Adam Brett Walker Waived, Claimed By Milwaukee

They need to completely rework the way this process works. Teams will claim a player and hold onto him for a bit and then try to sneak him through. They should have to hold a player on the 40 man for 15-20 days so teams can't play the system.

What did this mean?

"You don't get to accept the likely cons of your chosen profession, and then complain when one comes up."

So, Walker can't fight for higher pay for minor leaguers? Earlier FA? What did it mean, exactly? Since, you know, some minor leagures are fighting for those things, like being paid a better wage....or not having to work unpaid overtime.....just the things I literally posted about, actually.

Perhaps it was poorly worded. I didn't mean that they can't or shouldn't work to negotiate better pay and benefits, or whatever else they want to try to get.

I doubt this issue we are discussing would be anywhere near the top of the list of things they'd like to negotiate.

Moving around is a fundamental part of minor league baseball. It's not a rare or unusual circumstance like it would be if you worked at say a bank or something. Every time these guys get promoted or demoted they have to move. This is something so fundamental that it would have to have been a consideration of pursuing this profession.

Had the same front office been in place that paid Logan Shafer, I'm guessing Walker would still be on with the club. These were decisions made by two different men.

I'd also argue that what the Twins did was simply business as they evaluated their roster and decided that Walker wasn't a fit, meanwhile it was Milwaukee that screwed Walker as they almost surely knew he wasn't going to last on their or anyone else's 40 man.

I still believe Walker will make some teams 40 man this 2017 season.  I still say it was the Twins that screwed Walker.  Not giving him a September call up after being the only prospect in the system to make the Organizational All Star Team 4 Consecutive Seasons is a slap in the face.  Especially when you promoted 20+ guys from AAA who either started the season in AAA or you signed to minor league contracts and added to the 40 man roster and then promoted during the season.  I might understand it if you didn't have 100+ loses and the worst record in the MLB?  Yet you reward a James Beresford, Logan Shafer, Darin Mastrionni, etc., etc..

MILB.COM ORGANIZATION ALL-STAR
2013: Minnesota (AL)
2014: Minnesota (AL)
2015: Minnesota (AL)
2016: Minnesota (AL)

Adam Brett Walker II - The only 4 time consecutive participant on the MLB Twins Organizational All Star Team since...................  The Rodney Dangerfield of the MN Twins system.  Time will tell if someone finally gives him respect.  I'm only going on the 4x All Star Representation - Maybe it wasn't derserved - Lol

Seems right, heard that Carter might have been a fit but ABW is much cheaper and has future upside. Camden seems like a good place for him.

if he ever gets to the majors for them, maybe he will hit some HRs during the 50% of time he doesnt strike out.

There's always hope.  Over the past few years, MLB seems to be more lenient on hitters strike outs:

not at the rate he likely would, especially since it would come with an OBP in like the 260s :-)

I would guess it would be more like .280.  But still.....

I'm not quite as willing to write him off yet.  I would love to see him play and see what happens.  Likely he has a short career but I still want to see it.

My guess had to do with a higher % of Ks due to better pitching in the majors and a league average BABIP due to better fielding.  But you could be right.  Not sure we'll ever find out.

Wow!

What does the future hold for Walker?

Probably another waiver move off the 40-man. Someone will NOT claim him. Then he will make non 40-man money for a season and still might earn a call.

If I was his agent, I would be talking bigtime with Japan or Korea and getting him out-of-here and over there. At some point he might just drop out of sight, sadly.

It's all a game of numbers. He was passed by Palka in the Twins system, supposedly. But that still makes you wonder why they 40-manned him. I doubt anyone would've carried him on a major league roster last season. We see there is some interest in him now, but waiver wire claims are basically free until you have to pay out salary.

Yes, guys should be required to stay on a 40-man for a set period of time (three weeks minimum).

I wish we had gotten a quick look at him in a Twins uniform in Target Field. He was, afterall, a Top prospect for years!

In the off season it should be until spring training. If a team decides to drop a claimed player off their 40 in that time, the rights should go back to the original organization if he makes it through waivers.

If this were the case, players that are claimed would go to organizations that truly see a need for their talents.

There should be a similar rule in the summer which often involves an option and the 25 man roster. In the summer it should be 43 days (1/4 year of service time) or return to original organization.

It isn't a choice of Walker or Carter for the O's. Most likely, the Orioles will DFA him at some point and he'll either get claimed again or stay with the O's as depth in Norfolk.

May be he stays on 40 man in Baltimore?

ABW II  won't be able to do "it" at the next level, might actually become a fact someday.  Just hasn't happened yet.  Always produced.  Always.

Has been on a winning team at every level in the Twins system.  Except the actual Twins. #NoCallUp

(1) Will never hit for power against MLB pitching despite hitting for power at every level. (Avg. 27HR/per season)

(2) Guaranteed to have low OBP at MLB despite never being below .305 at any level.

(3) Will never curb SO's despite having a SO rate of 20% under different hitting coach in past.

Maybe Chris Davis can teach ABW how to succeed with his SO approach - Lol

Sure, some players would get claimed by teams that truly want them. Those guys aren't generally the kind that get passed around on waivers though. These are more marginal cases, who nobody has a true need for unless the timing of waiver availability is absolutely perfect.

With your propposed rule, a lot more guys will simply go unclaimed earlier and miss out on salary and benefits.

That's like saying that an aspiring lawyer could have chosen to not take the bar and become a food delivery guy - it's true, but it's not what he or she spent most of their life preparing for so its not much of an option. ABWIII spent his whole life pursuing a baseball career and was forced to become an indentured servant to a Twins team that can basically do whatever it wants with him.

I disagree that baseball is as capitalistic as it could be - it has an antitrust exemption for a reason.

I think the issue is your definition of capitalism. Capitalism is based on competition and the ability for new businesses to form to fill in for market inefficiencies. That isn't baseball. Baseball is a cartel and cartels are not real capitalism. MLB has consistently used the legal system to fend off any competitors and even appointed a judge (Kenesaw Mountain Landis) as its first commissioner to help this effort.

If baseball were as capitalistic as it could be while still being a sport, it would look like soccer in Europe. Anyone can form a soccer team and build it up to compete at the highest levels - that's where most of the biggest clubs began. The odds are stacked against you but there's free flow into the system.

JD Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie say hello and look at what they have done .  Anti trust laws exist to prevent monopolies, which would be allowed under capitalism. Your definition of capitalism is off.  Players are workers, not individual businesses.

TheJcKmp, I see your logic but all the major sports have their Monopolies at the top. To make matters worse, most of them have salary caps and more profit sharing than baseball which I would argue makes them more of a single business vs 30-32 businesses competing in the same league. I like your European Soccer comparison and agree that is a more Capitalistic set up but it is often dominated by the big boys and lacks the competitive balance we like. There are always trade offs.

The problem with baseball and the "indentured servants" is who is allowed into the Players Union. The Major leaguers negotiate the contracts and those contracts include the unrepresented minor leaguers. The minor leaguer can't even join the union representing them. That is not fair. As a union member on our leadership team, I can tell you sometimes the problems can be the way the Union runs things not just the guys in suits.

And Walker's 40 man benefits continue.

Easy there. The other 27 major league teams haven't had their turn with him yet. :)

I don't know what the off-season benefits are to the individual player. I suspect it's zilch.

And, I guess I need to repeat, one marginal player's misfortune is another marginal player's good luck, as regards getting 40-man benefits. It's just not an argument in favor of the present status of the waiver/DFA system, IMO.

Health insurance continues through the offseason. First class airfare for team directed travel. If he got tendered a contract by Baltimore yesterday, I am not sure but perhaps that locks him into a higher base salary for 2017:

Good find. The health/life insurance certainly aren't zilch.

Your summary left out the Marijuana item listed under Benefits. :)

It is a pretty compelling argument from Walker's POV.

I am all for improving the lot of marginal and MILB players, but it shouldn't come at the expense of other marginal players (and add another benefit for the teams) which is what most of these proposed waiver rules changes would accomplish.

I thought about mentioning the wacky weed in jest, but for players on the bubble like Walker they probably can't take the risk anyway. :)

She: I was thinking about baking some brownies tonight, IYKWIMAITYD.

He: Can you hold off a couple of days? The Brewers just DFA'ed me and I don't know yet if someone will claim me or not.
