Um ... nothing really has been up to now.

Well, he has said a lot of stupid things on Twitter and to the press and not all of them have come to pass.  (Fortunately)

I'm just not clear as to whether he is scheduled to put pen to paper or it's just his new, stupid sound byte.

A lot of the time, I can't tell if what Trump is doing is idiotic or pure genius (but rarely does it fall between those two polar extremes).

But in this case, I simply don't know how this plays in his favor. He's not going to win over anyone in significant numbers, as this statement is SO MUCH WORSE than even anything he's done to this point. It's going to enrage liberals and even the most Trump-closeted conservatives/independents I know are going to reel in horror at the idea of using an EO to try to override the ****ing CONSTITUTION. The only people who will back this with fervor are those who already back the man.

I'm not sure what he's playing at here but to say it a week before an election where he isn't even on a ballot seems like madness to me.

I'm not convinced anyone who supports Trump would reel in horror about anything he says or does Brock.  Trump himself said it - he could shoot someone in the middle of the street and they'd love him.

I just don't see how this goes anywhere.  Even if he signs the executive order I can't imagine the Supreme Court signing off on it.  (Even as out of balance as that group is)

The press still does a pretty good job of just passing on what he says and not do the fact check at the same time.  By the time they call out a lie, the damage is done, and many people only see the straightforward repeat of the Trump lie, and miss the fact check done later.

They still treat him like he is a normal person and somehow who is somewhat tethered to the truth.

Oh, his base will remain steady and behind him. But I think some of those people who voted for him but are ashamed to admit it will take pause.

And literally any chipping away of his 2016 voting base almost ensures a loss in 2020.

But it's still a long road to 2020. Lots can and will happen.

What does everyone envision happening if Trump does lose in 2020?
Do we think that his diehards will peacefully concede defeat?
Or will Trump rile them up with claims that the election was rigged?

I think we all know the answer to that question. All of 2019 and 2020 is going to be about how the democrats are keeping him from doing what is right, and if only they weren't there we could be great, and safe, and have more jobs and the economy would be better. "It was great the first two years, then the dems took over the House, and now look".....

On this, I agree. I strongly suspect he won't leave the office peacefully if he loses, either.

You guys are more optimistic than I am, regarding the likelihood of SCOTUS backing whatever Trump wants.

He has appointed two out of nine justices. What makes you think the rest of that group are more beholden to Trump than the Constitution?

It's a pretty thin argument to make. All it takes is a single conservative justice to swing that vote but I more strongly suspect it'd be a lopsided decision to the tune of 8-1 or 7-2.

Regarding the Supreme Court, Thomas and Alito are pretty extreme right wingers. I do doubt that Roberts would go for this, but I wouldn’t be surprised by a 5-4 decision.

I agree there will be a holdout or two but even the strict Constitutionalists will likely come out against trying to override the document with an executive order.

It's pure insanity that basically negates the rest of the document, including the darling of conservatives, the second amendment.

This is just a ruse, to be sprung on those who want to well-regulate our militia. "Wait, you were super literal where it came to that citizenship amendment. Why is 'shall not be infringed' such a tough concept, Pinko?"

I hope you're right.

But again, I'm not as optimistic.

I think Trump would have 3 in the bag (his selections + Thomas).

I can see Roberts and Alito going either way. More so Alito. Some of Alito's opinions are terrifying, including regarding immigration, and he's actually voted further to the right than any Justice since Rehnquist on criminal justice issues.

And Roberts has been the furthest right on the court regarding civil rights.

SCOTUS is still bound by precedence, and won't want to create a precedence that will work against their political interests in the future.  Imagine if a liberal president could use an EO to overturn Citizens United; they won't want to give the executive that kind of unbridled power.

And if the SCOTUS should start applying different jurisprudence to different presidents depending on the party, we'd have a true constitutional crisis, that would result in a total loss of faith in the courts.  I don't think the conservative justices would risk that.

I too am not as confident as some of you. If you had asked me 10 years ago if the GOP would capitulate to a person like Trump, I'd have said no way. There are too many good people in the GOP for that to happen. I don't know why I'd think this court is any different......they'll do anything to get their way, imo.

Chaos and possible revolution.

No.

Yes.

Bartman, Sammy, Soochie and CT would be totally on board with whatever Trump needed to do, however I think J-Rob, as chief broseph, would really hate being the tie breaking decision on something like this. We shall see!

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

Alito especially, is known for his contradictory opinions, when they seem to suit party lines.

This does not seem like a good use of our military resources, not to mention how much this unnecessary little campaign stunt is going to add to the already ballooning deficit.   Plus I am thinking it is not going to add to our moral standing globally.

Not that Trump cares, because he is positioning the country to be more aligned with the dictatorships or soon-to-be dictatorships in Brazil, Poland, NK, Russia, Saudi Arabia etc. than our traditional democratic allies.

@jimsciutto
New: US Military just announced “There will be additional force over and above" the 5,200 troops being sent to the border, therefore surpassing US force deployment in Iraq to, among other things, fight ISIS.

On an unrelated note, Kanye aka as Ye is breaking from Trump and now feels used.

Up to 15000 now? Is this really necessary? Are they being sent to build houses and facilities? Or help expedite processing asylum seekers?

I don't remember Obama or Bush doing this many rallies. Trump never stopped after the election.... and people continue to go listen. I don't get it... I mean, I get why Trump does it, I don't get why people continue to support the habit.

What’s not to get? This is what fascist dictators do and need.
