no he didn't. he didn't pitch until 11 days after the trade, and didn't really lengthen out until three weeks after the deal.

Pitched a gem the other night for them.

$20 says he becomes a solid #2 for them for the next 4-5 years.

if by "for them" you mean four innings in a triple-a game. he looked very good, but he was doing that in the twins organization this year too.

here is a bold prediction - Meyer absolutely dominates next season because he is healthy and before the end of 2018 he undergoes substantial shoulder surgery. It will be awful to watch as a Twins fan and the FO criticisms will reach epic proportions but that arm is pitching on borrowed time. I definitely don't wish an injury on him but that is reality.

I think we probably have enough info to say that should happen regardless.

Highly unlikely everyone loses their job on the minor league field staff level . The minor league pitching coordinator and the minor league coordinator are more likely, but not a certainty.  Allen and Guardado go only if Molitor does not like them, they quit, or Molitor quits.

Good luck to him.  Sure, I guess I wonder what "really" happened, in a gossipy sort of way.  My impression of him, perhaps wrong, was that he was a real good kid.  Things went sour for him here.  He's not the only one.

Man, pitching prospects.  In an apples to cucumbers comparison, Zack Wheeler is on the shelf for the rest of the year.  I bolded, italicized, and underlined cucumbers there just to emphasize I realize how different the two situations really are.  They are both fruits, however.

I'm glad for Meyer but Anthony should have walked from that trade when they wanted Meyer. I knew this was going to happen and it ticks me off. What a incompetent FO bunch and you can include Molitor. Worse team in baseball, worse starting pitching and they trade away a prospect with big upside. What a bunch of idiots.

It's absurd how poorly the Twins handled him.

For his sake, I hope he performs well, he deserves a legit shot. Something the Twins in the midst of their 500 losses over 5 seasons couldn't find somehow....

A 4 inning start in the minors is a gem? Before that he was terrible in SLC. On a totally unrelated note, Distortion Of Reality is a great band, you should check them out.

Also, Ricky Nolasco threw an ACTUAL gem for the Angels, complete game 4 hitter. Want him back?

The damage was already done by the time Anthony made the trade.  Molitor just wasn't going to use him.  He didn't play him much in 15 and ignored him in 16 - he age 25 and 26 seasons.  I remember when Gardy was begging for him to start 14 in the bullpen (ala Santana) but was rebuffed - that was the closest Gardy ever got to calling out the chicken **** rosters he was given.

I think how Molitor has treated some of the young guys - yanking them in and out, calling them out in the media, not letting them play and/or playing them in the wrong role - is exhibit A on why he shouldn't be managing this team anymore.  But as for Meyer, I hope he does well for the Angels.

No.  He threw 5 innings in 3 games for their Rookie team and then made a start with their high A team before starting for their AAA team.  They are cautious with him...

He did not pitch for SLC before.  He had a bad start for their high A team in San Bernandino where he allowed 3 runs in 2 innings.

If that is terrible, please let me know how you feel about Berrios's starts with the Minnesota Twins?

just sayin'

Good catch on the SLC thing. 3 runs in 2 innings is terrible. Berries so far in MN has had terrible results.

Including meyer in the trade wasn't a mistake--the Twins weren't getting (and weren't going to) anything out of Meyer. If the trade required Meyer to close--so be it! If the Angels can turn Meyer into a functional pitcher--good for them--because the Twins had failed and would continue to fail with Meyer. LAA's if successful with Meyer only serves to illuminate the Twins deficiency in pitcher development and the glaring need for major surgery in the franchise.

Meyer will be an interesting decision for the Angels next season. Does anyone know, is he out of options? Does he need to be carried on the roster? If so, sans winter ball, what is the max innings you could expect out of him next season - 100? 125? I doubt 150 at this point. Which means he needs a mix of long relief or short relief, or to be that 13th guy in the bullpen as he weans into becoming a starter.

Now he may have one more option year left, which would be good. But as in the Twins case, you basically have to 40-man him again for a season in the minors, and you suddenly have people who are passing him by in the pecking order and could possibly be in the Twins rotation come 2018 equally as well as Alex Meyer.

The trade was a wash of sorts. You hopefully got a better pitcher than Nolasco in Santiago, and even if you don't offer him arbitration, you save $8 million then in salary, although not sure what the Twins will spend it on except to make up for lost revenue in this last month of the season, perhaps.

But, yeah, at this point didn't see Meyer fitting into the 2017 roster. And looking ahead to 2018, unless he blew people away in the minors in 2017, he wouldn't be there then, either.

I suppose since Arcia has been waived a few times; we need another a horse in rooting against the Twins recent transactions race.

I'm glad Meyer is getting another chance, but he's a September call up, who was already on the 40-man, entering his final option year.  It's probably more of due diligence in assessing Meyer, than Meyer earning a promotion with one four inning success story at AAA.

Why would he need to spend next year in the minors?

He'll slot into the Angels rotation to open next season.

He has one more option year remaining.

crystal ball?

The Twins have failed developing starting pitching even before Steil became farm director.  Liriano was the last decent starting pitcher the Twins have developed.

A deep celanup in the organization top to bottom, and staffing positions like the Minor League Pitching Coordinator and the Farm Director with people with a proven record of player development would have done wonders for Meyer and the rest of the organization.

Garza, whom they picked in 2005 is their more recent first round SP pick who has made a significant impact in the majors.  Here is the "honor roll":

2008: Gutierrez, Hunt
2009: Gibson
2010: Wimmers
2011: Boyd
2012: Berrios
2013: Stewart

This one is on the Twins, and not on Meyer...

Nope.  Because Meyer was the only pitcher in the Twins' organization with Ace potential, and they do not grow on trees...  If a healthy Meyer was given the chances that, let's say, Tommy Milone or even Glen Perkins, Scott Diamond and Andrew Albers (yes I am picking on horrible lefty SPs today) have been given and then has proven not to work, it would had been a different story.

They never gave him a chance, plus they messed him up in 2015 (like they messed May up in 2016) by moving him to the pen

I'm not sure that's the list to condemn the Twins.  You have three guys - Gutierrez, Hunt and Boyd - who flat out didn't make it (injuries affected Gutierrez).  Gibson has made a bunch of starts at the ML level although he hasn't been as good as hoped.  Berrios is a stud.  Wimmers moved to the bullpen and it's still too early to make a ruling on Stewart (or Jay).  Frankly, that seems about right considering the actual draft range these guys were taken in.

I mentioned this on TT but it's somewhat surprising how little pitching the Twins took in 06 and 07 and I'm not sure if Johnson's reliever strategy is helping.  My personal opinion is that Steil has done a very good job as farm director since he took over (2012) and that the drafts after Ryan gave Radcliff an advisory role have been better.  If the new GM makes changes, fine, he knows more than me but I think Steil has done enough to keep his job and Johnson has improved enough to stay as well.

And therein lies the Twins philosophy. They just CANNOT condone watching the occasional implosion. But they are perfectly happy to watch themselves get nibbled to death over 5-6 innings, and then bring in the pen. Those kind of pitchers always "look" like MLB pitchers. What I don't understand is why they traded for Meyer. He never fit their profile. It's like a rich 85 yr old buying a Maserati because his friends have them. Everyone's got one, and he thinks they're cool. But he still drives the tan Buick. :)

Based on this, I suspect that you think that Meyer is a stud also, because he was better than Berrios in Rochester this season, when healthy, and about as bad in the majors, albeit with about a tenth of the chances that Berrios had.

No, you are talking about a 26 yr old versus a 22 year old.

And posters over at "Angels Daily" are up in arms about it as the new guy gets a look over their version of Wheeler.
