Article: Wimmers' Long Road Finally Leads To Big Leagues

Recommended Posts

Congrats to Wimmers!

I've been calling for this move since Wimmers would have been eligible for minor league free agency after the season anyway, so it's basically a no-cost audition (presuming that he's not blocking anyone else, and I don't believe he is).

That said, it's unlikely that he will be able to show enough in the next month to avoid being dropped from the 40-man after the season regardless.  I usually oppose wasting too many innings on such players, but it will be good to get a major league look at Wimmers, and it might help convince him to re-sign with the organization.  If he can parlay the audition into a major league deal somewhere else like Yohan Pino a couple years ago, more power to him.

First, I'm really happy for Wimmers. His road here has been brutal.

But ... are we really recalling a relief pitcher with control problems after sending down two guys who have control problems? It's not like Wimmers control has improved lately - he's walked five guys in his last four (all one-inning) appearances.

I'm baffled as to what this organization is doing right now. I'm really not sure this move has Wimmers best interests in mind.

Well, Wimmers needs to be on the 40 man or will be a minor league FA this offseason. I think they want the major league coaches to get a look at him, or maybe they want to reward him for his years of struggle by getting him some MLB money and pension and healthcare (or whatever they get).

I'm not sure leaving him down or calling him up affects his development at this point.

It totally has his best interests in mind. He's 27 and gets to pitch in the big leagues for a month. Pitching at the big league level gives the new front office more data points to determine whether to keep him on the 40-man or let him become a minor league free agent.

And, who comes up is probably less important than Berrios and Duffey not making big league starts right now.

Can't we even congratulate a player without ripping 2 or 3 others down?  This site has become so pessimistic it's depressing.  I wish Alex the best and i hope he succeeds.  There are so many people so negative, that you are already blaming the pitching coach, the system and the front office for players for him no succeeding.  I can't even com to this site without hearing excuses.

Berrios walks two batters and gives up a gift 3-run HR today...........let's blame everyone in the system. Jose knows how to pitch.  You don't blow by AA and AAA without knowing how.  You don't throw 55 of 91 pitches for strikes without knowing how to pitch.  Give the guy some time.  We don't have to blame someone for everything bad thing that happens.  ****.  A pitcher has a bad start............we blame the front office, the manager, the pitching coach and then the catcher.  They are human beings.  The Twins organization is not the only one that young players struggle.  Look it up. There are more players in the league than Michael Trout.

I know all of you know what it's like to be a young twenty-something in a major league organization............but good christ.  I love this site, but it's getting to the point where I can't even come here anymore and that's sad.  Ugh. good night.

Bingo!

True, there isn't much patience at the moment.  But who is to blame for that?  I would expect fans to be critical in such a terrible season, even moreso after a string of bad seasons going back six years.  And it's the same problems, over and over.  It may seem like a broken record, and that's because it is.  Getting angry at fans expressing frustration isn't going to solve the problem.

You can't enjoy an internet message board without learning to look past some of the posts/posters (present company perhaps included :) ).

Every message board should come with an "ignore user" function, and when activated posts by that person would not be visible.  The filter should also make it so that person can't see your posts either.

This would solve a lot of problems before they start.

I have 20 members on my ignore list and it doesn't help.

Don't know if you're aware, but TD has that feature:

But I'll try not to give you any more reason to use it! :)

Right now, I have one poster that I use this function for.  I don't use it for people I often disagree with because I like hearing opposing views.  Only the truly ridiculous get put on the list and overall, this site's regular posters are very good, so that list is but one poster.

Having said that, I'm sure I'm on many people's ignore list :-)

We met Alex when he was on the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod League. He and Stefan Romero (Mariners) carried the team to its first ever league championship. We rarely met a young player who worked so hard, came to do his best, and left it all on the field. I know he'd be embarrassed if we went into details, so none forthcoming today. We followed him with anticipation as he went to the GCL and beyond. But when we saw he was injured we knew that if anybody could work hard enough to come back, it was him. Congratulations, kid (well, kid no more, now a dad), you've earned it. See ya when you come through Fenway!
