Current TV, regardless the year

Watched the first 2.5 episodes of The Umbrella Academy and wow am I disappointed right now.

Hour long episodes, watched 2.5 of them. That’s a long-ish movie running time. Almost nothing has happened.

Which is too bad because I like the premise, like the cast, and wanted to like the show. But after the fifth time the writers chose to hide the ball (again) instead of revealing *anything*, I simply lost interest.

Interesting, I just added this to my list....

Now I'm disappointed too, and I hadn't even heard of it until your post. So I checked the wiki entry and it says the show features a "nanny robot mother" and that Mary J. Blige plays a character called Cha Cha, so just off of those two tidbits alone I'm already interested.

It's interesting that studios/networks may see series based on comics as a bit lower risk because of their existing fan base, and yet they seem to have a bit of a feast or famine outcome.

I finished it; it was entertaining, but poor plotting, shallow characters, and an obvious surprise lead to think season 2 will be an unmitigated disaster.

Huh. Saw that all coming about 45 minutes into the first episode.

Hiding the ball in an obvious manner is bad... It gets someone thinking about how clueless the characters are and then you start spotting every. single. thing. that. will. happen.

It's the opposite of suspension of disbelief. Instead of being enraptured, you pick apart every single thing that's on screen and then know what happens next.

Has anyone been watching the series on AMC 'A Discovery of Witches'? I've read the trilogy and the series doesn't follow along quite exactly, but seems to work so far. It seems like this 8-show series will cap this year at the end of book 1. They seem to do a pretty fair job of keeping up with the main points of the book if not all the details, and some things are a bit out of order, but I guess that's what happens when you condense a long book. Not sure I'd give it more than a so-so rating, however. I don't know if there are plans to see it to the end of the series. While I liked the first book, I found the 2nd in the series pretty much a snooze most of the way through, so not sure what I'll think if they carry on with the tv series. By the 3rd book, I just wanted to see how it ended.

I watched the first episode.  It was okay.  Semi-serious, but some elements seem a bit juvenile.  I forgot about the show until I saw your post.  Given that it has source material maybe I'll check out the rest of it, but the first episode didn't engage me enough to keep watching.

Yeah ... since I read the books already, not sure if that's what keeps me tuning in or not. Sometimes I enjoy 'comparing notes' even if the television product is just so-so. (And that would be my rating for it, as I said.)

With GoT wrapping up in a couple of weeks I was thinking about this...

Is there a long running show that comes to mind where you enjoyed the ending? I'm preparing to be disappointed because it's difficult to write an ending most people will accept/enjoy.

To this day I still think Dexter is the worst finale ever for a TV show.

Mash?

The Bob Newhart show where he owned an Inn had the best ending ever.

Six Feet Under had a pretty great finale.

Haven't seen that show but I've heard good things.

I didn't mind the ending for Breaking Bad... The Americans wasn't bad either. But they're few and far between.

Breaking Bad was near perfection for me.  The Shield was good.  This may be left field, but Star Trek TNG had a great run.  DS9 as well.

Dexter went off the rails long before the ending, so that made that disaster easier to handle.

TNG did have a good finale, and it occurred to me as well, but they were stand alone episodes largely.  But DS9 was a lot like the dramas today with arcing season-long narratives.

I remember TNG was on 10:30 Sunday evening and would get back from the library ( wonder where my Walkman is)  not done with all of my homework because I procrastinated too much over the weekend and then procrastinate another hour watching the latest episode.   Sunday evenings in college could have a fair amount of self-induced stress.

Watched the first 3-4 episodes of Dead to Me on Netflix.

The end of the first episode left a sour taste in my mouth but it turned out the show really knows what it's doing.

Highly recommend.

Just started watching it on my flight today. Pretty good!

I agree some good acting and writing and Themla Thompkins can still sing (wonder where Tony Orlando is these days - "Dawn" ended up having the longer career).

I am not sure I want to see them go for a second season though.  This might be a show where a limited run is best.

Kelly Bundy has come a long way from eating toaster leavings.

The mother-in-law is one of those actors where you know you have seen her before, but you are not sure where.
