You don't keep a man o a 40-man roster because he is valuable to the minor leagues. You put him on the 40-man because you think he will contribute to the club on the major league level in a year or two (three at the ultimate worse) and that he is valuable to keep as a prospect in your organization, not just as a roster holder in the minors. Not only does that work against the player, but it ties up a valuable spot.

Amen

For the record, Falvey was here in town just a few weeks ago being announced as the new POBO. I wouldn't be surprised if that conversation was had back then when contact was allowed (given he was already in town).  These all fall under "easy decisions." My guess is that the tougher decisions will all be punted until after the WS. Nothing really nefarious here.

According to the Twins official website, five players were outrighted from the Twins 40-man roster.

Andrew Albers

James Beresford

Pat Dean

Tommy Milone

Logan Schafer

All five can become free agents following the World Series.

No real surprises on the list. Milone wasn't going to be tended an arbitration offer.

Dean was the only one that caused some pause for me.

Man!  I am sure glad we gave that nice, long look in September to Logan Schafer, instead of wasting all those ABs on, oh, say.... ABW II.   Pfft-- punk kid was something like Rochester's MVP, so what....  nothing to see here, folks.

Gawd, this team, and the decisions they made this last couple of years.   I am SO not on board with any of the dugout staff coming back next year.

Just to point out... the people in the dugout had little to do with who was called up.

Yup... I was good with Schafer getting called up when he did. There were still 10 games left in Rochester, and I thought Walker and Palka should play every day there. However, when the season ended, there was little reason to not call up at least one of them, and probably Walker. Schafer played more than I thought he would, in large part due to Rosario's injury and Kepler was out a couple of days too. But even so, no reason for him to get those ABs over Walker.

Granite Palka and Walker are the disaster plans. After Kepler, Buxton and Rosario there is Grossman. Unless there is somebody advocating for Santans, there needs to be plan b and c.

Grossman needs to be lumped in with the rest of the DH's if he's going to be on the roster.

I don't think he should even be a consideration in the OF, unless it's some type of 1 game emergency situation.

I agree Grossman is the fourth OF going into 17. However I am also curious in a good way about Granite. He seems to be the first Twin in a long time, maybe since Revere, who has both 1. the great speed to steal bases, and 2. the strong desire to be good at doing so. That's not a knock on Span, Dozier, Buxton et al but just an observation from someone who reads the TD minor league reports and follows the big team a little too closely for his health.

I would think that it is more likely for Granite to develop into a .350-.360 OBP guy than Palka or Walker getting below the 30% K rate. It is also more likely that Granite could be a obp of .370 than those guys getting down to a 27.5 K%. A blogger here will get a POBO job before they could ever be league average K%. I digresed. A mlb OBP slightly above his minor league career would make Granite more than a decent 4th outfielder. Grossman had a 127 WRC+. If that is not a mirage then he is a decent hitter if used properly. Likely better at playing bat than catch. The new guy in charge will figure it out.

Yeah, I don't know why someone like Mejia - unless he was injured - wasn't called up.  I think maybe the interim GM didn't want to add payroll (as small as it would be?) down the stretch?  But a guy like Walker could have gotten a few at-bats up here.

Innings cap

He was.  Just for a day.  The excuse reason I heard for him not staying longer and replace, let's say, Albers, was that he threw a career high 132 innings which was 25% more than last season, so they were taking it easy.

This was widely reported by a number of places -- including me.

There is a need for a fourth outfielder with Grossman being the fifth.

The implication being that the fourth OF needs to play a competent CF, and not hurt us too much at the plate if you stick him in the lineup from time to time.

We have that player. His name is Eddie Rosario.

What we need is for someone else to step up and be a candidate to wield a heavy stick in LF and not be as much of a liability on defense as Grossman. Maybe Palka, maybe ABW, or maybe someone else comes along.

Yeah, I think we need to get a major league capable starting LF and let Rosario be the fourth OF.

Easy to get around that. Kepler can play CF, too.

Perhaps you can explain how striking out at a record pace with a likely .200 ba  benefits a club. You might as well think that Grossman will learn to play defense over the winter

Rosario and Kepler can play center.

Not sure I'd put Kepler in CF except in an emergency.  I think that LF may already be in the system in the form of Palka/Walker.  One, I suspect, will likely carve out a good ML career, and I'm fine letting Rosario man LF for the time being. Then again, hitting isn't our problem right now.

I seem to have been misunderstood on this. Buxton and Kepler are good gambles to be fixtures as two OF starters worthy of a contending team for several years to come. Are either of you saying Rosario is better than a starter for a bad team? IMO looking for a 4th outfielder has it backwards - we need an upgrade in LF. In that scenario Rosario still has a role. Don't get hung up on one candidate or another to be that LF - I was responding to the question of 4th OF. Sorting out LF will be one of Falvey's challenges.

In looking for upgrades it is doubtful it would  come from Palka or Walker as how would a sub .200, 200+K be an improvement

Completely agree with this, actually.

ABW has played a full season with a .278 BA and 20% K rate (115 SO) through 552 ABs / 129 games.  Not like he has never done it before.   Why did it work that season?

Because it was Cedar Rapids 4 seasons ago? I don't expect Walker to ever get back to those numbers but maybe with some more time he can get half way there and that would be more than enough to force his way up I would think/hope.

Amen to this post!  the blatant stupidity of the Twins Front office and coaching staff before Falvey's arrival the last couple of years was just mind numbing.  One would hope that he goes through and purges the existing brain trust to maximum extent possible.

.....This may involve significant doses of ipecac with standing room orders that all front office staff, scouts, coaches and players hit the showers and prepare to hug the closest porcelain bowl.
