I think we had a thread about good TV shows but I can't find it. We have HBO Max and just finished The Outsider and just started Lovecraft Country. Both are really good.

I'd be curious how you feel about Lovecraft after you finish it.  We haven't started it, but I've been wary to because I've heard it fell off the cliff midway through the season.

I did not feel it fell off a cliff, but surprising things happen.  I walked away from Lovecraft thinking I had never seen anything like that before on television.

Lovecraft country was cancelled, after getting nominate for a record amount of Emmy's....one can only surmise why....

Ted Lasso

Still haven't finished Schitt's Creek...but we will

Shmigadoon was hard to watch (only watched one so far, the songs are TOO LONG)

For All Mankind

The Morning Show

Shadow and Bone (we only watched one so far, we'll go back once we start watching more tv again)

I think (hope) this was the thread you meant ... because I merged them :)

I'm 1.5 episodes through Foundation (had to stop suddenly) and I'm super-impressed. The production value is through the stratosphere and while it's not a direct translation of the novel - which is nigh impossible anyway - it feels true to the vibe of the story and I'm really into it.

Apple TV+ is kinda killing it. I rolled my eyes when Apple announced the service but they've quietly become one of the highest-quality streaming services available.

We just watched the first two late last night. It is very pretty. It is well written and acted. I really like it, but I'm guessing it is too much a thinker for the masses. And, neither my wife nor I seem to recall the books much, so we can't comment on the differences, other than obviously women play an actual role.

LOL yeah, Asimov didn't really believe in writing... women...

I also don't remember the book that well - it's been two decades since I read it - but I know the show is wildly different, largely out of necessity. Most of the novel is a couple of people sitting around, often talking about some abstract concepts. Obviously, that doesn't work for the show, which needs strong, defined roles.

Pretty sure you can stream a cast recreation online. I started once, the production quality was not good. Back from decades ago and the BBC

Marvel is killing it on D+ and this looks to be more of the same. I'm here for it.

Also, it looks to be heavily influenced by Matt Fraction's run on Hawkeye from 6-8 years ago, which is the perfect version of Hawkeye, IMO.

That trailer was phenomenal.  "What If..." has been a little disappointing IMO.

We just finished season 1 of Shadow and Bone. I liked it. Not love.....like. The ensemble of characters is quite good and mostly believable, even if the heroine is annoying at times (and, frankly, isn't the most interesting character). Of course, it is season 1, and isn't a finished story at all. And, it is fantasy, so there are predictable moments if you've read much.....

I really like Foundation, but damn, NOTHING HAPPENED in episode three at all. Those that were bored may not ever come back after that one.

And that's why I do not watch modern shows one episode at a time. As shows drifted away from being episodic, the likelihood of a clunker rose dramatically. I watch no fewer than two episodes at a time, three or more if it's a short sitcom like Ted Lasso. I've found it reduces the chance of leaving disappointed.

My wife and I binged through Midnight Mass on Netflix.  You get what you expect from a Mike Flanagan show, but we always seem to enjoy them.

I'm just finishing Haunting on Hill House with my daughter and will go onto Bly Manor next. Is Midnight Mass scary? I thought it looked more like a depressing drama.

I would say all three shows have a roughly similar level of horror to go with all the character drama.

HHH had such promise.....and was just ok at the end, imo. Smart people not being smart is tedious to me. And, while I don't really like horror, it needed more horror.

It was ... scary-ish ... for the first half of the episodes, then not. It just didn't have anything new and became predictable. If I can get through it, it's not really that bad in terms of scare.

Watching Mare of Easttown. Holy **** Kate Winslet is amazing in it.

Been thinking about that one. Looks depressing but amazing cast.

Speaking of HBO, because I now have HBO MAX, I'm watching "Carnival" from the early 2000s. Surprisingly good, so far.

Ugh, Carnivale. I adored that show and HBO pulled the plug on it so quickly. I'm still bummed about it.

Mare of Easttown is definitely depressing.

The Empire storyline is great.

The Foundation storyline is boring. Why even give us Gaal if we never see her? Does anyone care about ANY of the characters from/on Terminus?

The writers are clearly very close with their original work, and are really struggling with the source material.

I did three episodes of Foundation. As noted here, the third was a huge turnoff.

So far the show has given no reason to pay attention to the characters in the future timeline. I assume that's what you're referencing Mike?

I think I'm going to call it a wrap on this show. I thought I was going to really get into this, but it looks destined to alternately frustrate and bore me. If I get back into it, it will be because Jared Harris is great as usual.
