is largely unchanged from other recent versions. That's the most lengthy and costly to fix, so chances are good that they'll be back in the air relatively soon.

Sounds like a software design flaw, which might pertain to any of the Boeing fleet but got turfed up due to a particular failure-prone part on the particular aircraft. Trouble is that, even in an urgent get-it-fixed timeframe, the hoops that must be jumped through to get re-certification for a new software release will take more than just a few days. Rapid bug fixes are often where the next bug is created, so regulations seem to be pretty strict about due-diligence and thorough software QA. I think I saw some guess of late-April.

Fortunately is sounds like there aren't too many of these aircraft in service yet, so airlines aren't going to be grounding a third of their fleet or like that.

Beto entered the race.... Things just got real. He is a guy that can relate to both sides of the party, is a fresh new voice, has experience in Congress.... Guy is a home run. I wouldn't be surprised if Biden doesn't run.

Do we need a separate thread for the campaign?

I don't know a real lot about Beto, but if Biden doesn't run because of him, then my estimation of Beto just went down.

Obviously I'm guessing... But I'm curious on your stance here. I think Beto can appeal to the same people Biden can, but also can appeal to the younger anti establishment movement that Biden will have trouble with.

Beto is the best candidate to enter since Klobuchar.  He's a guy that could actually win.

I agree...I don't agree with the skeptics saying "He couldn't even win Texas." He came pretty damn close and that's no small feat for a Democrat there.

Not sure if any of you saw the Pete Buttigieg town hall last week, but he was very impressive as well.

I really like Beto, but the criticism I'm seeing today is it's not clear where he actually is on a lot of policy issues, and many on the left are suggesting he just might be more of the same ala Kerry/Gore/Clinton.

I'll start a thread.
