Article: Game Thread: Twins @ Royals, 8/18 @ 7:15pm CT

The Twins packed up, left Atlanta and made the trek to Kansas City to face the suddenly hopeful Royals for a 4 game series.

Suddenly hopeful because Danny Duffy and Wade Davis say they can do it. They believe that they can make the playoffs. Why not… the Twins came back from sub .500 in 2009. The Twins are their inspiration.

The Royals are currently 7 games back from the last wild card spot… certainly surmountable… but they would also have to pass by the Yankees, Astros, Tigers and Mariners and either the Red Sox or Orioles or Blue Jays just to get there and that makes it less surmountable.

Lloyd Christmas says: “So you’re telling me there’s a chance”.

Here are some things to think about:

 

1. Unless you want to work forty hours a week – Giving 100% at work is extremely easy to do. It equates to about 20% each day based on a 5 day work week. There is really no excuse… so give it a try.

2. Fell off the jetway again – When it comes to boarding a plane… the airline industry understood that herding people onto a plane was more efficient if they approached it like ranchers herd cows. The cows go through a cattle alley and people go through a jetway. It’s only a matter of time before the airline employs dogs to help with the herding process. Without the jetway… you’d have some people scattered all over the tarmac and some people trying to leap into those 8 foot high doors.

3. I knew it started with an S – I don’t spend a lot of time on Facebook. When I have recently… I’ve been noticing that it’s mostly videos now. It seems like Facebook is losing that personal touch. Facebook needs those personal posts. A friend of ours posted yesterday that it was their 20th anniversary. If it wasn’t for that post… I would have had no idea it was their anniversary. I also wouldn’t have known that he was… quote, “married to the sweatiest girl in the entire world.” end quote

4. Your Hands are freezing – Growing up in Minnesota… We all know what the cold hand treatment is. Come inside after being out in 10 below weather with frozen hands and what do you do? You apply those hands to the warm skin of someone else. Sometimes if you sneak up on them… you can make them jump quite a distance. Hindsight is 20/20… I know now that it was a bad idea to sneak up behind grandma and do this in front of the stairwell.

5. Big Gulps Huh… Alright see ya later – Small talk is very difficult to master. I think the key is to come up with a good conversation starter, so I thought I’d share some of my favorites: “Are those your real teeth?” “Would you like to hear a list of things that I’ve done when I’m drunk?” “Do you know any good conversation starters?” “I’m new in town can you tell me how to get to your place?” “Does this smell like chloroform to you?” “You look like someone I met in prison...” and finally “You know… I knew something was wrong and it took me around 8 hours to figure out what it was… I was wearing this thong backwards.”

Facebook, and social media in general, is becoming less important to me on a daily basis. The benefit of FB these days is when it tells you when someone's birthday is... Or when someone gets engaged and you know the dream is over.

As a social media hold out, I've survived just fine.  I don't feel like I'm missing a thing and comments like these simply reinforce that.  This is as close as I come to social media, and I'm okay with that.

I signed up for Facebook a few years ago.  Got contacted by a bunch of relatives that I never wanted to hear from again.  You know the type:  where's thong on head,  backwards.

I change my FB profile picture once a year, when it's the annual Christmas family photo. And let others tag me on pictures, events we went to, etc. It's been a good year and a half since I posted something on my own to that site. 

Haven't posted a thing on Twitter all year. The only time I do use it is following LaVelle and Berardino. And fantasy football stuff.

Facebook can be useful for connecting with someone you've lost contact with, but beyond that, not so much.  And goodness, the makers of FB have an odd definition of what is considered to be important.

That wouldn't work for me.  My wife is a hold out as well.  We somehow found each other in the days of MySpace without actually having a MySpace account.

 

We keep in touch with the people that we want to keep in touch with by actually talking to them on the phone (gasp!), emailing, or even meeting up somewhere.  Even for 35 year olds like ourselves, it's amazing how foreign a concept those things are among our peers.  Generally, we have no ill will towards social media, we just aren't interested in it.

There are actually some valuable non-paywall non-idiot sources on Twitter. The Paris Review, for one, will regularly post interesting pieces from their archives. I like the idea of constraint in Twitter, but sadly you are right that most take shortcuts that make a mess of things.

 

I'm ambivalent about Facebook; I hate the phone. Maybe it's time I push for a renaissance of longhand but that's quaint and quixotic

This suddenly occurred to me! The image of Brian just wearing a thong, either forwards or backwards, makes the amount of time involved, irrelevant! That said, his announcing that while at the end of the queue boarding the plane, would likely cause enhanced loading at the very least. Either that or mass hysteria!

RB, the opening comments made me think of that old SNL bit - Deep Thoughts with Jack Handey....which made me want to look up some of them:

As a sports fan I think Twitter is extremely useful.  Up to the minute updates during games, deadlines, etc.  You choose who you follow, you can customize lists (IE:  Twins writers, NBA players, etc.)  Any way of quickly sharing information isn't a complete waste IMO.

That may be great for some, but that would just drive me nuts.  If I'm in a position where up to the minute updates wouldn't be bothersome altogether, I'm either already watching the game or following along close enough that up to the minute updates are useless.  All other times, I don't want to be constantly bothered by notifications or updates.  I don't need to have up to the minute information at all times.  I don't want up to the minute information at all times.  As much as I love sports, I simply have other things that take priority during most of my day.  I'll get the information I want when I have time to get it.

Exactly.  The people who complain about people on facebook that share every detail of their life........they are YOUR friend.  It's easy to delete or simply block their posts.  

 

There is a TON of utterly useless crap on Twitter.  Any jimbroni can get on there and post whatever they want.  You choose what you want to see and utilizing this can make it a very useful tool.

I get zero notifications from Twitter.  When I want updates on why a player left the game in the 3rd inning, updates on if my questionable fantasy quarterback is going to start on Sunday morning or just want a 15 minutes break and browse my baseball writers for interesting articles.  I guess the option for me of getting up to the minute updates whenever I want is just extremely handy.  If it's not your thing, it's not your thing, but I just can't see how services like that are seen in negative light.

Like I mentioned in another post, I generally don't see them in a negative light.  They're just not something that interests me.  I'd find them more of an annoyance than useful if I did use them, which is why I don't.  I get annoyed enough when coworkers are getting notifications and whatnot during the workday.  Time and place.  Other than that, if you enjoy that stuff, knock yourself out.  You'll get no complaints from me.
