True story. In Catholic Hi School, Sister Xaverious (sp) was ancient and hard of hearing. She taught last hour math until the final bell at 3:10. By prior agreement at 2:30 everyone got up grabbed their books and started to walk out. One of her stress responses was "here here, stop it you children". Then she asked where we were going, and we asked, "sister didn't you here the announcement? School is dismissed early today." And we all walked out. There was hell to pay later of course, but well worth it!

One of the best loopholes I found during senior year of HS was "work release program". I had study hour for first period, and frankly did not want to go. If you took a sheet home and claimed you were staying home to help out with chores and got a parent's signature, you could stay home instead of going to study hall. Because of that I was able to sleep in until 8:15 to make it to 9:00 class!

We did not have work release, dad just kept us home if he needed us in the field, and sent a note the next day. One spring day I spent 12 hours on a JD two cylinder pulling a disk, and the next day the ag teacher questioned, in front of the whole class, the lack of sunburn on a boy who had spent all that time outside.

We could take college courses at the local community college.  I don't believe that we had work release.  Me being somewhat idiotic, took 3/4 of a school day worth of shop classes my entire senior year.  I regretted that decision when I was in college, but when I started to use the things I learned in the shop classes instead of English 101 stuff, I realized the wisdom in what I did.

A group of friends and I invented the Independent Study program at our high school. I don't think they offer that anymore.

My plane has an engine leak....hope the mechanics did well in training....

That would not be the time for trial and error.

I was at an airport a few years ago and the plane at the gate next to us was delayed due to mechanical issues.  I was watching a couple of guys working in the wheel well, handing tools back and forth and such.  The guy working inside of the wheel well climbed out and looked at the other guy and shrugged his shoulders.  I was suddenly very glad that I wasn't flying on that plane.

Dinger, back me up on this. There was nothing better than walking into a classroom in the 90's/early 2000's and seeing this in front of the classroom...

In some ways the film reels and film strips were better, because the teacher often would have trouble getting things lined up or they would have to fix something midway through, so it extended the movie time.  Plus you got the added bonus of the sound not always matching the picture.

Ah yes, the filmstrip days!  We may have to explain that one to Vanimal.

Yeah, but those same guys likely did the mechanical safety check on yours.

Believe it or not I caught the bitter end days of film reels! That and overhead projectors.

I went to a very small Catholic grade school. 7 boys and 7 girls in the class. Our room had a piano set diagonally away from a corner of the room, allowing for some small shelves for book storage. One day our nun/teacher found about 4 of us boys and the most adventurous female member of our class huddled behind the piano perusing a National Geographic. :). Need I say we were not reading up on the migration habits of the Icelandic musk oxen! :). The boys were soundly admonished for our perversions, and Barb was told in no uncertain terms that she was to spend her time in the future with her gender, and not be playing with boys, as no good could come of such behavior!

You were studying the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow, weren't you?

Speaking of pilots, how confident are you going to be to fly once people my age start becoming the pilot of your airplanes?

Well, planes pretty much fly themselves these days, so by then I imagine all you'll be doing is serving me drinks.

I'll have a double, thx.
