Luke Hochevar!

Luke Hochevar would be a great target for the Twins to sign. He puts up a good year and you have a nice trade piece that could bring back a nice prospect. This should be something the Twins should be looking at to rebuild the system.

From MLB-TR:  Hochevar underwent surgery to relieve thoracic outlet syndrome in August, and it’s unclear when he’ll be ready to return to game action.

His numbers last year were ok.  Not really against a move like this.  But I do have to question:

1. if a person like Hochevar would provide much value to the Twins or

2. if signing him [gambling on his recovery] and betting on his recovery and

3. wonder if Hochevar could provide enough value to justify using him instead of developing young relievers for the future.

This TOS surgery is somehow the new hot thing in baseball surgeries. Until Hughes went through with it I've never heard of such an operation. Now there are 7-8 different pitchers who have tried this procedure. You would think this is a last resort type of surgery to willingly say, "Go ahead, take out my rib bone. It's not like it was there for a reason...."

It has nothing to do with a rib. That is one possible procedure, but TOS procedures date back a long way, and there are many types. I did an entire article on it for Call To The Pen and talked with a guy at the Mayo Clinic about the surgery. It's the result of baseball's over-indulgence on velocity, though unlike with Tommy John, this can be life threatening, as in the case with J.R. Richard, who was one of the first "major" big leaguers to have the surgery.

My mistake. I assumed since Hughes' surgery required losing a rib bone, that was the standard procedure for TOS surgeries.
